The reintroduction of bison to the Carpathians is a boon for nature – and local communities – as our writer discovers on a hiking break

“From this pile of logs onwards, we need to be completely silent,” says Georg Messerer, our guide through Romania’s southern Carpathians. His head cocks 45 degrees as a bird starts chirping. “Nuthatch,” he whispers, reaching for his binoculars. “And two red deer.” Georg directs our gaze to a row of apple trees, where sure enough, two deer are grazing.

Georg is an environmental encyclopedia. Give him a fresh footprint or dropping and he can tell you what the animal was and when it was there. Born in Germany, but with extensive guiding experience in Southern Africa, Georg has been guiding here, in the remote hills of Rusca in the Țarcu Mountains, near the villages of Armeniș, for more than five years – ever since the reintroduction of free-roaming bison to the area began.

La Palma volcano: Lava spews towards sea after further eruptions – video

Further eruptions from Cumbre Vieja volcano  on the Canary Island of La Palma have blown open two more fissures, sending molten rock spewing towards the sea.

Since Cumbre Vieja began erupting on 19 September, activity has “intensified” with earthquakes  registered near the active volcano. 

Residents have been ordered to stay indoors to avoid worsening air quality, or to evacuate from nearby towns

People evacuated from three more towns on the Spanish island of La Palma have been told they will not be able to return to their homes to retrieve their belongings because of the “evolution of the volcanic emergency”.

Rivers of lava raced down the volcano and exploded high into the air on Friday night and the airport was closed as an eruption intensified and entered its most explosive phase so far.

Swedish mountain shrinks by two metres in a year as glacier melts

Researchers say climate change is driving the melting, which has seen Kebnekaise lose more than 20 metres in height since the mid-1990s

Sweden’s only remaining mountaintop glacier, which until 2019 was also its highest peak, lost another two metres in height in the past year due to rising air temperatures driven by climate change, Stockholm University says.

In 2019, the south peak of the Kebnekaise massif was demoted to second in the rankings of Swedish mountains after a third of its glacier melted. Kebnekaise’s north peak, where there is no glacier, is now the highest in the Nordic country.
