1791.jpg?width=1200&height=630&quality=8

Pair aged 22 and 23 expected to make full recovery, as 11 lions and two tigers at the zoo also test positive

Two hyenas at the Denver zoo have tested positive for Covid-19, the first confirmed cases among the animals worldwide.

Samples from a variety of animals at the zoo, including the spotted hyenas, were tested after several of its lions became ill, according to the National Veterinary Services Laboratories (NVSL). The hyena samples tested presumptive positive at a lab at Colorado State University and were confirmed by the national lab.

Where the wild things are: a trip to Romania’s southern mountains

4800.jpg?width=1200&height=630&quality=8

The reintroduction of bison to the Carpathians is a boon for nature – and local communities – as our writer discovers on a hiking break

“From this pile of logs onwards, we need to be completely silent,” says Georg Messerer, our guide through Romania’s southern Carpathians. His head cocks 45 degrees as a bird starts chirping. “Nuthatch,” he whispers, reaching for his binoculars. “And two red deer.” Georg directs our gaze to a row of apple trees, where sure enough, two deer are grazing.

Georg is an environmental encyclopedia. Give him a fresh footprint or dropping and he can tell you what the animal was and when it was there. Born in Germany, but with extensive guiding experience in Southern Africa, Georg has been guiding here, in the remote hills of Rusca in the Čšarcu Mountains, near the villages of ArmeniČ™, for more than five years – ever since the reintroduction of free-roaming bison to the area began.

A history of humanzees, born from female chimps impregnated with human sperm

The early 20th century was a hotbed of genetic experimentation. One bizarre line of research explored human-nonhuman hybrids, such as humanzees. At least one such case of a humanzee making it to term is described in History of Yesterday:

An evolutionary psychologist by the name of Gordon Gallup stated that in the 1920s the first humanzee was “born” at a secret research facility in Florida.

It’s a perilous time right now for deer in America. On Monday, Minnesota officials enacted an emergency order to stop the local travel and importation of farmed deer, in hopes of slowing down the spread of a universally fatal prion disease among wild deer. Meanwhile, in Vermont, wildlife officials today announced the…

Nearly half of Britain’s biodiversity has gone since industrial revolution

3620.jpg?width=1200&height=630&quality=8

Study shows UK has lost more biodiversity than any G7 country, and is in worst global 10%

Almost half of Britain’s natural biodiversity has disappeared over the centuries, with farming and urban spread triggered by the industrial and agricultural revolutions being blamed as major factors for this loss.

That is the shock finding of a study by scientists at London’s Natural History Museum, which has revealed that the UK is one of the worst-rated nations in the world for the extent to which its ecosystems have retained their natural animals and plants.

How tracking grizzly bears is helping veterans find way back from trauma

4000.jpg?width=1200&height=630&quality=8

A project in western Canada lets former military service members put their skills to use tracking bears with wildlife experts and helps both groups overcome mental and physical wounds

On a recent crisp sunny morning, a small group of wildlife guides and British and Canadian military veterans, reached a ridge in the mountains of British Columbia and found themselves within 15 metres of a grizzly bear.

“He knew we were there. He could smell us but he was just doing his thing,” said Joe Humphrey, a former Royal Marine. The bear walked past them and ambled further up the valley.

New species of tardigrade discovered in ancient amber

When it comes to preserving ancient specimens like bugs and other small creatures, amber is one of the best methods. Amber completely encapsulates and protects the fossilized creature allowing scientists to study it in ways that are impossible with other types of fossils. Researchers have confirmed the discovery of the third-ever tardigrade fossil. The new fossil is a new species … Continue reading

Six canines, all border collies, have proved some possess a remarkable grasp of human language

Your dog might follow commands such as “sit”, or become uncontrollably excited at the mention of the word “walkies”, but when it comes to remembering the names of toys and other everyday items, most seem pretty absent-minded.

Now a study of six “genius dogs” has advanced our understanding of dogs’ memories, suggesting some of them possess a remarkable grasp of the human language.

Stripe zone: on the trail of suburban Maryland’s elusive zebras

Five black-and-white quadrupeds who escaped from a farm last month should be easy to spot around town … shouldn’t they?

Many interesting things have happened in Upper Marlboro in recent years.

In 2014, the Frederick Douglass high school football team recorded a perfect season. In 2019, to celebrate National Pie Day, a local museum hosted a lecture on the “history of pie”. This May, the town bought an electric car.

3455.jpg?width=1200&height=630&quality=8

Voting is underway at Katmai National Park and Preserve of bears who have feasted on salmon running through the Brooks River

America may feel like a divided society but one thing is guaranteed to unite the nation each year: Fat Bear Week, a seven-year-old competition held in October to choose the fattest, most gorged and hibernation-prepared bear in Katmai National Park and Preserve in Alaska.

Fat Bear Week, which closes Tuesday and gathered 650,000 voting participants last year, is the creation of Explore.org, an online showcase for wildlife webcam videos, nature films and photographs that, it says, “creates a portal into the soul of humanity”.
