Twitter gives paid ‘Blue’ subscribers early access to more new features

52d77790-218d-11eb-a6be-8bf8455a30b4

Twitter has rolled out Labs for its Blue subscription service, which will give its paid users early access to select experimental features. At the moment, one of the first two Labs experiments available to subscribers will give them the capability to upload videos up to 10 minutes long, which is much, much longer than its standard limit of 2 minutes and 20 seconds. That is, so long as they upload their video from a PC. The other experimental feature will allow them to pin their favorite conversations at the top of their inbox by swiping on those particular DM convos.

Labs will accept experimental features from various internal Twitter teams, allowing them to get early data from users. Just like any other test feature, the Labs experiments could be vastly different by the time they’re ready for general release, if Twitter does decide to roll them out.

Like being ahead of the curve?

Today, we’re rolling out Labs πŸ”¬, giving you *early access* to some new features we’re building before everyone else like:
πŸ”Ή Pinned Conversations on iOS
πŸ”Ή Longer video uploads on desktop only

Here are some questions you might be asking:

— Twitter Blue (@TwitterBlue) October 27, 2021

A Blue subscription will set users back $3 a month and will give them access to exclusive features, including folders for organizing bookmarks and a “reader mode.” It also gives users a way to “undo” their tweets. At the moment, it’s only available in Canada and Australia, and it’s still unclear when it will roll out in the US and other countries.

Women ball-gagged by man in Zuckerberg mask as part of St Petersburg flash mob protesting ‘violent’ social media speech censorship

A bizarre and dramatic piece of performance art was staged in Russia’s second city, St. Petersburg, last week, featuring men dressed as tech tycoons chasing and gagging three young women with the logos of major online platforms.

The protest, staged by a notorious flash mob group, came to light when the video was discovered by local news outlets on Tuesday. The clip features three figures dressed respectively as Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey, and Sergey Brin, the co-founder of Google, which owns YouTube. The group violently attacks three women, whose mouths have been grotesquely fitted with ball-gags featuring the symbols of Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube.

One of the activists who staged the performance, Maria Rein, said the rationale behind the protests was to highlight the fact that “violence against freedom of speech occurs publicly all the time, without any hesitation, in front of everyone.” Rein has previously starred in a series of provocative and controversial clips aimed at starting conversations around social issues.

Earlier this year, Russian President Vladimir Putin warned that American tech giants were making increasingly unaccountable decisions over content. “These platforms are, of course, primarily businesses … and what is the primary concern of a business? Making a profit,” he said. “They don’t care if this content or that content causes harm for the people at whom it is directed … After all, these modern IT companies are more and more beginning to control people’s consciousnesses.”

Putin added that there was sometimes a case for restricting access to certain online materials, adding that “we must think about it, and react to it.” But, he insisted, “we must not make decisions that would limit human freedoms – the freedom of choice and freedom of speech.”

On Sunday, Russia’s state media regulator, Roskomnadzor, said that YouTube was a repeat offender when it came to censorship of content from the country. According to officials, the video streaming platform, “more often than other foreign services, restricts access to materials from Russian media. In total, about 30 cases of censorship of Russian publications and information resources have been identified.”

At the same time, they claimed, “YouTube is the leader in the number of unlawful content that has not been deleted.” The agency went on to add that it had sent Google more than 24,000 requests to remove prohibited content, but that close to 5,000 posts had not been removed.

AOC’s Cuba tweet draws fiery response from Florida Dem

7-15-21-aoc-ap-773.jpg

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on Thursday ran into opposition from a prominent Florida Democrat after she called for the U.S. to end its embargo on Cuba, underlining divisions within the party on how to respond to the communist country’s recent upheaval.

“We also must name the U.S contribution to Cuban suffering: our sixty-year-old embargo,” Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) tweeted. “I outright reject the Biden administration’s defense of the embargo. It is never acceptable for us to use cruelty as a point of leverage against every day people.”

Former Florida congresswoman Debbie Mucarsel-Powell publicly chastised the New York congresswoman’s position on Twitter, pointing to “failed policies of a communist regime that has violated human rights, imprisoned & killed dissidents.”

“This is a matter of national security. The US must act,” Mucarsel-Powell tweeted.

