Everything you know about sleep orgasms is wrong. Here’s the truth.

Everything you know about sleep orgasms is wrong. Here's the truth.

Having trouble sleeping? Hit Snooze is Mashable’s deep dive into how we cope with our collective insomnia and the many ways we can achieve a more peaceful slumber.

Wet dreams were a staple of the “your body is changing” conversations we got as hormonal teens. If you were lucky, your school sex education program or parents taught you that it’s perfectly normal for pubescent boys to orgasm overnight, sometimes without even waking up.

But neither my formal nor informal sex education prepared me for when, as a fully adult woman, I started waking up cumming. Apparently, it’s totally normal, too, and probably happening way more often and to way more people than you think. Read more…

Where to order live plants to keep you company while social distancing

Where to order live plants to keep you company while social distancing

Look, we’re all sad — we miss our friends and family who are social distancing in different homes or different states. At this point we’ll take all the company we can get, even if it can’t talk back to us.

Animal shelters have been overwhelmed with people wanting to foster pets during this time, so you probably won’t be able to bring a cuddly cat or dog home with you. If you do need some extra life around the house, get a plant instead.

There are a few retailers thriving with live plants for purchase. Our favorites right now are Walmart, The Sill, and Bloomscape. (If you’re a plant killer, check out fake plants that look like the real thing.) Read more…

Trump retweets Dr. Fauci facepalming in an amazing self-own

Trump retweets Dr. Fauci facepalming in an amazing self-own

Another day, another large chunk of time spent trying to understand Donald Trump’s Twitter account.

On Tuesday morning, the president retweeted a video that showed director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, Dr. Anthony Fauci, at a White House news conference on Friday. As many know, Dr. Fauci often speaks at the conferences because he’s a key member of of the White House Coronavirus Task Force. However, in this particular video, Dr. Fauci is shown reacting to Trump’s words.

In the clip, Trump can be heard calling the State Department “the Deep State Department.” As he says this, Dr. Fauci looks at Trump, laughs a bit to himself, and then lifts his hand to his forehead to do a more subtle version of a facepalm. Read more…

Dolphins in the Venice canals? Nope, that didn’t happen.

Dolphins in the Venice canals? Nope, that didn't happen.

The global coronavirus outbreak has produced some surreal sights over the past few weeks. Famous tourist destinations in Italy and New York City are ghost towns right now as people have been told to stay indoors. This has led to an onslaught of viral posts claiming things like dolphins are swimming in the Venetian canals because humans are effectively MIA.

Amazing, right? It would be if it were true. The alleged Venice dolphins make up just one example of fake, viral posts centered around animals supposedly reclaiming nature in the absence of humans, as National Geographic pointed outOne tweet about the false phenomenon has close to 40,000 likes, for example.  Read more…

Stephen Colbert shares a powerful message of hope from his back porch

Stephen Colbert shares a powerful message of hope from his back porch

Stephen Colbert’s self-isolation monologues are getting more and more ambitious. On the first day we had a 10-minute update from his bathtub, but now we’ve moved on to the full, 15-minute shebang — additional segments and all.

On today’s Late Show menu are a host of jokes about politics, Cats, social distancing, and a woman who accidentally washed her hands with a block of cheese.

There’s also a final message of hope.

“Everywhere you look, people are looking after each other,” says Colbert. “Getting food or cleaning supplies for their neighbors, regardless of what that neighbor’s politics are. Democrat, Republican, socialist — it doesn’t matter right now. We can still disagree about many things, but this crisis has driven home — literally, home — the truth that this is one great nation, united by our belief in, and our need for, each other.” Read more…

Netflix creates $100 million relief fund for workers impacted by coronavirus

Netflix creates $100 million relief fund for workers impacted by coronavirus

As the coronavirus pandemic continues to impact employment across the globe, Netflix is doing its part to support thousands of entertainment workers now out of a job.

On Friday, Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos announced the streaming company would establish a $100 million relief fund to ease “hardship in the creative community.” The initiative aims to assist not only laid-off Netflix employees, but crew and cast members across the industry — including those who are paid hourly wages and hired on a project-to-project basis.

“Most of the fund will go towards support for the hardest hit workers on our own productions around the world,” Sarandos said in a company blog post. “We’re in the process of working out exactly what this means, production by production. This is in addition to the two weeks pay we’ve already committed to the crew and cast on productions we were forced to suspend last week.” Read more…

The optimal way to remotely watch Netflix with friends

The optimal way to remotely watch Netflix with friends

With many European and American cities in quarantined coronavirus lockdown, the world’s hottest club is now the internet.

