YouTube demonetizes Rudy Giuliani

YouTube kicked Rudy Guiliani out of its partner program for at least 30 days, reports MSNBC. Trump’s personal lawyer will no longer get paid by the company to post conspiracy theories and beg there.

On Monday, Giuliani was sued for defamation by Dominion Voting Systems, a maker of election equipment that is the target of many conspiracy theories pushed by Trump and his allies.

A quarter of US adults now get news from YouTube, Pew Research study finds

Around a quarter of U.S. adults, or roughly 26%, say they get news by watching YouTube videos, according to a new study from Pew Research Center, which examined the Google-owned video platform’s growing influence over news distribution in the U.S., as well as its consumption. The study, not surprisingly, found that established news organizations no longer have full control over the news Americans watch, as only one-in-five YouTube consumers (23%) said they “often” get their news from channels affiliated with established news organizations. The exact same percentage said they “often” get their news from independent channels instead.

Independent channels in this study were defined as those that do not have a clear external affiliation. A news organization channel, meanwhile, would be a channel associated with an external news organization — like CNN or Fox News, for instance.

These two different types of news channels are common, Pew found, as 49% of popular news channels are affiliated with a news organization, while 42% are not.

A small percentage (9%) were those from “other” organizations publishing news, including government agencies, research organizations and advocacy organizations.

To determine its findings, Pew Research ran a representative panel survey of 12,638 U.S. adults from January 6-January 20, 2020.

This study found that a majority, or 72%, of Americans said YouTube was either an important (59%) or the most important (13%) way they get their news. Most also said they didn’t see any big issues with getting their news from the site, but they did express some moderate concern about misinformation, political bias, YouTube’s demonetization practices and censorship.

Republicans and independents who lean Republican were more likely to say censorship, demonetization and political bias were YouTube’s biggest problems, while Democrats and independents who lean Democrat were more likely to say the biggest problems were misinformation and harassment.

A second part of the research involved content analysis of the 377 most popular YouTube news channels in November 2019 and the content of YouTube videos published by the 100 channels with the highest median of views in December 2019. This was performed by a combination of humans and computational methods, says Pew.

The analysis discovered that more than four-in-ten (44%) popular YouTube channels can be characterized as “personality-driven,” meaning the channel is oriented around an individual. This could be a journalist employed by an established news organization or it could be an independent host.

However, it’s more often true of the latter, as 70% of independent channels are centered around an individual, often a “YouTuber” who has gained a following. Indeed, 57% of independent channels are YouTuber-driven versus the 13% centered around people who were public figures before gaining attention on YouTube.

The study also looked into other aspects of the YouTube news environment and the topics being presented.

According to YouTube news consumers themselves, a clear majority (66%) said watching YouTube news videos helped them to better understand current events; 73% said they believe the videos to be largely accurate, and they tend to watch them closely (68% do) instead of playing them in the background.

Around half (48%) said they’re looking for “straight reporting” on YouTube — meaning, information and facts only. Meanwhile, 51% said they are primarily looking for opinions and commentary.

In response to an open-ended question about why YouTube was a unique place to get the news, the most common responses involved those related to the content of the videos — for instance, that they included news outside the mainstream or that they featured many different opinions and views.

Pew also examined how often news channels mentioned conspiracy theories, like those related to QAnon, Jeffrey Epstein and the anti-vax movement.

An analysis of nearly 3,000 videos by the 100 most viewed YouTube channels in December 2019 found that 21% of videos by independent channels mentioned a conspiracy theory, compared with just 2% of those from established news organizations. QAnon was the most commonly referenced conspiracy theory, as 14% of videos from independent channels had discussed it, compared with 2% of established news organizations.

Independent channels were also about twice as likely as established news organizations to present the news with a negative tone.

Overall, the videos from the top 100 most viewed YouTube news channels assessed in December 2019, were neither too negative or positive (69%). But broken down by type, 37% of videos on the independent channels were negative, compared with 17% for established news organizations. Negative videos were more popular, too. Across all channels, negative videos averaged 184,000 views compared with 172,000 for neutral or mixed tone videos and 117,000 views for positive videos.