The starkly differing positions exemplify a split between progressive and moderate Democrats on the Cuban embargo. Ocasio-Cortez has risen to prominence in the House as part of a progressive coalition. Mucarsel-Powell, who has been advising House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Cuba policy, was ousted from her heavily Latino South Florida district in 2020, when Hispanic voters broke hard for Republicans as they pounded Democrats for being socialists. While Miami Democrats ran from the term, Ocasio-Cortez has aligned with Democratic socialists.

Cubans took to the streets in historic protests and demonstrations against the six-decade-old regime this past week, leading to hundreds of arrests.

President Joe Biden’s administration has been slow to react to the unrest despite urgent calls for action from both sides of the aisle.

Meanwhile, Florida Democrats see an opportunity for Biden to help bring democracy to Cuba and, as a result, attract the Hispanic voters who fled the party in the November election.

Biden on Thursday called Cuba a “failed state” in his sharpest recent comments on the island situated just 90 miles from Floridian shores.

Marc Caputo contributed to this report.

Twitter is killing Fleets

5e6e80f0-287f-11eb-be5f-bfeb5d3d2390

Twitter is killing Fleets less than a year after launching the Stories-like feature to all its users. All Fleets will disappear for the final time on August 3rd.

The short lived feature was at times controversial. Soon after it rolled out to all Twitter users last November, many raised questions about how the feature could be used to target others for harassment. Others questioned whether Twitter really needed a “Stories” feature of its own.

In a blog post, Twitter VP of Product Ilya Brown said the company hadn’t “seen an increase in the number of new people joining the conversation with Fleets like we hoped.” Brown added that Spaces will continue to get placement at the top of users’ timelines and that the company is still analyzing the full-screen ads it started testing in Fleets last month (Twitter hinted at the time that the new ad format could eventually make its way to other places in the service, too).

Both Brown and Twitter Product Lead Kayvon Beykpour pointed out that “winding down features every once in awhile” is something the company fully anticipates as it tries to reinvent itself. Twitter has been working on a number of new features that could dramatically change its service – including subscriptions and paid features for creators — and has publicly previewed several newideas it’s considering in recent months.

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene lays into Twitter after lockout for election fraud claims

210118-marjorie-taylor-greene-gty-773.jp

Fresh off a temporary Twitter lockout, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene laid into the social media giant on Monday morning, saying God, not Twitter, is “the judge of humanity.”

On Sunday, Greene (R-Ga.), who has embraced QAnon, baselessly claimed that the Nov. 3 election in Georgia had been “stolen” in a tweet that was restricted by Twitter “due to a risk of violence,” among other restricted tweets posted on Sunday. Twitter also added a label to those tweets, saying her claims of “election fraud [are] disputed.”

A Twitter spokesperson told POLITICO on Monday that her account was “temporarily locked out” due to violations of Twitter’s policies that govern election misinformation. That meant she wasn’t able to tweet, only able to send direct messages and read her feed, according to a policy the spokesperson referenced.

Pro-Trump rioters stormed the Capitol on Jan. 6 after President Donald Trump gave a speech in front of the White House calling on supporters to “be strong.” In the wake of the violence, Twitter suspended tens of thousands of accounts, including President Donald Trump’s permanently.

In a 14-tweet thread on Monday morning addressed to Twitter, Greene lambasted the company for banning Trump from its platform and for its content policies.

“The tweets that you deem ‘appropriate’ and ‘safe’ and ‘true’ compared to tweets you deem ‘inciting violence’ and ‘spreading false information’ and ‘claims of election fraud is disputed’ are so many times, in the opinion of many, quit hypocritical and false,” Greene said in the thread. “Without debate of ideas, opinions, and arguing truth, Twitter and similar police state platforms will eventually lose.”

This isn’t the first time a social network has taken action on her posts.

In September, a Facebook spokesperson said the company removed a photo she posted of her holding a gun next to images of Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.) and Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) that called on people to “go on the offense against these socialists.”

The freshman lawmaker, who POLITICO revealed in June has been in Facebook videos showing her expressing racist, Islamophobic and anti-Semitic views, won a heavily Republican Georgia district. She has joined fellow freshman Lauren Boebert (R- Colo.) in a camp that has been highly supportive of Trump and delved into conspiracy theories, splintering the new GOP class.

