Press freedoms crumble as authoritarianism spreads

1631308725689.jpg

The press is being pulverized in places where democracy is deteriorating, leaving the world with little visibility into how those regions are transforming under authoritarian rule.

Why it matters: The COVID-19 pandemic was already taking a huge toll on press freedoms around the world. A new wave of geopolitical tension is exacerbating the issue.

Driving the news: In Hong Kong last week, Next Digital, a media company founded by press tycoon Jimmy Lai, said it was shutting down in response to new Chinese Communist Party restrictions that made it impossible to continue operating.

  • “The climate of fear is unbelievable,” said Mark Clifford, an independent non-executive director of Next Digital’s board. Clifford and other members of the board resigned, citing that environment.
  • “It’s not a kleptocracy, like Russia. They don’t want money. They just really want to silence this voice,” he continued. Beijing regulators essentially made it impossible for the company to operate financially.

The move has shattered hope among press activists that a vibrant free press ecosystem will ever be able to exist in Hong Kong, following the passage of a sweeping national security law imposed by Beijing that dramatically reduces personal freedoms.

  • Lai, who was sentenced to 14 months in prison earlier this year, was one of the most vocal pro-democracy voices in Hong Kong for years.
  • His newspaper, Apple Daily — the biggest publication within Next Digital — shut down in June after authorities froze the bank accounts for the paper and arrested its top leadership. Clifford said Apple Daily sold over 1 million copies on its last day publishing.

The big picture: Hong Kong isn’t alone. Around the world, several countries that were hinging on democracy have seen press freedoms fall apart this past year in response to rising authoritarian regimes.

  • Afghanistan, which saw a vibrant press scene grow over the past two decades, has been radically transformed by the Taliban takeover last month. “Less than a month after taking power, the Taliban seem to be letting their masks fall,” said Reporters Without Borders secretary-general Christophe Deloire, citing reports that the Taliban has been beating and arresting journalists.
  • Belarus: Belarusian President Alexandre Lukashenko has in the past year taken drastic new measures to target the press, including drastic changes to the country’s media laws that make it much harder for journalists to report. His war on journalism made global headlines in May after leaders used a supposed bomb threat to ground a Ryanair flight carrying an opposition journalist.

Amid the pandemic, several countries, like Hungary and the Philippines, introduced “fake news” laws to curb the spread of social media.

  • Such efforts, experts argue, are not meant to quell misinformation, but rather are used to empower autocrats. Leaders of counties like Turkey and Brazil have introduced similar measures.

What’s next: Press experts argue that the rhetoric from the Trump administration inspired other world leaders looking to consolidate power to target the press.

  • The world will be looking to the Biden administration to play a leading role in setting a tone around what the U.S. will deem acceptable.
  • While the Biden administration has pledged transparency domestically, it has also faced some challenges in trying to establish itself as a leader on press freedoms. Press activists condemned the administration’s decision earlier this year not to sanction the Saudi crown prince Mohammed bin Salman for the murder of journalist and American citizen Jamal Khashoggi.

Journalism’s two Americas

1626968300813.jpg

There’s a sharp divide in American journalism between haves and have-nots. While national journalists covering tech and politics on the coasts reap the benefits of booming businesses and book deals, local media organizations, primarily newspapers, continue to shrink.

Why it matters: The disparate fortunes skew what gets covered, elevating big national political stories at the expense of local, community-focused news.

At the local level, newspapers continue to be gobbled up by hedge funds eager to slash jobs for profits. News veterans with more experience are often the first to go.

  • Dozens of journalists at the Chicago Tribune have recently taken buyouts in response to the purchase of its parent company by a hedge fund known for slashing local newspaper jobs for profit.
  • A recent New York Times opinion piece about Julie Brown, the Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist at the Miami Herald who broke the story about Jeffrey’s Epstein’s abuses but often had to pay her own expenses, also underscores that discrepancy.

At the national level, venture money continues to pour into new outlets like Puck and Recount Media, among others, creating more opportunities for those that cover broad national topics, like media, influence, politics and technology.

  • CNN says it will hire 450 new people for its new streaming service, CNN+. While it’s unclear how many of those jobs will be local, it’s reportedly paying one top national anchor over $1 million to be a part of the service.
  • CNET recently announced plans to hire 150 people. While many jobs are remote, most are based in New York or San Fransisco.

Be smart: Such opportunities give national journalists much more bargaining power in salary negotiations and more visibility for book deals.

  • “I can’t sell local books, only national,” says Jane Dystel, a veteran book agent and the president of Dystel, Goderich & Bourret LLC. “For local, they’re not getting paid any advances.”
  • “A reader in the Midwest is not going to want to read about a local L.A. politician no matter how big or rich he is,” Dystel says.

Case in point: Facebook recently said it has been the subject of 368 books. There is a wave of at least 17 new books about Donald Trump, and The New York Times reported last year that there were over 1,200 books written about Trump between 2016 and 2020.

The salary disparity at the local and national levels contributes to broader competitive issues for local outlets.

  • The average base pay for a local reporter job, according to Glassdoor, is $49,061 annually, compared to $65,437 for national reporters.
  • “You don’t want to limit your hiring pool to those who are being financially supported by their family, which is basically what you’re doing by paying someone with a college degree so little,” says Scott Brodbeck, Founder and CEO of Local News Now, which operates several digital outlets in Northern Virginia.

