Japan, so far spared the mass spread of coronavirus that has hit Europe and North America, took urgent new steps on Thursday to respond to what Prime Minister Shinzo Abe described as a “national crisis” following a surge of cases in Tokyo.

Olympics: IOC finally listen to their athletes over Tokyo 2020 and not a moment too soon

The IOC are not alone in adopting a hopeful ‘wait-and-see’ stance similar to those of other governing bodies and governments in response to coronavirus but they are one of the last to heed the warnings

Postponement? Maybe. Cancellation? No way: Tokyo 2020 organizers say they won’t discuss cancellation of Olympic Games

The organizing committee of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games has responded to the IOC’s announcement that it will evaluate plans to hold the Olympics at a later date due to the ongoing coronavirus crisis.

Tokyo 2020 has issued a statement saying that it would discuss the possibility of postponing this summer’s Games, but made clear it has no plans to discuss outright cancellation of the event.

Yoshiro Mori, president of the Tokyo Olympics organizing committee, had said that he backed the idea of reviewing the start date of the games and welcomes deliberations with the IOC.

RT‘The world is not in such a condition’: Japanese PM Abe suggests for first time that Tokyo Olympics could be postponed

“Japan is in a critical state, and the situations in the United States and Europe have been abnormal,” Mori said.

“We are not so foolish as to say we will do it under our first (plan).”

And now the organizing committee has released an official statement laying out their position, which leaves the door open to rescheduling the games, but not giving up the chance to host them.

“While there are currently no regions in Japan where a widespread COVID-19 infection has been confirmed, qualifying events for the Tokyo 2020 Games have been disrupted worldwide by the spread of the infection in many countries,” the statement began.

“A number of athletes and National Olympic Committees have also stated that they are unable to continue training in this environment, and this unprecedented situation has been a cause of great concern to us.

ReutersOlympic chiefs set 4-week deadline to decide on fate of coronavirus-threatened Tokyo 2020 Games

“In light of this situation, Tokyo 2020 held an urgent video conference with IOC President Bach last night, during which we agreed to proceed with detailed discussions of different scenarios, including postponement of the Games, in full coordination with the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, the Government of Japan, relevant Japanese authorities, international sport federations and National Olympic Committees.

“As the IOC has stated, due to the extreme complexity of the Games, a final decision has not been reached at this time, and discussions will be finalized within the next four weeks. Cancellation of the Tokyo 2020 Games is not on the agenda.

“Our thoughts are with all those affected by this crisis, and we will continue to prioritize the safety of athletes, spectators and all other Games participants. As we closely monitor infection trends, we will dedicate ourselves to examining detailed plans for different scenarios, including opening the Games on 24 July, in accordance with the agreement reached yesterday with the IOC. We will continue to work closely with all relevant organizations in order to meet the expectations of the athletes who have been training day and night and the fans who have been looking forward to the Games for so long.

“As we seek to address this unique situation, close coordination with many partners, including the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, the Government of Japan, Tokyo 2020 marketing partners, broadcasters, suppliers and contractors, will be essential. We must be more united than ever in our response. Regardless, what is important now is that the world come together to overcome this crisis. As President Bach stated, ‘[we] wish that… the Olympic flame will be a light at the end of this tunnel.’ We will therefore exert every possible effort to overcome this challenge and deliver the Games.”

Watch Japan’s first robot bartender mix and serve a cocktail

Robotic employees such as hotel concierges and English teachers are nothing new in Japan, but here is its first robotic bartender. QBIT Robotics created this chatty robot that works in one of Tokyo’s Yoronotaki izakaya restaurants.

According to Reuters, “it uses four cameras to monitor customers to analyze their expressions with artificial intelligence (AI) software.” It can pour a beer in 40 seconds and “mix a cocktail in a minute”–although in this video it’s closer to two minutes.

From Reuters:

Japan’s first robot bartender has begun serving up drinks in a Tokyo pub in a test that could usher in a wave of automation in restaurants and shops struggling to hire staff in an aging society…

Finding workers, especially in Japan’s service sector, is set to get even more difficult.

Japan wants to use the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games beginning on July 27 to showcase service robot technology, with organizers planning to use robots built by Toyota Motor and Panasonic Corp to help visitors, workers and athletes.

The robot bartender trial at the pub, which employs about 30 people, will last two months after which Yoronotaki will assess the results.

Fukushima’s radioactive farmland to become clean-energy hub, powering the region & Tokyo metropolitan area

Japan’s Fukushima Prefecture, which suffered one of the world’s worst nuclear disasters eight years ago, is now set to be transformed into a renewable energy hub, with the first solar farm to start working there in January.

The $2.7 billion clean-energy project includes plans for 11 solar farms and 10 wind farms with a total capacity of 600 megawatts and is scheduled for completion by March 2024.

Building wind and solar farms on agricultural land tainted by radiation from the 2011 Daiichi plant meltdown will help rejuvenate the area, which also suffered earthquake and tsunami damage, Masashi Takeuchi, the head of the energy division at the Fukushima prefectural government, said.

According to Takeuchi, who was cited by Bloomberg, the first solar farm will probably be a 20 megawatt project in Minamisoma city in the northern part of Fukushima prefecture.

The government plans to power the entire region with 100 percent renewable energy by 2040.

A new 80-km (50-mile) grid which is also in the works will feed the power into the metropolitan area of Tokyo. The Fukushima government expects renewables to provide 13-14 percent of Japan’s national energy mix by 2030.

“Fukushima is the third largest prefecture in Japan and has diverse resources (solar, wind power, geothermal power, water resources, forest resources, etc.) and has great potential for introducing renewable energy,” the Fukushima prefecture government said.

The accident at the Fukushima nuclear power plant occurred in March 2011 when a massive tsunami triggered by a 9.0-magnitude earthquake, overwhelming the reactor cooling systems. It caused reactor meltdowns, releasing radiation in the most dangerous nuclear accident since Chernobyl in 1986.

Japan’s Typhoon Hagibis triggers deadly floods and landslides

1570948044661.jpg

Typhoon Hagibis triggered deadly floods and landslides as it swept over Japan Saturday, the Wall Street Journal reports.

The latest: Japan’s chief government spokesman Yoshihide Suga told AP at least 7 people were dead and 15 others were missing after the severe storm. It left some 376,000 homes without power and 14,000 homes had no running water, per AP. More than 6 million people were ordered to evacuate as rivers in areas including Tokyo burst their banks amid heavy rain, the WSJ notes.

— NHK WORLD News (@NHKWORLD_News) October 13, 2019

The big picture: Typhoon Hagibis made landfall on Saturday as a Category 2 storm in Honshu, Japan’s largest and most populated island, per the Washington Post and the NYT.

  • Extreme to advisory level flood and landslide risks were issued across most of northern Japan Saturday, and the national meteorological agency issued an emergency to high wave warning for most of the country.
  • Japan’s meteorological agency issued its highest alert level on Saturday for unprecedented rainfall in Honshu — which includes Tokyo.
  • Hagibis was moving north early Sunday and was forecast to return to over the North Pacific later in the day, per the BBC.

Background: Hagibis’ 90 mph boost last week from a tropical storm to a Category 5, 160-mph storm on Monday “marked the speediest leap in storm strength in more than 23 years in that part of the world,” the Capital Weather Gang reports.