Trump has called Greene a “future Republican Star.”

Trump’s existential threat: How to keep GOP in line without Twitter

gettyimages-1295389847-c.jpg

Donald Trump was meeting then-campaign manager Brad Parscale and other political aides in the White House Cabinet Room early last year when the president made a demand: Find me a social media platform to use other than Twitter.

Someone in the meeting had piped up with concern that Twitter — Trump’s primary outlet for communicating with his supporters and the outside world — might eventually ban him over controversial posts. The Trump team mobilized after the meeting, with Parscale starting discussions about whether to have the president take up a major presence on the Trump-friendly platform Parler, posting messages there first in order to drive more users to the platform.

Trump never went for the idea, according to two people familiar with the deliberations. He was too fond of Twitter, especially his enormous audience on the platform. But now, after Twitter’s Friday evening decision to permanently ban him, the president will have no choice but to start from scratch somewhere else. And Trump is losing his online bully pulpit as he confronts an enormous political challenge: How to keep the Republican Party in lockstep behind him as a defeated ex-president, in the wake of a deadly riot at the Capitol that he stoked, and as he confronts likely impeachment proceedings.

“No question that Twitter was the president’s megaphone to his supporters and the media. In fact, without Twitter, he may not have been elected in 2016,” said Trump pollster Tony Fabrizio, who worked on the president’s 2016 and 2020 campaigns. “While I am sure he will find other means to communicate with his core loyalists, losing the ability to communicate to 88 million people all at once will definitely diminish his reach post-Jan. 20.”

Trump’s advisers have been preparing a post-presidency political apparatus that could be used to target Republicans he has declared disloyal, such as Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp, South Dakota Sen. John Thune, and Alaska Sen. Lisa Murkowski. Trump will have a massive financial arsenal at his disposal, having raised hundreds of millions of dollars since the election — much of it for a new political action committee he’s formed.

But Trump’s most potent political weapon was always likely to be his Twitter account, which he has long used to rally supporters against those he feels have wronged him. He went after Kemp and Thune repeatedly on Twitter over the last few months, accusing them of undermining his quest to overturn the election.

The mechanics of the social media platform meshed well with Trump’s overall goal of bending Republicans to his will, allowing him to post one attack after another in bursts. The postings drew widespread coverage from media outlets, further amplifying their power.

Trump used his Twitter feed during the 2018 midterm elections to turn his supporters against once-popular Republicans like former South Carolina Rep. Mark Sanford, former Arizona Sen. Jeff Flake and former Tennessee Sen. Bob Corker, who either lost reelection or chose to retire. During the 2020 election cycle, he went after former Michigan Rep. Justin Amash, who left the Republican Party and ultimately didn’t seek reelection.

“Trump just lost his favorite end-around play and is sidelined,” said Scott Reed, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s former senior political adviser.

As they laid the groundwork for the reelection campaign in 2020, Trump advisers recognized that being banned from Twitter could prove devastating. There were ongoing conversations with the president last year about making Facebook his primary social media outlet instead, with aides regarding it as a more conservative-friendly platform. Conversations about Parler continued into the summer. But Trump always fell back onto Twitter.

Current and former Trump advisers were taken aback by Twitter’s announcement of the ban, with some conceding that it could severely hamper his ability to communicate as he approaches post-White House life. One former top adviser to the president remarked: “Without Twitter, he is just a guy talking to himself.”

What platform Trump turns to next is unclear. After Wednesday’s deadly storming of the Capitol, Facebook and Instagram announced that Trump would be banned “indefinitely,” at least through President-elect Joe Biden’s Jan. 20. inauguration. YouTube has yet to ban Trump, but announced earlier in the week that it would suspend any channel echoing baseless claims of voter fraud, something Trump has given voice to.

There has long been talk that Trump could start his own news outlet once he leaves the White House, but people in his orbit have long been skeptical of that idea, reasoning that launching a new platform would be a major enterprise.

Shortly after his account was suspended, Trump turned to his official government Twitter feed to declare that he and his supporters would “look at the possibilities of building out our own platform in the near future.”

“We will not be silenced,” Trump wrote. “Stay tuned.”