Meanwhile, videos about the Trump administration made up the largest share of views in December 2019, as roughly a third (36%) were about the impeachment and 31% were about other domestic issues, like gun control, abortion or immigration. Another 9% were about international affairs. Videos about the Trump administration saw around 250,000 average views compared with videos on other topics, which averaged 122,000 views. Trump was the most common video focus in about a quarter of the videos studied, or 24%.

Videos about the 2020 elections, which at the time were centered around the Democratic primary, were the topic of just 12% of news videos, by comparison.

The study also examined how YouTube news channels presented themselves. It found that the vast majority don’t clearly state a political ideology even when the content of their videos makes it clear they have an ideological slant.

Only around 12% of YouTube news channels presented their political ideology in their description. Of those, 8% were right-leaning and 4% were left-leaning. Independent news channels were more likely to present themselves using partisan terms and more likely to say they leaned right.

The demographics of the typical YouTube news consumer was a part of the study, too. Pew Research found the news video viewers were more likely to be young and male, and less likely to be White, compared with U.S. adults overall. About a third (34%) are under the age of 30, compared with 21% of all U.S. adults; 71% are under 50, compared with 55% of U.S. adults overall.

And 58% of YouTube news consumers are more likely to be male, compared with 48% of U.S. adults overall. Half (50%) are White, 14% are Black and 25% are Hispanic. In the U.S., 63% of adults are White, 12% are Black and 16% are Hispanic.

The full study is available via the Pew Research Center website.

YouTube bans David Duke, Richard Spencer and other white nationalist accounts

GettyImages-1149449083.jpg?w=600

YouTube just took action against a collection of controversial figures synonymous with race-based hate, kicking six major channels off its platform for violating its rules.

The company deleted six channels on Monday: Richard Spencer‘s own channel and the affiliated channel for the National Policy Institute/Radix Journal, far right racist pseudo-science purveyor Stefan Molyneux, white supremacist outlet American Renaissance and affiliated channel AmRenPodcasts and white supremacist and former Ku Klux Klan leader David Duke.

“We have strict policies prohibiting hate speech on YouTube, and terminate any channel that repeatedly or egregiously violates those policies. After updating our guidelines to better address supremacist content, we saw a 5x spike in video removals and have terminated over 25,000 channels for violating our hate speech policies,” a YouTube spokesperson said in a statement provided to TechCrunch.

The company says that the channels it removed were repeat or “egregious” violators of the platform’s rules against leveraging YouTube videos to link to off-platform hate content and rules prohibiting users from making claims of inferiority about a protected group.

YouTube’s latest house-cleaning of far-right and white nationalist figures follows the suspension of Proud Boys founder Gavin McInnes earlier this month. Some of the newly-booted YouTube account owners turned to still-active Twitter accounts to complain about losing their YouTube channels Monday afternoon.

The same day that YouTube enforced its rules against a high-profile set of far-right accounts, both Twitch and Reddit took their own actions against content that violated their respective rules around hate. The Amazon-owned gaming streaming service suspended President Trump’s account Monday, citing comments made in two Trump rallies that aired there, one years-old and one from the campaign’s recent Tulsa rally. And after years of criticism for its failure to stem harassment and racism on, Reddit announced that it would purge 2,000 subreddits, including r/The_Donald, the infamously hate-filled forum founded as Trump announced his candidacy.

5 Relaxing YouTube Channels for Furniture Restoration and Makeovers

A person applying varnish to a wooden table.E_serebryakova/Shutterstock

Need to chill out for a moment? Sometimes, it’s nice to sit back, tune out, and watch people restore or reimagine old furniture. It sounds weird, but it isn’t too different than watching Bob Ross. You get to see an ugly chair or table return to glory, all while watching passionate restorers explain their process along the way.

But you aren’t here to read a bunch of words, you’re here to check out some furniture restoration videos. These videos aren’t guides, but they might inspire you to strip down your old coffee table and start anew. After all, basic furniture restoration is a lot more accessible than woodworking. (Woodworking videos are pretty relaxing, too.) So, without further ado, here are five YouTube channels to help you chill out and learn some restoration secrets.

Dashner Design & Restoration: Renewing Mid-Century Furniture

Most furniture restoration videos are accompanied by music, and regularly feature the face of their host. But Dashner Design & Restoration videos are all about the art, the restoration process, and the sounds of a cozy work environment.

