AOC: Trump ‘is going to cost lives’ without emergency manufacturing order

200322-aoc-gty-773.jpg

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) urged President Donald Trump on Sunday to order the emergency production of medical supplies, saying his reluctance to do so would “cost lives” as the New York medical system becomes overwhelmed.

“The fact that the president has not really invoked the Defense Production Act for the purpose … of emergency manufactur[ing] is going to cost lives,” Ocasio-Cortez said on “State of the Union“ on CNN.

“We’re thankful to anyone who’s pitching in on this effort, but we are nowhere near the beds and the capacity that we need in this country,” Ocasio-Cortez added.

“We’re hearing it every step of the way from this administration. First we were hearing it was a hoax. Then we were hearing that everything was fine. Then we were hearing that the fundamentals of the economy was OK until the crash comes. And we cannot wait until people start really dying in large numbers to start production.“

She also urged the quick passage of an “emergency relief package” targeted at individuals rather than corporations.

“When this package rolls out, there is no reason for corporate bailouts to be included in an emergency relief package,” she said. “We should be focusing: Is unemployment expanding? Are we getting checks in people’s hands? Are we suspending mortgage, rent and debt payments? If we’re able to do that, if we’re able to get money into households, and stop the bleeding with pauses on money going out of households, then we can get working families through this thing.“

Sanders disagrees with AOC over Medicare for All

200218-aoc-sanders-gty-773.jpg

Sen. Bernie Sanders broke with one of his highest-profile surrogates Tuesday on his signature Medicare for All proposal, suggesting that his policy proposal is already a compromise.

New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez told HuffPost last week that a worst-case scenario with Sanders in the White House is a compromise on health care that ends up adding a public option.

The Vermont senator told CNN’s Anderson Cooper at a Las Vegas town hall that he loves Ocasio-Cortez and credited her for transforming politics and getting young people involved.

“But my view is that Medicare for All, the bill that we wrote, is in a sense already a compromise,” Sanders said.

He added that the proposal has a four-year transition period that would bring down the age required for Medicare eligibility from 65 to 55 to 45 to 35.

“And then we cover everybody,” Sanders said. “No more premiums. No more co-payments. No more deductibles. No more out-of-pocket expenses. And we’re gonna fund it publicly, and, for the average American, it will be a significant, significant reduction in his or her health care costs.”

The Democratic presidential contender later noted that Republicans, too, get sick, pay premiums and are tired of the high costs of health care in America.

“They are as anxious to get into Medicare when they’re 65 as anybody else,” he continued. “I’m not gonna to tell you every Republican supports Medicare for All — that’s not true — but a lot of them do.”

Apple’s China stance makes for strange political alliances, as AOC and Ted Cruz slam the company

GettyImages-1077095122.jpg?w=589

In a rare instance of bipartisanship overcoming the rancorous discord that’s been the hallmark of the U.S. Congress, senators and sepresentatives issued a scathing rebuke to Apple for its decision to take down an app at the request of the Chinese government.

Signed by Senators Ron Wyden, Tom Cotton, Marco Rubio, Ted Cruz, and Congressional Representatives Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Mike Gallagher and Tom Malinowski, the letter was written to “express… strong concern about Apple’s censorship of apps, including a prominent app used by protestors in Hong Kong, at the request of the Chinese government.”

In 2019, it seems the only things that can unite America’s clashing political factions are the decisions made by companies in one of its most powerful industries.

At the heart of the dispute is Apple’s decision to take down an app called HKMaps that was being used by citizens of the island territory to track police activity.

For several months protestors have been clashing with police in the tiny territory over what they see as the undue influence being exerted by China’s government in Beijing over the governance of Hong Kong. Citizens of the former British protectorate have enjoyed special privileges and rights not afforded to mainland Chinese citizens since the United Kingdom returned sovereignty over the region to China on July 1, 1997.

“Apple’s decision last week to accommodate the Chinese government by taking down HKMaps is deeply concerning,” the authors of the letter wrote. “We urge you in the strongest terms to reverse course, to demonstrate that Apple puts values above market access, and to stand with the brave men and women fighting for basic rights and dignity in Hong Kong.”

