Sophie Turner makes her Quibi debut in the first trailer for ‘Survive’

Sophie Turner makes her Quibi debut in the first trailer for 'Survive'

Quibi’s content lineup includes a long list of familiar faces, and this first trailer for Survive highlights two of them: Game of Thrones star Sophie Turner and The Walking Dead‘s Corey Hawkins (the latter also played Dr. Dre in Straight Outta Compton).

Survive follows the pair after a plane crash leaves them stranded at the top of a snowy mountain. Their dangerous journey through the wilderness, which Quibi will deliver in a series of 10-minute episodes, is based on the novel of the same name by Alex Morel.

Quibi launches on April 10 and Survive should debut in the same month if it’s not right at launch. Read more…

Razzies announce 2020 nominations and yes, ‘Cats’ is a top nominee

Razzies announce 2020 nominations and yes, 'Cats' is a top nominee

The 2020 Razzie nominations got out ahead of Hollywood’s annual Academy Awards ceremony on Feb. 9.

For the uninitiated, the Razzies are basically a 180-degree twist on the Oscars, awarding movies and actors for worst performances of the year. Award “winners” in the past include our very own president, who won two in 2019, one for his “worst acting” in Death of a Nation and Fahrenheit 11/9, and another for “worst screen combo” with his self-perpetuating pettiness.

Trump does not show up among the 2020  nominations but Cats, Rambo: Last Blood, and Madea Family Funeral lead the pack with eight nominations each. While Hollywood is buzzing with Oscar predictions, we’ll be placing our bets for who takes home the most Razzies.  Read more…

Spike Lee to direct a film version of David Byrne’s “American Utopia”

utopia_2.png?fit=1200%2C718&ssl=1

According to an article on Deadline, Spike Lee has signed on to direct a film adaption of David Byrne’s Broadway hit, American Utopia.

Oscar winner Spike Lee has signed on to direct a filmed version of the acclaimed Broadway show David Byrne’s American Utopia. Participant adds another title to its portfolio of films meant to engage positive social change, as it will be lead financier and executive producer for the project. It is financing the film with River Road Entertainment and Warner Music Group.

Said Byrne: “Pinch me. This couldn’t have worked out better for this project. Spike Lee directing and Participant producing — two socially engaged teams, well, three if you count us in the band, coming together in what I feel will be something moving, important, and unlike anything anyone has seen before.”

The 1994 Denise Richards movie where Paul Walker’s brain is inserted into a T-Rex has a new gorier version

Tammy and the T-Rex features Denise Richards (Tammy) and Paul Walker (Michael) as young loverbirds. After Michael is badly wounded by Tammy’s ex-boyfriend, a mad scientist seizes his brain and inserts it into a robotic T-Rex.

The movie was filmed with an R rating in mind, but the violence was removed for its initial release. That missing footage has now been reinserted to form the “gore cut.” Birth Movies Death explains:

While the body count in the kids’ version is (and I suspect I’m recalling correctly here) zero, the “Gore Cut” sees nearly ten minutes of additional footage added to the film, dotting the running time with deaths but mostly contributing two absolutely wonderful added/extended sequences. The best is a sublime bit of surgical slapstick in which Michael’s brain is profoundly mishandled on its way to its dinosaur housing, creating a surprising amount of chaos in a surprisingly small operating theatre. The other comes mid-film, as Michael’s Rexed-out rage increases and he rampages through a high school kids’ party. High schoolers get stomped on, chomped, and killed in more inventive ways I won’t spoil, with a surprising quantity of blood spilled and laughter released. It’s amazing this material was cut, given how expensive it must have been, but on the other hand, it’s amazing the movie was even produced in the first place.

The gore cut will be streaming on Shudder in January.

James Bond ‘No Time to Die’ trailer gives first look at Rami Malek’s creepy villain

James Bond 'No Time to Die' trailer gives first look at Rami Malek's creepy villain

We got a half glimpse of Rami Malek’s character Safin in the No Time to Die teaser on Monday, but there was an inconvenient bit of blurry glass in the way that meant we couldn’t see him all that well.

He’s all there in the movie’s first official trailer, though, and it’s safe to say he looks like a suitably menacing addition to the James Bond franchise.

Malek stars in the 25th Bond installment alongside Lashana Lynch’s ultra smooth new character Nomi and Ana de Armas’ intimidating Paloma, not to mention the ever-serious James Bond (Daniel Craig) himself.

The trailer is the usual mixture of cars, guns, gadgets, and Craig doing his super-spy thing while point blank refusing to crack even the faintest hint a smile. Read more…

Toy Tuesday: The Best James Bond Toys

bond-header.jpg

We’re getting closer to No Time To Die, the last James Bond flick with Daniel Craig as 007. Who will carry the mantle next? That’s still up in the air, but one thing’s for sure: Ian Fleming’s spy franchise is virtually indestructible at this point. The evolution of Bond through multiple actors and geopolitical eras is one of the most interesting stories in cinema history, and there have been some seriously dope 007 toys in his history. Here are 11 of our favorites.

