First, the confession: I’m an arachnophobe, spooked by the most harmless everyday spiders. Close encounters with the scarier sort—the goliath bird-eating spider in an undergraduate zoology class, the venomous redbacks sharing my tent on a research trip to Australia—well, let’s just say they taught me more about myself than about arachnids. And yet I’ve discovered a soft spot for one group of spiders: those undersized males faced with the daunting prospect of sex with a giant mate, often one with murder in mind. Think Attack of the 50 Foot Woman, only with spiders.
Why the sympathy? It’s not because these puny males risk their lives for love. It’s because they’ve evolved such a bizarre array of ways to achieve their ultimate goal of siring spiderlings with a monster of a mother.
Sexual size dimorphism—where one sex is bigger than the other—is nothing too much out of the ordinary: Picture a massive male orangutan, or the bull elephant seal towering over his harem. And many insects and other terrestrial arthropods have large females, because a bigger body can produce more eggs.

Spider cannibalism — the tendency for female spiders to eat their mates during or after sex — is fairly common knowledge at this point. There’s a surprising evolutionary benefit to this copulatory suicide, too, as Ed Yong explained in National Geographic in 2016:

If you must have sex with someone outside of your household or social bubble, dispense with the kissing and consider wearing a mask, says Dr. Theresa Tam, Chief Public Health Officer of Canada. While it sounds silly, the suggestions are scientifically sound. From Dr. Tam’s statement issued this week:
The lowest risk sexual activity during COVID-19 involves yourself alone. If you choose to engage in an in-person sexual encounter with someone outside of your household or close contacts bubble, there are some steps you can take to reduce your risk. The most important step is to establish a trusting relationship with your sexual partner. When engaging in sexual activity you can reduce your risk by:
* Monitoring yourself for symptoms of COVID-19 and not having sex if you or your partner is experiencing symptoms;
* Limiting your use of alcohol and other substances so you and your partner(s) are able to make safe decisions;
* Skipping kissing and avoiding face-to-face contact or closeness;
* Being aware if you or your partner may be at higher risk for more severe outcomes of COVID-19. This includes:
–people of any age with underlying medical conditions;–
–people with compromised immune systems; and
–people living with obesity.
As usual, engaging in safer sex practices, including using condoms, knowing your own STI status and the status of your partner.

Spanish police arrested Nacho Vidal — a porn star with a side hustle making penis candles — for suspected manslaughter following a “mystic ritual” in which participants smoked the psychedelic venom of the Colorado River Toad. According to Vidal’s attorney Daniel Salvador, the fellow who died, photographer Jose Luis Abad, had “previously tried that substance and wanted to try it again” in a “comfortable” setting. Vidal “considers himself to be innocent” and insists the death was accidental. From the BBC News:
The actor, who has featured in hundreds of pornographic movies, had been under investigation for 11 months over the death of the photographer, Spanish police said.
Mr Vidal and the two other suspects were arrested on suspicion of manslaughter and violating public health laws. All three were released provisionally.
Investigators said they had discovered toad rituals were being carried out regularly on grounds they offered medicinal benefits.
But the “apparently harmless ancestral ritual” posed a “serious health risk”, attracting people who were “easily influenced, vulnerable or who were seeking help for illnesses or addictions using alternative methods”, a police statement said.

In South Korea, the soccer team FC Seoul filled out its empty arena with sex dolls posed as fans. The game was closed to the public due to COVID-19 restrictions. After real fans watching the match online spotted the curious figures, FC Seoul issued an apology and claimed it was an honest mistake and that they hadn’t noticed the figures holding up signs with the name of a sex toy company. From CNN:
“The female mannequin dressed in a white short sleeve t-shirt, the breast excessively stood out, and the nipples were protruding, but you didn’t know they were an adult product?” wrote another fan on Instagram. “You are kidding me.”
FC Seoul explained that although the dolls were made to look like real people, rather than conventional mannequins, it had checked they were “not at all related to adult products” before agreeing to install them, and had been told they would be mannequins of the kind commonly used to model clothes.