Apple has long positioned itself as a defender of human rights (including privacy and free speech)… in the United States. Abroad, the company’s record is not quite as spotless, especially when it comes to pressure from China, which is one of the company’s largest markets outside of the U.S.

Back in 2017, Apple capitulated to a request from the Chinese government that it remove all virtual private networking apps from the App Store. Those applications allowed Chinese users to circumvent the “Great Firewall” of China, which limits access to information to only that which is approved by the Chinese government and its censors.

Over 1,100 applications have been taken down by Apple at the request of the Chinese government, according to the organization GreatFire (whose data was cited in the Congressional letter). They include VPNs, and applications made for oppressed communities inside China’s borders (like Uighurs and Tibetans).

Apple isn’t the only company that’s come under fire from the Chinese government as part of their overall response to the unrest in Hong Kong. The National Basketball Association and the gaming company Blizzard have had their own run-ins resulting in self-censorship as a result of various public positions from employees or individuals affiliated with the sports franchises or gaming communities these companies represent.

However, Apple is the largest of these companies, and therefore the biggest target. The company’s stance indicates a willingness to accede to pressure in markets that it considers strategically important no matter how it positions itself at home.

The question is what will happen should regulators in the U.S. stop writing letters and start making legislative demands of their own.

Let’s block ads! (Why?)

AOC to endorse Bernie Sanders today

21581179719_c79adc94cc_k-1.jpg

Following on Ilhan Omar’s endorsement of Bernie Sanders earlier this week, Rep Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is expected to make her own endorsement for Sanders’s candidacy today.

Persistent rumors have Tlaib ready to endorse Sanders as well, though she has lately said that she is not ready to make any public endorsements (she and Sanders are due to visit her district in Detroit this month).

AOC’s endorsement is not surprising, given that she campaigned for Sanders in 2016. The remaining “Squad” member, Ayanna Pressley [D-MA], has not endorsed anyone; her district is in Elizabeth Warren’s home state.

Writing in Vice, Leila Ettachfini presents the case for feminists supporting Sanders over Warren: “But to act as if Warren is inarguably the evolved form of the Vermont senator is simplistic at best. Sanders’ policy proposals on many issues that affect women could be considered more progressive than Warren’s—specifically when it comes to addressing low-income women of color. While Warren wants to reduce rents for Americans by 10 percent, Sanders supports national rent control. While Warren only recently changed her previously unwaivering pro-Israel views, Sanders has condemned the Israeli occupation of Palestine since the 1980s. And while Warren’s newfound support of Medicare for All has left some questioning her commitment to the issue, Sanders has supported single-payer healthcare for decades.”

I am a donor to both Sanders’ and Warren’s campaigns. In anticipation of AOC’s endorsement, I have made another donation to the Sanders campaign. I was also a donor to AOC’s campaign.

It remains unclear whether Sanders’s campaign can fully rebound following the candidate’s heart attack, which required not only a hospital stay but also the insertion of two stents in an artery and drew renewed attention to his age. But for Sanders, the past 48 hours have been some of the most productive of the race.

He raised more than $620,000 from 40,000-plus contributions Tuesday, his campaign said.

Thirty-five percent of all money raised on ActBlue — the main online clearinghouse Democrats use to raise money — between the hours of 9 and 10 p.m. Eastern time went to Sanders, the campaign said, even though there are 18 Democrats in the race and 12 appeared on the debate stage.

But sustaining momentum has been a challenge. After an impressive start, Sanders stagnated over the summer and struggled to keep up with Warren and Biden in the polls. Campaign officials are hoping things will turn out differently this time, particularly as the year’s end is rapidly approaching and candidates do not have unlimited time to mount a surge.

“This is the moment, in our perspective, that everything has to move in the upward direction,” Shakir said. “It was our view that we wanted to start off the fourth quarter with some strength. I think rolling out a couple major endorsements of people who can inspire a lot of young people around this country is a good marker, I hope, of success in the next months to come.”

Watch Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez play with a penguin because it’s pure, uncut goodness

TwitterFacebook

The world can be a cruel, unforgiving place.

But, somehow, watching Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez play and dance with a penguin makes everything just a little bit better. Even if only for a moment.

