Poll: 71 percent think economy is ‘good’

More than seven in 10 Americans believe the U.S. economy is in good shape, according to a new poll, likely contributing to a small bump in President Donald Trump’s approval rating.

Seventy-one percent of those surveyed in the latest CNN Poll, published Monday, say the economy is “very” or “somewhat” good. Only 27 percent believe the economy is in poor shape.

Regarding how the president is handling the economy, a majority of Americans, 51 percent approve, compared with 42 percent who disapprove. Along party lines of those who approve, 92 percent identify as Republicans, 53 percent as independents and only 17 percent as Democrats.

Trump’s overall approval rating is at 42 percent, up 2 percentage points from the last CNN poll, earlier this year.

The latest approval rating puts him near the bottom of the list of modern presidents, in between President Bill Clinton with 44 percent and President Ronald Reagan with 41 percent at this point in their first terms. Both went on to be re-elected for a second term. Trump is up for reelection in 2020.

Of those who approve of Trump, 89 percent identify as Republicans, while 41 percent identify as independents. Only 8 percent identified as Democrats.

In addition, the president’s overall disapproval rating of 51 percent is the lowest it’s been in CNN’s polling during Trump’s tenure.

Approval of Trump in some policy areas is dipping, however.

Only 39 percent back Trump’s handling of immigration, compared with 58 percent who disapprove of it. His approval rating on the topic is down 2 percentage points, from 41 percent in early February.

That month, Trump issued a national emergency to help get funds to pay for his wall along the U.S.-Mexico border. The Republican-controlled Senate last week overwhelmingly passed a resolution to void the national emergency declaration, following in the footsteps of the Democratic-led House. The president vetoed the resolution on Friday, and Congress lacks the two-thirds majority needed to overturn the veto.

Of those polled, 50 percent say that Congress should have passed the resolution, compared with 42 percent who believe it should not have been approved. Only 35 percent approved of Trump’s vetoing the legislation, with 55 percent saying the president should have signed it.

In terms of foreign affairs, 40 percent said they approved of Trump’s job, while 54 percent said they disapproved.

The poll was conducted March 14-17 among a national sample of 1,003 adults reached on landlines or cellphones by a live interviewer. The margin of error is plus or minus 3.8 percentage points for full sample results.