Or, more specifically, streaming services.

In lieu of the ability to spend time together physically, people are finding creative ways to watch shows and movies with their friends by streaming the same thing at the same time and chatting about it through text or video chats.

A boon for this co-remote streaming effort is the genius (and free) Chrome browser extension Netflix Party. The extension enables everyone in a group to watch a show or movie on Netflix in sync. So your entertainment of choice will start up at the same time as the rest of the group and, if someone pauses the stream, it pauses and resumes for everyone. It also has a chat roll on the right sidebar so everyone watching can also chat about it (through typing) in real timeHere’s a detailed explanation of how to install and use it. Read more…

Arnold Schwarzenegger is self-isolating with his tiny pet donkey and horse. That's it.

As the coronavirus outbreak continues to spread, more and more people — especially the elderly, who are considered particularly vulnerable to infection — are turning to self-isolation in order to protect themselves.

Arnold Schwarzenegger is no exception. Well, no regular exception.

On Sunday night, the 72-year-old actor shared a Twitter video of himself at home, casually feeding carrots to his pet horse and donkey while talking about the importance of staying at home to avoid possible contraction of COVID-19, the official term for the disease caused by the virus.

“See the important thing is that you stay at home, because there’s a curfew now,” says Schwarzenegger, in reference to people over 65 being advised to self-isolate in California. Read more…

Americans are hitting bars and bragging about not social distancing

Americans are hitting bars and bragging about not social distancing

The nation’s top infectious disease researchers have repeatedly warned, if not begged, Americans to practice social distancing as the contagious coronavirus spreads through the population.

That’s because, due to a woeful lack of testing in the nation, no one knows how many Americans are infected — and the resulting respiratory disease (COVID-19) is 10 times more lethal than the flu. Sunday morning, Marc Lipsitch, an infectious disease epidemiologist at Harvard University, emphasized this point, noting that the true number of infections is certainly “much higher” than confirmed cases.

But, though some folks are social distancing, many still clearly aren’t. Some are even actively bragging about not doing it. This weekend, journalists and others reported that bars across the nation were packed in Boston, Chicago, Nashville, and New York City. Read more…

Trump’s coronavirus advice is literally the opposite of what he’s doing

Trump's coronavirus advice is literally the opposite of what he's doing

A surprise White House press conference Saturday offered plenty of coronavirus news: The U.S. travel ban will be extended to the UK and Ireland, domestic travel may be restricted, and the president has taken a coronavirus test (result currently unknown). But most notable is the gap between what Trump is saying and doing.

On Saturday morning, Trump tweeted the phrase “social distancing,” a measure recommended by the World Health Organization recommends to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Aside from staying at home as much as possible, it involves giving yourself at least three feet of distance from others in public.  Read more…

‘The Daily Show’ turns coronavirus misinformation from Trump into a disaster movie

'The Daily Show' turns coronavirus misinformation from Trump into a disaster movie

In a country where misinformation spreads faster than the deadly pandemic sweeping the world, only one incompetent leader can get us through. This is PANDUMBIC

“The deadly coronavirus is spreading,” the fake trailer reads. “And the man in charge is the dumbest person alive.”

The Daily Show turned the current crisis into what we all deserve: a disaster thriller. But the disaster isn’t the highly contagious coronavirus, it’s Trump’s complete lack of preparation. From promising vaccines that don’t exist yet to shaking hands despite the Centers for Disease Control’s warnings to avoid touching, our president is clearly equipped to forge the way through what the World Health Organization just classified as a pandemic.  Read more…

Bailey, Elizabeth Warren’s very good dog, stole and ate a burrito

Bailey, Elizabeth Warren's very good dog, stole and ate a burrito

OK, so technically Bailey — Elizabeth Warren’s very good golden retriever — stole someone’s burrito. But damn if he didn’t look adorable doing it and who could blame the pup?

Warren suspended her presidential campaign on Thursday and Bailey was simply done with the decorum that comes with being a potential First Dog.

Warren staffer Gabrielle Farrell posted a short clip of Bailey munching on an illicitly obtained burrito. In the six-second video, a rush of people attempt to pry the treat away from the pup, but none seem to have much success. Bailey was determined.

It is not clear from whom Bailey stole the burrito or if the rest of the treat was later surrendered to the good dog.  Read more…

Voting on Los Angeles’ new machines was a mess

Voting on Los Angeles' new machines was a mess

Trying to cast a Super Tuesday vote in Los Angeles County was a frustrating experience.

