Holy crap, the maxed out 16-inch MacBook Pro costs $6,099

If you want a pro machine, you’ll have to pay top dollar for it.

The new 16-inch MacBook Pro, announced Wednesday on Apple’s website, is the most powerful laptop the company has ever built. It starts at $2,399, but that price climbs fast as you start adding more options.

If you tick all the boxes — which include a 2.4GHz, 8-core, 9th generation Intel Core i9 processor; 64GB of RAM; AMD Radeon Pro 5500M with 8GB of memory; and 8TB of SSD storage, the price jumps to an eye-watering $6,099.

Yes, that much.

Image: Apple

As is typical for Apple, memory and storage options add the most to the price. 32GB of memory will cost you $400 extra, while 64GB of memory will cost $800 extra. For storage, a 2TB SSD costs $400 on top of the base price, a 4TB SSD costs $1,000, and adding an 8TB SSD will set you back $2,200.  Read more…

Apple’s China stance makes for strange political alliances, as AOC and Ted Cruz slam the company

GettyImages-1077095122.jpg?w=589

In a rare instance of bipartisanship overcoming the rancorous discord that’s been the hallmark of the U.S. Congress, senators and sepresentatives issued a scathing rebuke to Apple for its decision to take down an app at the request of the Chinese government.

Signed by Senators Ron Wyden, Tom Cotton, Marco Rubio, Ted Cruz, and Congressional Representatives Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Mike Gallagher and Tom Malinowski, the letter was written to “express… strong concern about Apple’s censorship of apps, including a prominent app used by protestors in Hong Kong, at the request of the Chinese government.”

In 2019, it seems the only things that can unite America’s clashing political factions are the decisions made by companies in one of its most powerful industries.

At the heart of the dispute is Apple’s decision to take down an app called HKMaps that was being used by citizens of the island territory to track police activity.

For several months protestors have been clashing with police in the tiny territory over what they see as the undue influence being exerted by China’s government in Beijing over the governance of Hong Kong. Citizens of the former British protectorate have enjoyed special privileges and rights not afforded to mainland Chinese citizens since the United Kingdom returned sovereignty over the region to China on July 1, 1997.

“Apple’s decision last week to accommodate the Chinese government by taking down HKMaps is deeply concerning,” the authors of the letter wrote. “We urge you in the strongest terms to reverse course, to demonstrate that Apple puts values above market access, and to stand with the brave men and women fighting for basic rights and dignity in Hong Kong.”

Apple has long positioned itself as a defender of human rights (including privacy and free speech)… in the United States. Abroad, the company’s record is not quite as spotless, especially when it comes to pressure from China, which is one of the company’s largest markets outside of the U.S.

Back in 2017, Apple capitulated to a request from the Chinese government that it remove all virtual private networking apps from the App Store. Those applications allowed Chinese users to circumvent the “Great Firewall” of China, which limits access to information to only that which is approved by the Chinese government and its censors.

Over 1,100 applications have been taken down by Apple at the request of the Chinese government, according to the organization GreatFire (whose data was cited in the Congressional letter). They include VPNs, and applications made for oppressed communities inside China’s borders (like Uighurs and Tibetans).

Apple isn’t the only company that’s come under fire from the Chinese government as part of their overall response to the unrest in Hong Kong. The National Basketball Association and the gaming company Blizzard have had their own run-ins resulting in self-censorship as a result of various public positions from employees or individuals affiliated with the sports franchises or gaming communities these companies represent.

However, Apple is the largest of these companies, and therefore the biggest target. The company’s stance indicates a willingness to accede to pressure in markets that it considers strategically important no matter how it positions itself at home.

The question is what will happen should regulators in the U.S. stop writing letters and start making legislative demands of their own.

Alphabet dethrones Apple as the most cash-rich company

TwitterFacebook

For the first time in a decade, Apple is not the world leader in terms of how much cash it has on hand.

The baton has passed to Google parent company Alphabet, which now has $117 billion net cash, compared to Apple’s $102 billion, the Financial Times reported Thursday.

This does not mean Alphabet has been doing vastly better than Apple; it’s more a matter of different strategies between the companies. Apple, which in 2017 held a record $163 billion, has been reducing its cash mound on purpose, starting with the introduction of a tax reform that year which made it easier for multinational giant corporations to repatriate the cash they had overseas. The company used some of the money on stock buybacks and dividends, effectively reducing its cash position.  Read more…

NYC subway riders will be able to swipe in with Apple Pay starting Friday

If you frequent the New York City subway’s 4, 5, 6 line, you’ve probably seen the new terminals at a variety of stations like Union Square and Grand Central. Located between turnstiles, they’ve all been sporting a curious “Test Phase/Coming Soon” screen. That finally changes this week.