I love the pacing of Dashner Design’s videos and the sounds of birds and rain that you often hear in the background. It’s easy to center your attention on these videos and fall into a trance, but I’ve found that they also make for great background noise while working.

Our Favorites:

Ashleigh Lauren Furniture Repurposing DIYs: Turning Trash to Treasure

Out with the old, in with the new. Ashleigh Lauren takes old or neglected furniture and gives it life, often with a new paint job or a totally new purpose. Her videos are quick, but they go step-by-step and include instructions that can help you reinvigorate Goodwill furniture or the old chairs and tables that are floating around your house.

The thing that I like about Ashleigh Lauren’s furniture makeovers is that they’re affordable and easy to copy. She also makes videos on Rental-Friendly DIYs and Budget-Friendly DIYs, which is just icing on the cake.

Our Favorites:

Thomas Johnson Antique Furniture Restoration: Long, Difficult Restorations

There’s nothing like an intense long-form restoration video. If you’re ready to watch a carpenter turn unsalvageable antiques into priceless treasures, then tune into Thomas Johnson Antique Furniture Restoration. Maybe you should bring some snacks, because the best Tom Johnson videos are painstaking, detailed, and loooong. In a different universe, Thomas Johnson would have a show on the Discovery or History channel.

Our Favorites:

April Bee’s DIY Home Series: Bringing Old Furniture Up to Date

Furniture restoration videos can be a little formulaic. A restorer will strip down a table or a desk, fix any blemishes, apply a finish, and call it a day. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a good formula, but sometimes it’s nice to see an old piece of furniture undergo a complete makeover.

And that’s where April Bee’s DIY Home Series comes in. April Bee knows how to take old furniture and brings it up to date, often with a totally new look and a brand new purpose. She films her videos with static time-lapsed shots, which make the transformation process exciting and easy to follow. Just be careful, you might be inclined to break out some paint after going through April Bee’s channel.

Our Favorites:

Ross Taylor Woodworks: Rapid-Fire Professional Restoration

Ross Taylor is a professional carpenter who uploads his furniture repair jobs to YouTube. No frills, no music, just rapid-fire professional restorations in a well-lit work environment. My favorite thing about Ross’ channel is that he manages to restore some of the oldest crappiest furniture that I’ve ever seen, all while staying casual and informative. I also like that Ross cuts his longer jobs into multiple episodes, so you aren’t stuck watching one long video.

WATCH as police bike is OBLITERATED during high-speed crash in Moscow

A police motorbike crashed into a taxi in Moscow during a high-speed chase. The impact was so powerful that the bike was shattered into pieces, while the cop was sent flying into the air, suffering serious injuries.

The freak accident occurred in Russia’s capital on Thursday afternoon, with surveillance footage surfacing online shortly afterwards.

The disturbing video shows a police motorbike entering an intersection at high speed and crashing into a taxi, which was turning left. The bike apparently passed the intersection on a red light.

The impact appears to have been very powerful, as the bike was literally blown into pieces, while the rider was sent flying and narrowly avoided hitting a light pole. The policeman received multiple serious injuries and was hospitalized.

It was not immediately clear whether the taxi was carrying any passengers at the moment of the crash and if anyone inside the car was injured.

The policeman was chasing a motorist who had failed to stop, local media says. It is difficult to tell from the videos, however, whether the bike had its lights flashing or not.

Paul “Double Rainbow” Vasquez dead at 57

Paul L. Vasquez, whose awestruck reaction at a rare double rainbow made him an internet sensation in 2010, died Saturday at 57.

In the 3-minute, 29-second video, Mr. Vasquez cries out things like, “It’s a double rainbow all the way across the sky!” And, “It’s so bright!” And, “What does it all mean?” There are lots of whoas, and whoos and oh-my-Gods. He laughs during it. He sobs.

The exposure catapulted the apparently laid-back, good-natured guy, called “Bear” by friends, to far more than 15 minutes of fame. For instance, he and a famous “Friend,” Jennifer Aniston, did a Smartwater commercial together. He also did ads for Microsoft and Delta Air Lines.