Los Angeles County debuted a new electronic voting system for this primary race — one that took nine years and $300 million to build. The touchscreen-based system was supposed to increase accessibility and make voting more convenient, since polling place workers could confirm voter registration by looking it up on an iPad. Under the new system, voters could also vote at any voting center in Los Angeles County, rather than at predetermined neighborhood precincts. The new systems are also more accessible, as it includes 12 languages other than English and accommodations for physical impairments. Read more…

10 chew toys, as reviewed by my dog

10 chew toys, as reviewed by my dog

This is my dog, Stevie.

A very good girl.

Image: Dylan Haas / Mashable

She’s a lab, boxer, pit bull mix who likes cuddles, sleeping in, saying “hello” to strangers, and, probably more than anything else, chew toys. (And if you were wondering, yes, she’s named after Stevie Nicks.)

To some, picking out a toy for a dog is a pretty low-effort task. And I get it — who would want to scrutinize this kind of stuff? Most people would pick something off the wall at Petco that squeaks and move on with their life.

STEVIE’S CHOICE

GoDog Dragon

GoDog Dragons are unexpectedly tough for a fabric-based chew toy — after an entire month, it’s still going strong, and my dog has pretty much adopted it as her new favorite-for-life.

  • Material: Polyester, “chew guard” fabric
  • First signs of wear: TBD

$16.99 from Chewy

BEST FRISBEE

Ruffwear HydroPlane

Swimming dogs will love the Ruffwear HydroPlane’s ability to float on water, but it also works perfectly as a land-based frisbee, and its tear-resistant fabric lasted impressively long.

  • Material: Foam, abrasion-resistant fabric
  • First signs of wear: About two weeks

$24.95 from Amazon

BEST FOR HIDING TREATS

Kong Extreme

The Kong Extreme is definitely extreme when it comes to durability — it’ll last well beyond a few months, and being able to stuff treats inside makes playtime way more enjoyable.

  • Materail: Rubber
  • First signs of wear: TBD

$13.99 from Chewy

BEST FOR PLAYING FETCH

Chuckit Ultra Ball

It’s time to retire your old tennis ball — the Chuckit Ultra Ball is the best toy for fetch, hands down, and my dog is in love with it.

  • Material: Rubber

BEST FOR YOUNG, TEETHING DOGS

GoughNuts Dog Ring

Your mileage may vary with the GoughNuts ring depending on how harsh of a chewer your dog is, but it should work great for younger dogs.

  • Material: Rubber
  • First signs of wear: Very slight surface damage after two weeks

$21.31 from Amazon

BEST FOR SAFETY

Petstages Dogwood Stick

The Dogwood Stick will most likely fall apart early on, but that’s to be expected. The true value is its safetuy, with less harmful shedding for your dog’s digestive system.

  • Material: Mixture of real wood and synthetics
  • First signs of wear: Two days

$20.99 from Chewy

THIS ONE ISN’T SO GREAT

Nylabone DuraChew Dino

The Nylabone DuraChew didn’t work as well as I thought it would — the nylon started shedding early into playtime, and I had to take the toy away before we could judge its dental care features.

  • Material: Nylon
  • First signs of wear: Two hours

$9.99 from Chewy

BEST NON-CHEW TOY

The Virtually Indestructible Ball

This is the one toy we tested that I don’t think will ever break — mostly because my dog had no clue how to play with it.

  • Material: Plastic
  • First signs of wear: Probably never

$14.99 from Chewy

BEST NYLON TOY

Oneisall Bone

Nylon-based toys ended up not being a great match for my dog, but if they happen to work for yours, the Oneisall is slightly better than the Nylanbone Dino.

  • Material: Nylon
  • First signs of wear: Three days

$11.99 from Amazon

BEST FOR MALLEABILITY

Monster K9 Indestructible Frisbee

While it doesn’t succeed as a *frisbee* per se, the Monster K9 disc is a great extra-strength chew toy that has the potential to last your dog for months at a time.

  • Material: Rubber
  • First signs of wear: Some slight scratching after two weeks

$15.95 from Chewy

This Supreme Court case could criminalize online immigration activism. Here’s why.

When the Trump administration announced plans to phase out Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals in 2017 — the federal program which offers renewable legal status to undocumented immigrant children —  Twitter blew up overnight with hashtags like #HereToStay, #HomeIsHere and #DefendDACA. Three years later, discussions around immigration continue to gain visibility online: Photos and videos of border detention centers go viral on social media, while immigration activists and organizations alike use Twitter to show solidarity and mobilize supporters with hashtags like #NoBusinessWithICE, #CloseTheCamps, and #AbolishICE.