On Saturday, Ocasio-Cortez tweeted a video of herself and her flipper-sporting friend engaged in a round of what looks to be playful dance. Seriously, it’s adorable. The penguin is all the way in.

“A new day, a new friend,” Ocasio-Cortez wrote of her encounter.

Importantly, Ocasio-Cortez is not roaming around Antarctica. Rather, she appears to be in a science museum or zoo. The display next to the penguin enclosure includes facts about African Penguins — which have a home in the Maryland Zoo, among other places. Read more…

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has a very blunt message about the way we discuss climate change

TwitterFacebook

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has said it before, and she’ll say it again: We’re still not doing enough when it comes to combatting climate change.

“I don’t think that we are discussing climate change the way we need to be discussing climate change as a country,” she told Stephen Colbert on The Late Show. “It is such a huge, broad, systemic issue, and you can’t just say, ‘Is Miami going to exist in 50 years?’ We need to say, ‘What are you going to do about this?'”

AOC went on to praise the young people pushing for a larger climate debate, which she described as a good idea.

“Climate change is an infrastructure issue, it’s a jobs issue, it’s an energy issue, it’s a foreign policy issue,” she said. “We can’t just talk about the Copacabana, you know what I mean?” Read more…

Republican challengers rushing to unseat Ocasio-Cortez

0816aoc.jpg

There aren’t a whole lot of Republicans in Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s Queens and Bronx district, but the few there are all seem to want to run against the firebrand progressive congresswoman.

Seven Republicans have already filed with the Federal Election Commission to run for the seat next year, and at least one more is publicly considering a run.

Any Republican nominee will face distinctly long odds to unseat one of the highest profile members of Congress in an overwhelmingly Democratic district, but that has not stopped would-be challengers from lining up for the chance to take her on. And whoever ends up running in November is likely to get plenty of air time. Ocasio-Cortez has become as much a a target of conservative media as she has a symbol of the newly energized left.

“She’s fired everyone up,” said Rey Solano, one of the slew of conservative challengers in the14th Congressional district. “She’s really annoyed a lot of people.”

Most of the Republicans are running for office for the first time, and they’re honing similar attacks on Ocasio-Cortez: She’s a socialist; she opposed the since-scuttled plans to build an Amazon headquarters in Queens; she supports the Green New Deal that Republicans warn will bankrupt the Treasury.

“The standard-bearer of socialism in America is in CD 14,” said Ruth Papazian, a medical writer from the Bronx who is looking for the Republican nod. “If you’re going to stop the spread of socialism, and especially the encroachment of socialism throughout the outer boroughs, you have to stop [Ocasio-Cortez].”

Papazian is the only Republican to have reported contributions from donors to the FEC through the end of June, with about $10,600 raised. Ocasio-Cortez, by contrast, has raised more than $1.9 million in the first half of the year.

While acknowledging the uphill battle, a number of the challengers are banking on the eventual Republican nominee getting an infusion of help from national Republicans looking to give the polarizing politician a run for her money. The sheer spectacle of the race is likely to draw no shortage of free media as well.

“By simply running against her, whether or not you have a real shot, it’s going to get you attention,” said Jeanne Zaino, a political science professor at Iona College. “All these people see it as a way to make a name for themselves on the Republican side.”

Papazian expects the Republican party to devote significant resources to the race, despite it being seemingly unwinnable.

“I doubt the state and national GOP is going to sit idly by and allow AOC to be re-elected. I think this is going to be a marquee race,” he said.

Scherie Murray, a Jamaican immigrant and mother of three, jumped into the Republican primary last month. Her campaign commissioned a poll that found 62 percent of voters would support a generic Democrat and 28 percent would back a Republican.

But when asked if they would vote to re-elect Ocasio-Cortez or vote for someone else, 37 percent picked the incumbent and 48 percent favored someone else. Without any candidates named, respondents also said they would prefer a candidate who backed the Amazon deal.

“Twenty-five thousand jobs were ousted,” Murray said. “We should be encouraging businesses to come into the state, versus pushing them out.”

Republican hopefuls are also painting the congresswoman as more interested in her growing national fame than her district’s block-by-block needs.

