John Cleese’s 30-year-old rant on extremists seems relevant today

British comedy legend John Cleese tweeted a timely message Friday that was recorded some 30 years ago. The footage is from an old Fawlty Towers episode that riffs on extremists, “Extremism makes you feel good, because it provides you with enemies…” Watch:

In related news, BBC-owned UKTV pulled a different Fawlty Towers episode out of streaming services for being racially insensitive (N-word usage). Cleese criticized the decision and it was later reinstated with “extra guidance.”

Speaking to Australian newspaper The Age, Cleese had said: “The Major was an old fossil left over from decades before. We were not supporting his views, we were making fun of them. If they can’t see that, if people are too stupid to see that, what can one say?”

Stephen Colbert feels very reassured by Trump’s tweets about Iran

“It’s not World War Three, and that’s wonderful,” Stephen Colbert said during his Late Show opening monologue on Wednesday. “But it’s not like nothing happened.”

A harried Eddie Murphy popped up as one of Santa’s elves – I won’t spoil his name – in a Saturday Night Live sketch set after a deadly fire breaks out in the North Pole. It all started with a rampaging polar bear, apparently.

Murphy keeps it together for most of the sketch, shouting about the hellish event and openly accusing Santa Claus of having some involvement. Seth Meyers mocks Trump’s weird vendetta against dishwashers

President Donald Trump may have been impeached, but his ranting continues unabated. On Thursday’s episode of Late Night with Seth Meyers, the host examined the Michigan rally Trump held while the impeachment vote took place. Though it was called a “Merry Christmas” rally, the event had a distinctly more Festivus vibe, with Trump taking to the podium to air his many grievances.

Seth Meyers ridicules Trump’s surprise he isn’t being impeached for more stuff

Apparently Trump is surprised he may be impeached over the Ukraine scandal, mainly because he’s done so many other things he thinks Democrats could have drafted impeachment articles on.

“That is an amazing confession,” the host of Late Night with Seth Meyers said during Thursday’s episode. “Think about that. That’s like getting pulled over for a broken taillight and saying, ‘Taillight? I got like 10 dead bodies in my trunk!'”

To be fair, subtlety hasn’t been terribly significant in helping Trump avoid consequences thus far, something Meyers also pointed out.

“Trump has blatantly and repeatedly abused his powers,” said Meyers. “He obstructed justice in the Russia probe, inflicted human rights abuses on migrant families, profited from his office, solicited a bribe, and paid hush money in an illegal scheme to cover up an affair, and on top of all that he attacked a 16-year-old climate activist, Greta Thunberg, simply for trying to save the planet from an existential crisis.” Read more…
