Looks like the Hummer is making a comeback as an electric pickup truck

Looks like the Hummer is making a comeback as an electric pickup truck

The Hummer could be making a comeback as an electric pickup truck.

According to a report from The Wall Street Journal, the Hummer name, once known for outrageous gas-guzzling and general douchebaggery, will be repurposed for a new battery-powered SUV from General Motors as early as 2022.

Rumors of the vehicle’s second lease on life began swirling in summer 2019 when GM president Mark Reuss told reporters the company was considering Hummer as one of many possibilities for its “all-electric future.” Unlike its predecessor, the new Hummer will not be a standalone brand, instead appearing as the first of several large, eco-friendly models available to consumers in the coming years.  Read more…

These are 2019’s most bizarre concept cars

These are 2019's most bizarre concept cars

The streets would be so much more interesting if concept car designs overflowing with far-fetched ideas, jutting angles, and disconcerting shapes made it into the everyday vehicles riding on our roads. Alas, back in reality all we get are endless Priuses crowding parking lots.

So, let’s take a moment to savor the creativity and imagination of some of the wild cars major automakers have dreamt up this year. And remember, these are all concept cars. You won’t be seeing them anytime soon.

Hyundai Elevate

This is a four-legged walking electric vehicle. It’s intended for rescue missions in hard-to-reach-and-traverse places (like snowy mountain peaks, post-natural disaster rubble, and more) and can transform into a driveable vehicle with wheels instead of legs. It’s creepy, but functional.  Read more…

First side view of upcoming Fisker Ocean electric SUV shows its shape

First side view of upcoming Fisker Ocean electric SUV shows its shape

Another electric SUV is vying for your hard-earned cash.

Fisker’s Ocean SUV is expected to arrive by 2022 as a Tesla Model Y and Ford Mustang Mach-E competitor. It’s been a long time coming after an electric luxury sedan from the company flopped several years ago.

Instead of announcing a starting price for the SUV, the company detailed a flexible leasing structure on Wednesday. It also showed a new photo of the vehicle from the side (see above). Yup, it’s an SUV alright.

Last month, the first all-electric vehicle from iconic vehicle designer Henrik Fisker unveiled its name, Ocean, and a slew of environmentally friendly features, like a full-length solar panel roof.  Read more…

Tesla just announced a… DeLorean Monster Truck?

cybertruck-tesla.jpg?fit=1092%2C546&ssl=

The Tesla truck is here. Its stainless steel hide can withstand sledgehammer blows, but its windows are not quite so impervious to enemy action. It’s not clear how long it takes to go from 0-88 MPH, but I’m certain we’ll find out. Jalopnik:

Tesla chose to unveil this here and now because Musk loves Blade Runner. And to date, he’s made some wild claims about what it can do: out-truck a Ford F-150, outperform a Porsche 911, be “literally bulletproof” and ideally start under $50,000. It’s also “the official truck of Mars.”

The man’s a lot of things, but modest isn’t one of them. …

a 14,000-pound tow claim, a 3,500-pound payload claim, three ranges (200 miles, 300 miles and 500 miles), adaptive air suspension and a base price of $39,900 for the rear-wheel drive single-motor version. The max range version, with all-wheel drive and three electric motors, is said to be $69,900.

Production is said to be coming in late 2021, and the tri-motor version is happening in 2022, Musk said.

This is absolutely a survivalist fantasy vehicle. Magical.

Drivers May Be Able to Choose ‘Quiet Vehicle’ Alert Sound

ev-Vlad-TchompalovUnsplash-650x366.jpeg
NHTSA proposed allowing automakers to offer a variety of sound choices for electric vehicles to choose from to alert pedestrians (via Vlad Tchompalov/Unsplash)

One of the perks of driving an electric vehicle is the peace and quiet.

But the absence of noise and vibration from an internal combustion engine also poses a danger to blind, elderly, and young (or distracted) pedestrians and cyclists.

Early last year, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced requirements for “quiet cars” to emit a specific warning sound when moving at speeds below 20 mph.

(Automobiles traveling above 18.6 mph apparently generate enough noise from tire and wind resistance.)

Now, the agency is considering relaxing the rules to allow a suite of alerts from which a driver may select their preference.

In response to a petition from automakers, NHTSA has proposed an amendment “to remove the current limitation of one sound per vehicle model,” Reuters reported.

The department is seeking public comment “on whether there should be a limit to the number of compliant sounds that a manufacturer can install, and what that limit should be.”

I’d like to submit for consideration the entire ABBA back catalog, game show sound effects, and the intonation of a lightsaber being ignited, wielded, and retracted.

You’re welcome, NHTSA.

The long-delayed regulations, first submitted in 2010, will take full effect by 2020, when every quiet vehicle will need some sort of alert mechanism.

The public has until Nov. 1 to register comments on this proposal.

What I learned about cars watching all 8 Fast & Furious movies in 4 days

LOOKS LIKE THEM DUKE BOYS ARE AT IT AGAIN

Enlarge / LOOKS LIKE THEM DUKE BOYS ARE AT IT AGAIN (credit: Universal Pictures)

As of last week, I had never seen any movies in the Fast & Furious franchise. I probably missed the first one in 2001 because I was planning my wedding or something else equally pedestrian. Then, before I knew it, there were seven more, and I had no chance of catching up.

But now the franchise has lasted longer than any of our president’s marriages and has just birthed its first spin-off feature. So I have taken it upon myself to shotgun all eight movies in four days and report back to you what they have taught me about cars.

For the uninitiated, F&F more or less follows the car-crashing bromance of two shredded dude-bros played by Paul Walker and Vin Diesel. The former is a cop-turned-crook-turned-cop-turned-vigilante secret agent. The latter is a street-racing crook who eventually—well, look, there isn’t really a job description for what these guys end up doing by the end of the series. When not racing or knocking heads, their relationship consists of Diesel dispensing blue-collar wisdom in a monotone while Paul Walker stares adoringly.

Elon Musk explains why you shouldn’t charge your Tesla battery to 100%

TwitterFacebook

Electric car batteries should not, generally, be charged to 100%. Long-term, this reduces the battery’s longevity, and Tesla cars actually charge up to 90% by default.

But if you’re pressed for range, should you change this and charge up to 100%? Well, unless you absolutely must squeeze every bit of range out of your battery, the answer is still no.

It’s not just about battery degradation. In a recent Twitter exchange, Tesla CEO Elon Musk explained that regenerative braking does not kick in at full charge, meaning the car is less energy efficient.