YouTube TV to gain 14 more ViacomCBS channels in expanded distribution deal

Screen-Shot-2020-05-06-at-7.56.14-PM.png

YouTube TV is expanding its lineup of channels thanks to a new, multi-year distribution agreement with ViacomCBS, announced this morning. The Google-owned streaming TV service is gaining 14 new ViacomCBS channels as a result of the deal, including news, sports, and entertainment offerings. It will also continue to carry CBS broadcast stations, CBS Sports Network, Pop TV, Smithsonian Channel, and The CW.

New channels including BET, CMT, Comedy Central, MTV, Nickelodeon, Paramount Network, TV Land and VH1 will arrive on YouTube TV this summer, where they’ll reach the service’s over 2 million subscribers.

Other channels, such as BET Her, MTV2, Nick Jr., NickToons, TeenNick and MTV Classic, will roll out at a later time as part of YouTube TV’s base package.

In addition, YouTube TV will continue to offer ViacomCBS’ premium subscription services, including Showtime, on its YouTube TV service and as an extended partnership on YouTube’s broader platforms.

The YouTube TV service today costs $49.99/month for a lineup of over 70 networks, including live and local sports, news, shows, movies and more, as well as an unlimited cloud DVR for recording favorites.

“We are thrilled to have reached an expanded agreement with YouTube TV that recognizes the full power of our newly combined portfolio as ViacomCBS,” said Ray Hopkins, President, U.S. Networks Distribution, ViacomCBS, in a statement about the deal. “Google has been an excellent partner, and we look forward to bringing even more of our entertainment networks to YouTube TV subscribers for the first time.”

The YouTube TV deal follows a series of distribution agreements ViacomCBS has secured over the past six months, including a new agreement with Verizon FiOS (disclosure: TechCrunch parent’s parent company is Verizon). The Verizon deal was its first carriage deal for ViacomCBS’ full portfolio of networks since the merger between Viacom and CBS closed in December.

ViacomCBS also did distribution deals with Comcast in January, and with News Corp-controlled Australian pay TV company Foxtel in March.

Meanwhile, the ViacomCBS free streaming service Pluto TV has also recently confirmed new distribution deals with TiVo and Verizon, the latter across Verizon’s wireless network, on connected TV platforms like Stream TV, and on its pay TV service, FiOS.

“We’re excited to launch ViacomCBS’ portfolio on YouTube TV this summer, ” said Lori Conkling, Global Head of Partnerships at YouTube TV, in an announcement. “Our expanded partnership delivers on our promise to offer a premium portfolio of content to our YouTube TV subscribers, as well as across the YouTube platforms.”

Watch a suspected thief instantly discouraged by a fun DIY crime deterrent

Katie and Josh Camarena of Portervilla, California came up an excellent theft deterrent during a rash of crime in their neighborhood. From LADbible:

In a post on Facebook, she explained: “We have been having issues with people coming into our neighborhood to try and steal tools out of vehicles (And anything else they can get their hands on).

“Our flood light didn’t seem to scare them off, so we decided to have a little fun with a motion activated sprinkler that has an impressive amount of pressure.”

Google finally discloses YouTube ad revenue and it's mind boggling

We finally know how much Google is making from ads on YouTube.

Google took in more than $15 billion from YouTube ads in 2019, the company revealed. That number, nearly 10 percent of Alphabet’s total revenue, doesn’t include other sources of revenue from the video platform, including subscriptions.

Google disclosed the numbers, along with revenue for its growing cloud business, for the first time ahead of Alphabet’s fourth-quarter earnings call.

“I’m really pleased with our continued progress in Search and in building two of our newer growth areas — YouTube, already at $15 billion in annual ad revenue, and Cloud, which is now on a $10 billion revenue run rate,” CEO Sundar Pichai said in a statementRead more…

Man slices fruit with a sword in glorious slow motion

If we’re honest, the most entertaining part of The Slow Mo Guys‘ latest video isn’t even the 4K footage of a sword slicing through fruit – it’s Dan’s reaction to getting repeatedly clunked in the face by giant tomatoes.

“That would look amazing,” says Gav at 3:43, after Dan’s suggested he simply holds the blade in front of his face while Gav throws fruit at him. “But there’s no way I’m not going to beam you in the head with it.”

You can probably guess what happens exactly 45 seconds later.