“She’s done a great job making a national profile for herself,” said John Cummings, a high school government teacher from the Bronx. “But we haven’t seen a lot of her around the district.”

Still, Cummings, a former NYPD officer, says Ocasio-Cortez’s upset win last year against longtime congressman and Queens Democratic boss Joe Crowley was one of his inspirations to run.

His students always asked him about running for office, he said.

“My answer was always, ‘I think it’s impossible to come from basically nowhere and take on someone like Joe Crowley,’” Cummings said. “It was softly pointed out to me my excuse was now, quote unquote, a lame one.”

A spokesperson for Ocasio-Cortez did not respond to requests for comment.

Registered Democrats in the district, which covers parts of western Queens and the eastern Bronx, outnumber Republicans by a margin of more than six to one.

“It would be a very uphill battle for somebody to make headway there in that district — very, very tough,” Iona’s Zaino said.

Ocasio-Cortez, who does not currently have a Democratic primary challenger, has proved such an attractive target that some Republicans who don’t live in the district have gotten into the race. The law requires members of Congress to live in the state they represent, but not necessarily the same district.

Murray lives outside the district in Laurelton, Queens. Solano, who owns a medical supply company and formerly ran a Bronx Republican club, is further afield in Somers in Westchester County. “We already started looking at houses in Queens and the Bronx,” he said.

Rich Valdes, a conservative talk radio producer, says he’s considering getting into the race despite currently living in Bergen County, New Jersey.

He formed an exploratory committee months ago when there as “an absence of Republican candidates” in the race and, now that the field is full, may consider backing one of the other contenders.

“I have no interest in running against anybody but her,” he said of Ocasio-Cortez. “It’s been one disaster after another.”

The would-be Republican candidates run the gamut from self-described centrists to devoted Donald Trump supporters.

Miguel Hernandez, a building superintendent with his own construction company on the side, says he was a Democrat until a few years ago when he switched parties over his opposition to abortion later in pregnancy.

He has chipped in more than $5,500 for his own fledgling campaign, and says his experience dealing with broken boilers and leaky pipes has prepared him well for politics.

“I’m very in-demand. I’m always out there at 1 o’clock in the morning, 2 o’clock in the morning fixing their problems, and I’m always the go-to guy,” Hernandez said.

Antoine Tucker, a Bronx entrepreneur, embraces far-right theories like the existence of a “deep state.” He speaks openly about the years he spent in prison for selling drugs, pushing a plan to wipe non-violent ex-offenders’ records clean if they stay out of trouble.

“Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is a puppet,” he said. “I am the only person that can beat her. You’ll see, because I’m going to beat her.”

AOC says Trump is ‘directly responsible’ for El Paso shooting

AOC says Trump is 'directly responsible' for El Paso shootingAlexandria Ocasio-Cortez says that Donald Trump’s divisive rhetoric on immigrants is “directly responsible” for the massacre in El Paso, Texas, over the weekend, where a gunman who posted an anti-immigrant screed online killed at least 22 people.Ms Ocasio-Cortez blamed Mr Trump for creating the hostile environment in America during a vigil Monday in Brooklyn. The president “is directly responsible for what happened in El Paso,” Ms Ocasio-Cortez said, according to the New York Daily news.During her remarks, the freshman Democrat said that “white supremacy is an international terrorist problem,” in reference to the recent gun violence in New Zealand, and said that the problem is being baked into American culture.“There are so many different issues that are weaving themselves into a braid of violence into our country. One of them is white supremacist terrorism,” Ms Ocasio-Cortez said.Ms Ocasio-Cortez is among several prominent democrats who have spoken out forcefully against Mr Trump, and described the president as a racist, since the El Paso shooting. In addition to her, presidential candidate Beto O’Rourke — a native of El Paso and 2020 democratic presidential candidate — has also spoken up to denounce Mr Trump for his racist rhetoric, which has included frequent attacks on Mexicans.“Anyone who is surprised,” Mr O’Rourke said during an interview on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe”, “Is part of the problem right now — including members of the media who ask, ‘Hey Beto, do you think the president is racist?’”“Well, Jesus Christ, of course he’s racist,” Mr O’Rourke said.