What to watch: There have been hundreds of new digital ventures and newsletter experiments at the local level, but many of those efforts are bootstrapped.

  • “More than half our membership has two or fewer full-time employees for their whole company,” says Chris Krewson, executive director at the trade group LION (Local Independent Online News). “This obviously means they are not even paying *themselves* while they establish themselves.”
  • A recent study from LION, Google News Initiative and the University of North Carolina found that of 700+ digital-first local news outlets, more than half bring in less than $100,000 a year. Only 10% have revenue of more than $1 million annually.

The big picture: Despite an overwhelming number of new efforts trying to bridge the gap between local and national news investments, the delta between the two seems to be growing wider.

  • “I think there is a disparity right now in the sustainable businesses we see with national media companies versus local media companies,” says Fran Wills, CEO of the Local Media Consortium.
  • Willis’ group aims to provide more shared services and technology for local outlets so that their cost structure is lower. “That way, they can pay their journalists more of the revenue that they bring in.”

What to watch: Some local outlets are leaning into partnerships like the Local Media Consortium to save costs.

  • Others are becoming non-profits so that they can accept philanthropic donations, a trend that’s become very popular during the pandemic. Most, however, are still scrambling to find a workable solution.

Spin is Not, in fact Truth

If you’re only getting your news from one source, or from a handful of sources that publish opinion stories that you agree with, you aren’t getting the Truth. The Truth can only be confirmed by multiple, objective, independent sources. The Truth can only be confirmed with facts.

Rumors you read on Reddit or Facebook, or theory-based reporting from partisan ‘news’ outlets like MSNBC, FOX, OAN, NewsMax and others should be taken as such: they are THEORIES. That means you still need FACTS to confirm or disprove.

Being objective means you base your world view on EVIDENCE.

Because a bunch of comments on Tiktok posts say the same thing, doesn’t mean it’s true. ‘A lot of people say’ doesn’t make it true. It just means a lot of people THINK it’s true. If they’ve been lied to, and didn’t fact-check their information, how would you know?

I’m an independent. To stay objective, I read news from all around the world. I take each story in context of ‘Who Published It’ and ‘Who else can confirm it’. If I read an article in Russia Today, I take it as probable Russian spin, possible propaganda. Yet some of the stories are perfectly factual, confirmed by multiple other news outlets.

Musician & Independent Thinker, Jamie Gray

MSNBC will put a left wing spin. Fox will spin it to the right. If you watch BOTH of them and CNN, the facts will be the one’s they all agree on. Sometimes you may have to ignore one side or the other because they are ignoring the facts. Some of the ‘News agencies’ do that more than others, but that’s a rant for another time.

The bottom line is pretty fucking simple: Confirm EVERYTHING by other sources. MULTIPLE sources. Multiple OBJECTIVE sources. That’s the key. What facts are confirmable? Which ones are guesses? Spin?

The truth will set you free. It’s out there…you just have to take the time to look FOR the facts. So you can look AT the FACTS, not the spin they WANT you to believe. If they have to TRY to convince you, it’s probably bullshit. ~jg

Authors Note: All opinions expressed here are just that: opinions. If you don’t like mine, I probably won’t like yours either. Let’s just nod, and walk away. Maybe come back with solutions instead of opinions. Because of the two, only solutions actually matter.

CNN cuts ties with Rick Santorum over disparaging comments

gettyimages-846512726-1.jpg

NEW YORK — CNN is cutting ties with former Republican senator and current TV analyst Rick Santorum over disparaging comments he made about Native American culture.

On CNN, Santorum was a senior political commentator who was often tasked with giving the Republican point of view during campaign coverage. His parting ways with the network was confirmed Saturday by Alison Rudnick, vice president of HLN Communications and CNN Diversity and Inclusion.

He sparked controversy in an April 23 speech before the Young America’s Foundation, a conservative youth organization. Santorum said immigrants created a nation based on the Judeo-Christian ethic from a blank slate.

“We birthed a nation from nothing,” he said. “Yes, there were Native Americans, but there isn’t much Native American culture in American culture.”

The comment prompted Fawn Sharp, president of the National Congress of American Indians, to call him “an unhinged and embarrassing racist who disgraces CNN and any other media company that provides him a platform.”

“To correct the record, what European colonizers found in the Americas were thousands of complex, sophisticated, and sovereign tribal nations, each with millennia of distinct cultural, spiritual and technological development,” she wrote in a statement.

Sharp called on CNN to fire Santorum or potentially face a boycott from more than 500 tribal nations and its allies worldwide.

Santorum later said on Chris Cuomo’s CNN show that he “misspoke” in the sense that it wasn’t clear that he was speaking in the context of the founding of the United States government.

“People say I’m trying to dismiss what happened to the Native Americans,” he said. “Far from it. The way we treated Native Americans was horrific. It goes against every bone and everything I’ve ever fought for as a leader in the Congress.”

Santorum’s comments have garnered blowback before, especially his views on gay marriage and homosexuality. In 2003, he infuriated gay rights advocates by appearing to compare homosexuality to pedophilia and bestiality.
