Ford has new robotic test drivers at its Weather Factory

One of the cooler buildings that Ford has for testing its automobiles is called the Weather Factory. At the Weather Factory, Ford can simulate all types of weather when testing its vehicles to ensure they will perform and function no matter the environment they’re placed in. However, with the range of conditions that can be created inside the building, it … Continue reading

These greedy black holes just swallowed two neutron stars and it’s a pretty big deal

image?fit=796%2C417&url=https%3A%2F%2Fcd
One of the best things about being an astronomer is being able to discover something new about the universe. In fact, maybe the only thing better is discovering it twice. And that’s exactly what my colleagues and I have done, by making two separate observations, just ten days apart, of an entirely new type of astronomical phenomenon: a neutron star circling a black hole before being gobbled up. The two observations were made in January 2020, by the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO) and the Virgo Observatory, both of which detect gravitational waves from the distant cosmos. After 18 months…

China is building its own Hubble-like space telescope with a 2.5-billion pixel camera

image?fit=796%2C417&url=https%3A%2F%2Fcd
Commonly known as the Chinese Space Station Telescope (CSST), Xuntian (Heavenly Cruiser) is readying to become China’s first major telescope in space. Unlike previous space telescopes such as Hubble, this orbiting observatory, due for launch in 2024, will be orbiting alongside the Chinese large modular space station, able to dock with the outpost when needed. One of the most-important characteristics of a telescope is its diameter — which limits how much light it can take in at a single time. The main mirror in Xuntian will have a diameter around two meters (six-and-a-half feet) across, roughly the size of the…

Wallet lost in Antarctica turns up in California 53 years later

2400.jpg?width=1200&height=630&quality=8

Paul Grisham forgot he lost it until rediscovery during demolition work at McMurdo base

Paul Grisham’s wallet was missing for so long at the bottom of the world he forgot all about it. Fifty-three years later the 91-year-old San Diego man has it back along with mementoes of his 13-month assignment as a US navy meteorologist on Antarctica in the 1960s.

“I was just blown away,” Grisham told the San Diego Union-Tribune after the wallet was returned on Saturday. “There was a long series of people involved who tracked me down and ran me to ground.”

The World’s Fastest RC Plane Hit 548 MPH Without a Motor

According to the Guinness World Records, Germany’s Niels Herbrich flew a rocket-powered remote control plane to a record-breaking speed of 465.544 MPH back in 2018. Three days ago, California’s Spencer Lisenby shattered that record by piloting an RC plane to an astounding speed of 548 MPH, but their plane lacked one…

The World’s Blackest Paint and Sparkles Make a Car Look Like the Night Sky

By now we’ve all seen the astonishing results of covering an object in black paint that absorbs over 99% of light—it loses all shape, form, and depth. But what happens when you mix those super-black paints with highly-reflective color-shifting sparkles and then paint a car? The result is like staring into the deepest…

Space balloon company raises funds, will conduct first test flight next year

  • Space Perspective seeks to take people to the edge of space in a pressurized vehicle. [credit:
    Space Perspective ]

A company that plans to send passengers to the edge of space in a pressurized vehicle beneath a large balloon said Wednesday it is on track to fly a demonstration mission next year and has raised the funds needed to accomplish this.

Space Perspective, which is based at Kennedy Space Center in Florida, announced it has raised $7 million in seed funding in a round of funding led by Prime Movers Lab. This funding will help the company conduct an uncrewed test flight in 2021 and continue additional development work on its pressurized Spaceship Neptune vehicle.

Inside this Neptune craft, a pilot and eight passengers will spend about two hours ascending to 30km, above 99 percent of the atmosphere. From this vantage point, beneath a balloon with the diameter of a US football field, the passengers would spend about two hours experiencing the view and “Earth overview” effect. Neptune would then take about two hours descending back to Earth. Envisioned to be nearly 5 meters across, the reusable Neptune is designed to fly as much as once per week. Only the parachute is discarded after each flight.