Google already announced its mobile pay solution would be arriving this week, and now its chief competitor is getting in on the action. Apple Pay is hitting select stations this Friday, May 31. When that kicks in, riders will be able to swipe their iPhone or Apple Watch to catch a ride.

The kiosks are actually active, at present, but using them requires a software update — iOS 12.3 and watchOS 5.2.1, respectively. Then a debit or credit card needs to be associated with Express Transit in Apple Wallet, using Face or Touch ID. Once installed, it should work on the iPhone 6s and SE or later, along with the Apple Watch Series 1, 2 and 3, using NFC to get you in.

The system works as you’d expect. Hold the phone or watch up to the display and it beeps you in with a big “Go” on the screen, and a “Done” registering on the device. As long as your credit card is up to date, you should be good to go. How quickly this all works when thousands of New Yorkers are all using the system is another question entirely, of course — there tends to be a kind of learning curve with these sorts of things. And no doubt there will be a bit of a logjam at the turnstiles before the novelty of the system wears off.

Of course, that’s why this is still a kind of test period. At present, the system will be limited to the 4, 5, 6 line between Grand Central-42 Street in Manhattan and Atlantic Ave-Barclays Center in Brooklyn (16 stations in all), along with Staten Island buses. In the case of the 4, 5, 6, that’s almost certainly the most heavily trafficked stations on the most heavily trafficked subway line, so this will be an interesting sort of trial by fire.

It’s also worth noting that the system is currently limited to single-ride passes. That means those who buy daily, weekly or monthly passes (which applies to many New Yorkers, myself included) won’t be able to use the system in that capacity. More fare options are coming by late 2020, by which time the MTA expects to have rolled out Apple on all subway lines and buses, so riders will never have to worry about losing that Metro Card again.

Supreme Court rules against Apple in dispute over app prices

190325-supreme-court-gty-773.jpg

The Supreme Court in a 5-4 ruling Monday concluded that consumers who believe they’ve overpaid for apps can sue Apple and other app store operators on antitrust grounds.

Justice Brett Kavanaugh, siding with the court’s liberal minority, authored the opinion in the case, Apple v. Pepper.

How to Turn Your Mac’s Caps Lock into an Extra Modifier Key

Mac Caps Lock KeyNick Beer / Shutterstock

Unless you’re prone to yelling on the Internet, you probably don’t use Caps Lock for much. That’s weird since it’s right next to a bunch of useful modifier keys. Here’s how to make Caps Lock as handy as the others.

What Can You Do With an Extra Modifier Key?

Perhaps the coolest thing to do is bind fully custom hotkeys. With the use of an app like BetterTouchTool, you can use an extra modifier key to add an empty slate of hotkeys to which you can attach actions. If you want to trigger a shell script or open a new email tab whenever you press Caps+B, you can do that.

You can do the same custom hotkeys without Caps Lock, but you’ll be stuck pressing weird combinations like Shift+Control+Command to not interfere with default shortcuts. With this method, any app that allows you to set your own hotkeys will support the new Caps Lock modifier.

You can also rebind existing shortcuts to use Caps Lock. If there’s an overly complicated shortcut that’s bugging you, you can rebind it in macOS’s keyboard settings to make it easier to press. For example, the hotkey in macOS to take a screenshot of a selection is Shift+Command+5, but you could rebind it to Caps+S.

Repurpose Caps Lock With Karabiner

Now, there’s no way to emulate an extra modifier key properly, so for compatibility reasons, a better way to get this functionality is to remap Caps Lock to act like you’re pressing the Shift, Control, Option, and Command keys at the same time. Since this is such an absurd combination, no app is going to require you to press every one of them for a hotkey, and there should be no interference.

This does mean you’ll lose out on combinations such as Caps Lock+Command, but it should work simply enough with any other alphanumeric key. You can remap Caps Lock to an extra function key, like the F13-20 keys, but it may not work as a hotkey in every app. You can also natively remap the Caps Lock key to Escape (or any other modifier key), but this doesn’t add any extra functionality; it just relocates the key.

RELATED: How to Get Your Mac’s Esc Key Back by Remapping Caps Lock

The app we’ll use to rebind Caps Lock is Karabiner, a free keyboard remapping tool for macOS. Download and install the app, and open the preferences. Under the “Complex Modifications” tab, add a new rule with the button at the bottom.

FaceTime bug lets callers hear you before you answer (really)

Users have discovered a bug in Apple’s FaceTime video-calling application that allows you to hear audio from a person you’re calling before they accept the call—a critical bug that could potentially be used as a tool by malicious users to invade the privacy of others.

When Ars reached out to Apple for a statement, the company replied, “We’re aware of this issue, and we have identified a fix that will be released in a software update later this week.”

The bug requires you to perform a few actions while the phone is ringing, so if the person on the other end picks up quickly, they might not be affected. Knowledge of how to use the bug is already widespread. The steps include:
