‘Jay And Silent Bob Reboot’ Beat ‘Avengers: Endgame’ (And Every Movie This Year) In One Box Office Feat

View Askew

No matter how many stoners turn out, Jay and Silent Bob Reboot isn’t going to make as much money as Avengers: Endgame. There’s a chance no movie ever will, as it’s currently the highest-grossing film (sorry, Marty) of all-time. But Kevin Smith can still brag that he beat his beloved Marvel Cinematic Universe in one box office feat.

Reboot, which is part of its own cinematic universe (the View Askewniverse), has “raked in $1.1 million from three different days of screenings,” according to Forbes. “But after the sequel’s Tuesday showing in 788 different theaters and Thursday showing in 639 theaters, the film then had a single-theater opening weekend that pulled in $93,520, the highest opening weekend per-theater average of any film in 2019.” It’s common for indies to have a higher per-screen average than blockbusters — slow rollouts build hype, etc. — but there’s nothing common about Reboot making $93,520 per-theater. (For reference’s sake, Endgame opened to $76,601.) It beat 2019’s previous record-holder, Lulu Wang’s lovely The Farewell, and it’s the 42nd highest per-screen average of all-time between There Will Be Blood and The Tree of Life. Good triple feature, imo.

Interestingly, there’s only one non-Disney film in the top-10 weekend theater averages ever (The Lion King is number one overall with a whopping $793,376) and it’s, yup, another Kevin Smith movie: Red State, which debuted to $204,230 per-screen in 2011. His total grosses can’t compete with Disney, but if you’re the exception to the Disney rule when it comes to making money, and lots of it, you’re doing something right.

Some Of The Original ‘Lion King’ Animators Aren’t Too Happy About Disney’s Remake

Disney

With over $1 billion dollars to its name at the global box office, Disney’s “live-action” remake of The Lion King is doing quite well for itself. Of course, that’s what happens when a film features the combined star power of Beyonce, Donald Glover, Seth Rogen, and many, many other notable famous actors and musicians. That’s also what happens when, as previous Disney remakes like Aladdin have proven, a studio goes out of their way to push all of the audience’s nostalgia buttons. Even so, there are some who aren’t too happy about The Lion King remake and the trend it represents.

Speaking with HuffPost, several animators, designers and other crew members who worked on the original 1994 animated film shared their feelings — both on and off the record — about Jon Favreau’s remake. “If you polled the crew of the original Lion King, most of them would say, ‘Why? Did you really have to do that?’ It kind of hurts,” claimed David Stephan, who worked on the “Circle of Life” opening and the designs for the hyenas in the original:

“It’s sort of sad that the stockholder is now in the room deciding what movies get made… Disney’s now taken the cover off, and it’s now in your face: ‘Yeah, we just want to make money.’ That’s disappointing as an artist, from a studio that was founded on originality and art.”

Others who shared Stephan’s sentiments weren’t as willing to go on the record, though, as they feared reprisal for their opinions. Even so, most weren’t happy. “I will only get myself in trouble if I comment on the ‘other’ version,” said one. Another added, “There is a huge resentment against these 3D remakes from the original 2D crews. Maybe if we got any kind of royalties it would be different.”

Though not everyone interviewed by HuffPost was angry about the remake. Alexander Williams and Dave Bossert praised Favreau’s film and cautioned against their former coworker’s anger. “I think some of my colleagues forget that when you work on a Disney movie, you don’t own it. They own it,” said the former. The latter, meanwhile, referenced the late Walt Disney himself, noting that he “constantly reused and recycled great stories.”

Weekend Box Office: Will Smith’s Blue Genie Crushes Evil Superman

Disney

Although Disney’s last two attempts to bring back classic movies, Mary Poppins Returns and Dumbo, were not the overwhelming hits the studio was looking for, it appears that the Mouse House has righted the ship with Will Smith’s Aladdin. While it was a mixed bag with critics (56 percent on Rotten Tomatoes), audiences turned out in huge numbers and delivered the film $112 million over the Memorial Day weekend, good for the fifth best Memorial Day weekend opener of all time, and second for Disney, behind Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End. In its first four days, it has already surpassed the overall domestic total for Dumbo.

The $112 million also bests Disney’s Memorial Day opener last year, Solo ($103 million), and is the second biggest opener ever for Will Smith, bested only by Suicide Squad ($133 million). It’s also the best opening ever for director Guy Ritchie, beating Sherlock Holmes at $62.3 million. It could not have come at a better time for Ritchie after two flops, King Arthur: Legend of the Sword and the excellent Man from UNCLE. While critics mostly shrugged their shoulders at Aladdin, audiences were ecstatic with the result, giving the film an A Cinemascore.

Despite it being a big holiday weekend at the box office, holdovers nevertheless occupied the next four slots. John Wick: Chapter 3 — Parabellum had a 57 percent fall, but still earned a tidy $30.5 million over four days, and ends the holiday weekend over $100 million ($107 million), which is $15 million more than John Wick 2 earned over its entire run (and around $65 million more than John Wick). It’s also grossed $181.5 million globally, so far. In its fifth week, Avengers: Endgame continues to impress, earning another $20 million to bring its domestic total to $802 million. After the holiday weekend, it’s going to be less than $100 million away from besting Avatar as the biggest worldwide hit of all time. Pokemon Detective Pikachu is also hanging in, despite new competition from Aladdin, earning $17 million to bring its three-week total to $120 million.

James Gunn will probably be disappointed in the opening weekend numbers for Brightburn, although he only produced it (his brother and cousin wrote the film). The film — Superman crossed with The Omen — didn’t generate much business this weekend, earning only $9 million over four days. Reviews probably weren’t much help, although at 58 percent, it has the same RT score as Aladdin.

Meanwhile, the phenomenal Booksmart — the directorial debut of Olivia Wilde — could not convert all its SXSW buzz into a big opening weekend. It earned only $7.8 million over four days, which isn’t that bad for a teen movie, but also not terrific. I am confident, however, that it will find a lot of life in the home digital market and eventually become something of a cult classic for this generation of teens. Critics certainly loved it (97 percent Rotten Tomatoes), and I believe it will eventually find its audience.

The rest of the top ten were all leftovers. The Hustle scraped together $5.5 million, bringing its total to $31 million. With $5.4 million, A Dog’s Journey now has $16 million in the bank. The Intruder has $32 million after a $3.1 million weekend, and Long Shot is on the cusp of $30 million after a $2 million weekend.

Aladdin is not expected to maintain the number one position next weekend, as it will greet plenty of new competition. The Elton John biopic Rocket Man opens in 3,500 theaters, Jason Blum’s horror film Ma starring Octavia Spencer will take over 2700 theaters, and Godzilla: King of the Monsters opens in 4100 and expects to be King of the box office.
