Deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon has hit the highest annual level in a decade, a new report has shown, despite increasing global concern over the accelerating devastation since President Jair Bolsonaro took office in 2019.

Between August 2020 and July 2021, the rainforest lost 10.476 square kilometers – an area nearly seven times bigger than greater London and 13 times the size of New York City, according to data released by Imazon, a Brazilian research institute that has been tracking the Amazon deforestation since 2008. The figure is 57% higher than in the previous year and is the worst since 2012.

U.S. ships first 2 million Pfizer COVID vaccine doses to Peru

The Biden administration will begin shipping 2 million doses of the Pfizer coronavirus vaccine abroad Monday, with the first batch expected to arrive in Peru directly from the U.S. this week, CNN reports.

Why it matters: President Biden has pledged to make the U.S. “an arsenal of vaccines for the world,” and reached a deal earlier this month to purchase 500 million doses from Pfizer to share with other countries.

The big picture: The U.S. will also ship 2.5 million doses of the Moderna vaccine to Pakistan through the World Health Organization’s global vaccination program, COVAX, a White House official told CNN.

• The Biden administration has vowed to allocate 80 million doses of the U.S. vaccine supply by the end of June, with nearly three-quarters of those being delivered through COVAX.
• The White House did not confirm the number it has donated, but an official told CNN the administration is “currently working through the final stages of clearing all domestic regulatory, legal, and operational hurdles to share every single drop of the 80 million doses we have promised.”

Vaccinations have been key to keeping levels of the Delta variant of Covid-19 low in Ireland at a time when it has been surging in the UK, according to an Irish expert.

There have been 180 known cases of the Delta variant – first identified in India – identified in Ireland, according to the Journal.ie. That accounts for five percent of sequenced cases in Ireland.

The Thai island of Phuket is racing to vaccinate as many people as possible in the hope that, if 70% of the population receives a dose before 1 July, the island will become the first Thai destination to reopen to foreign tourists.

If the island can build its immunity, it could soon come back to life again, said infectious disease nurse Bang-orn Rungruang, who is helping to coordinate vaccines at the Angsana Convention and Exhibition Space. The pandemic, she said, had devastated the island’s businesses.