LEGO Aston Martin DB5

LEGO Aston Martin DB5

007 has always been known for having a garage full of truly sweet rides to choose from, most of which have been tricked out by Q to include a variety of gadgets. The LEGO Creator take on the Aston Martin DB5 that he drove in Goldfinger is designed at the larger scale that the company uses for realistic automotive models, measuring over a foot long when fully assembled. The interior is super detailed, with a hidden radar tracker and a gearshift switch that pops the hood to unveil a pair of machine guns that let Bond cut his way through traffic.

12 Inch James Bond Collectible Figure

12 Inch James Bond Collectible Figure

Many people consider Sean Connery the greatest Bond in history, and he’s got a strong case, especially during the character’s 1960s peak. This incredible figure from the minds at Big Chief uses 1/6 scale – the measurements used for the original G.I. Joes – to pack a wild amount of detail and customization into this take on the Scotsman’s spy. Clad in a hand-tailored gray suit, Bond comes with a dozen interchangeable hands and a flabbergasting array of accessories, including a bar of gold bullion, a tracking device and a mint julep. A light-up stand lets you display your spy in style.

Corgi Lotus Esprit Model

Corgi Lotus Esprit Model

Another iconic car from the Bond franchise, our man drove the customized Esprit in The Spy Who Loved Me, delivering one of the series’ coolest moments. As Bond and KGB agent Anya Amasova are making their escape from villain Karl Stromberg’s base in the car, things look dire until, with a flip of the switch the car’s wheels retract, fins sprout and it shifts shape into a submarine. This high-quality die-cast metal replica measures four and a half inches long and is precisely detailed to screen-perfect accuracy.

Funko Pop James Bond

Funko Pop James Bond

Pierce Brosnan’s tenure as Bond was a strange one – the actor was originally offered the role in 1986 to succeed Roger Moore, but was under contract to his TV show Remington Steele at the time and didn’t get to assume the mantle of 007 until nearly a decade later, after the uninspiring Timothy Dalton era. Brosnan’s tenure as the super-spy was pretty uneven, with critics praising his vulnerability and depth while panning the padded plots of the movies themselves. This Funko Pop version of the English actor’s take on James Bond is a solid tribute to his time in the suit.

Sideshow Collectibles Oddjob Figure

Sideshow Collectibles Oddjob Figure

In many ways the 1960s were the peak of Bond’s popularity, as the franchise deviated from Ian Fleming’s novels in unique and sometimes ridiculous ways. 1964’s Goldfinger introduced one of the most iconic henchmen in cinema history with Oddjob, the menacing manservant of evil gold magnate Auric Goldfinger. Clad in a black suit and bowler hat, Oddjob is a master of martial arts with incredible striking power in his rock-hard hands, but if things get out of control he doffs his topper and reveals a razor-sharp blade secreted in the rim. Death by hat seems undignified.

SPECTRE Ring Prop Replica

SPECTRE Ring Prop Replica

Every good spy needs a shadowy organization to struggle against, and SPECTRE has been a thorn in James Bond’s side since the very beginning. Standing for Special Executive for Counterintelligence, Terrorism, Revenge, and Extortion, the group made its cinematic debut in Dr. No and has appeared in multiple films since. Led by the despicable Ernst Stavro Blofeld, SPECTRE has its tentacles in misdeeds all over the world. With this movie-accurate prop replica, you can blend in as a henchman with the group in case you want to do some deep cover work, or just steal office supplies from the closet when nobody’s looking.

Le Chiffre Funko Pop

Le Chiffre Funko Pop

We’ve commented before on the cognitive dissonance between the cutesy visual style of Funko Pops and some of the more mature franchises that they depict, but this might be the apotheosis of that issue. As played by Mads Mikkelsen in 2006’s Casino Royale, the vicious terrorist financier Le Chiffre is strongly implied to be at least partially responsible for 9/11 and in one of the film’s most gruesome scenes beats the hell out of Bond’s ball-bag with a coiled length of rope. Now you can remember that brutal groin torture every time you look over at your Pop shelf!

Sideshow Collectibles James Bond Moonraker Figure

Sideshow Collectibles James Bond Moonraker Figure

Roger Moore is considered by many to be the definitive Bond, and on some days we might agree. 1979’s Moonraker might be the most absurd flick in the Bond franchise, but that just makes us love it all the more. After Star Wars became a global phenomenon, producers rushed this one to the screen to capitalize. 007 has to travel to Earth’s orbit to investigate a space station being used by the villainous Hugo Drax to destroy all human life on Earth with nerve gas. This dope action figure dresses Bond in his spacesuit and gives him a wrist-mounted dart launcher and laser gun for self-defense.

Legendary: James Bond Deck-Building Game

Legendary: James Bond Deck-Building Game

Becoming an agent of Her Majesty’s Secret Service isn’t something that most of us can aspire to, but if you want to step in the expensive shoes of James Bond, there are several ways to do it. Upper Deck’s solid entry in the deck-building card game genre lets 1-5 players go through a suite of classic 007 flicks, combating villains and their henchmen, foiling schemes, and leading up to a climactic confrontation with the Mastermind. Easy to understand rules combine with a surprising amount of strategic depth to create a very replayable game for Bond fanatics.

Polar Lights James Bond Model Kit

Polar Lights James Bond Model Kit

If you want to build your own super-spy, this reissue of the classic Aurora plastic model kit from 1966 will scratch that itch. Back in the day, plastic model kits were the ultimate test of a geek’s creative resolve, requiring pinpoint accuracy with part cutting, gluing and painting to produce a fine finished product. This diorama depicts James Bond peeking out from behind cover, gun at the ready to cut down any enemies that might impede his mission.

Spectre Day Of The Dead Mask Replica

Spectre Day Of The Dead Mask Replica

2015’s Spectre opens with Daniel Craig’s Bond in the middle of Mexico City on the Day of the Dead. To blend in with the revelers on his way to assassinate terrorist leader Marco Sciarra, he dons a bone-white mask that gives him the visage of a grinning skeleton. That mask was custom-designed for the film by award-winning creator Jany Temime, who lent his expertise to creating this screen-accurate replica that you can take home. Cast from the original molds in durable epoxy and then hand-painted, this is an incredible piece that will have visitors to your trophy room talking.

‘Jay And Silent Bob Reboot’ Beat ‘Avengers: Endgame’ (And Every Movie This Year) In One Box Office Feat

View Askew

No matter how many stoners turn out, Jay and Silent Bob Reboot isn’t going to make as much money as Avengers: Endgame. There’s a chance no movie ever will, as it’s currently the highest-grossing film (sorry, Marty) of all-time. But Kevin Smith can still brag that he beat his beloved Marvel Cinematic Universe in one box office feat.

Reboot, which is part of its own cinematic universe (the View Askewniverse), has “raked in $1.1 million from three different days of screenings,” according to Forbes. “But after the sequel’s Tuesday showing in 788 different theaters and Thursday showing in 639 theaters, the film then had a single-theater opening weekend that pulled in $93,520, the highest opening weekend per-theater average of any film in 2019.” It’s common for indies to have a higher per-screen average than blockbusters — slow rollouts build hype, etc. — but there’s nothing common about Reboot making $93,520 per-theater. (For reference’s sake, Endgame opened to $76,601.) It beat 2019’s previous record-holder, Lulu Wang’s lovely The Farewell, and it’s the 42nd highest per-screen average of all-time between There Will Be Blood and The Tree of Life. Good triple feature, imo.

Interestingly, there’s only one non-Disney film in the top-10 weekend theater averages ever (The Lion King is number one overall with a whopping $793,376) and it’s, yup, another Kevin Smith movie: Red State, which debuted to $204,230 per-screen in 2011. His total grosses can’t compete with Disney, but if you’re the exception to the Disney rule when it comes to making money, and lots of it, you’re doing something right.

If you want to see Saban Films’ Jay and Silent Bob Reboot for yourself, click here.

10 new Christmas TV movies from Netflix, Hulu and more

The holidays can be stressful, which is why TV and streaming are there for you as always with the comfort of a cheesy original movie. From live action to animation to romance to horror, the season’s original movies are as emotionally draining as the actual holidays — but in a good way.

We’re not here to judge; on the contrary, we want to make it easier. Here are our top 10 picks for new, wacky movies to watch this holiday season.

1. Holiday in the Wild (Netflix)

Rob Lowe and Kristin Davis spice up the post-breakup self-discovery movie by moving it to Africa (no specific country is named in the trailer). The two white leads star as a woman whose marriage just ended, and her roguishly blandsome safari leader. We know they’re going to fall in love (with each other and with the entire continent of Africa). The story might not be much, but we’ll always have gorgeous scenery and token characters of color to build it out! Read more…

Anna Kendrick in ‘Noelle’ delivers relentless Christmas chaos for Disney+

The following contains spoilers for Disney+’s Noelle.

Santa is dead. That’s the holly, jolly premise of Noelle, a Disney+ original movie debuting for the service’s pre-Thanksgiving launch

There’s no explanation of how Santa died, but without the big guy around, his reluctant son, Nick (Bill Hader), must take up the velvet cap and coat to deliver presents on Christmas Eve. It’s a format tackled by countless other movies, but with an added twist here.

At Nick’s side are his sister, Noelle (Anna Kendrick), his mother, Mrs. Claus (Julie Hagerty), and the Claus family’s personal elf, Polly (Shirley MacLaine). There’s also Cousin Gabe (Billy Eichner), who works in the IT department, an adorable reindeer-in-training named Snowcone, and a gaggle of nosey North Polians eager to see replacement Santa pull off the big delivery.