The post appears to have been deleted by Twitter shortly after it was published. Twitter also suspended the Trump campaign account.

Many believe that Trump will find another means of getting his message out.

“I always knew that social media platforms were trigger-happy to ban the president. They just were waiting for the right moment. However, it will not stop the president’s ability to communicate. He’ll just post in another place,” said Parscale, who served as digital director on Trump’s 2016 campaign before becoming his 2020 campaign manager.

Others argue that Trump will have numerous other ways of reaching the news media, which is certain to cover post-White House life obsessively.

“It shuts down a major platform, yes, but he has other platforms,” said Kevin Madden, a top spokesperson on Mitt Romney’s 2012 presidential campaign. “He can get on the air via talk radio or call into cable news whenever he wants. Any message or content he wants promoted still has a legion of supporters ready to push it.”

There is also the prospect that Trump’s absence from Twitter could leave a vacuum for one of his children to fill. Donald Trump Jr., who has used social media to establish a following of his own, is widely expected to remain visible and take on a kingmaker-type role in the Republican Party in the months to come.

The younger Trump, who has frequently accused technology companies of being biased against conservatives, took to Twitter after Friday evening’s announcement to castigate the move.

“Censorship is happening like NEVER before!” he posted.

Trump apparently fooled by satirical website’s Twitter story

ap20290037876267-1.jpg

President Donald Trump on Friday shared a story from a known news satire website seemingly in earnest, using the fake report to blast Twitter’s handling of dubious allegations against Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden.

The story tweeted by the president early Friday morning was published by The Babylon Bee — which bills itself online as “the world’s best satire site” — and stated that Twitter had “shut down its entire social network” Thursday to stop the spread of negative news about Biden.

Trump appeared to take the report seriously when he tweeted it from his own account, writing: “Wow, this has never been done in history. This includes his really bad interview last night. Why is Twitter doing this. Bringing more attention to Sleepy Joe & Big T.”

Trump issued his tweet shortly after 6 a.m. Eastern Time, just hours after both he and Biden participated in dueling town hall events conducted live on separate networks.

The president’s message comes amid an effort by Twitter and other social media platforms to prevent the sharing of a controversial New York Post report about Biden and his son Hunter that has drawn widespread skepticism for potentially being fueled by Russian disinformation.

Twitter even temporarily locked the official account for Trump’s reelection campaign Thursday after it shared a video promoting allegations from the Post report, prompting the president to threaten a “big lawsuit.”

‘Roid rage’? Trump confuses internet with barrage of all-caps tweets from hospital

Donald Trump’s fondness for Twitter is no secret, and it seems his Covid-19 quarantine hasn’t slowed him down much; he posted 18 tweets in under an hour on Monday, prompting humorous speculation about possible drug side-effects.

Trump’s Twitter day started early on Monday when he began quoting from the ‘Fox & Friends’ morning show, and it continued as he blasted out several all-caps tweets.

Most of the posts were reminiscent of campaign slogans and consisted simply of a couple of words or phrases, along with plenty of directives to “VOTE!” on November 3. “SPACE FORCE. VOTE!” and “PRO LIFE! VOTE” were among the most popular posts. In one of the more detailed tweets, Trump wrote that people should vote for him or “wave goodbye to low taxes and gun rights!”

A sampling: pic.twitter.com/VU2vN5fWXX

— Manu Raju (@mkraju) October 5, 2020

Trump’s rapid-fire posting attracted even more attention than usual, given that he was presumably tweeting from his Covid-19 quarantine at the Walter Reed Medical Center, where he was admitted on Friday after testing positive for the novel coronavirus.

Speculation quickly mounted that the president’s early morning hectic tweeting pattern was evidence of either some positive or negative outcome from his treatment.

Alright folks, he’s doing just fine pic.twitter.com/FgyzORp5p3

— Saagar Enjeti (@esaagar) October 5, 2020

A common quip among critics was that Trump was experiencing “roid rage” effects due to his Covid-19 medication, and that he had decided to pour the extra energy into tweeting.

Doctor: Ok, Mr. president, we’re putting you on Dexamethasone. There are a few side effects, so you’ll want to be extra careful to project a calm, focused presence…
