Wildfires Turn Bay Area Skies Orange

It was a strange scene in the Bay Are of Northern California this morning as smoke from wildfires turned the skies a bright orange. The San Francisco Chronicle reports:

Winds are pushing smoke from the north, where multiple wildfires are raging, to the south and into the Bay Area, said Jan Null, a meteorologist who runs a private forecasting service called Golden Gate Weather Services. “North winds are bringing lots of smoke from Oregon,” said Null.

Parts of the Bay Area are reporting ash falling like heavy snow.

It doesn’t smell smoky in San Francisco on Wednesday morning, just as it didn’t for most of Tuesday. Yet the color of the sky turned an even more disturbing, Hades-like orange as everyone woke today, and it’s thanks to fires that are burning far away. https://t.co/nGrYiGDrsZ

The sky over Oakland keeps getting darker and more orange. My phone kept color correcting the actual hue so I busted out my real camera @sfchronicle pic.twitter.com/ENv4WSOhUy

I wish I could share an accurate photo of just how dark, scary, orange, and awful the sky is right now at 9am in the Bay Area without doxing myself, but know that the sun is out, it’s dark, and it looks like Blade Runner rn. pic.twitter.com/PiLkn9CVlT

Rare “Terra the Titan” corpse flower blooming in San Francisco

Something exciting is happening at the San Francisco Conservatory of Flowers. Its massive Amorphophallus titanum, aka corpse flower, is in bloom! Catch “Terra the Titan,” as they’ve named it, on their livestream while you can. The flower, which is known to bloom every seven to 10 years or so, will only be open for roughly 24-36 hours before it collapses and dies. Be glad you can watch the flower from afar. They’re known for their overpowering putrid stench which is said to be reminiscent of rotten flesh.

LiveScience:

There is a good reason for the plant’s strong odor. “It all comes down to science,” said Tim Pollak, outdoor floriculturist at the Chicago Botanic Garden. “The smell, color and even temperature of corpse flowers are meant to attract pollinators and help ensure the continuation of the species.”

Pollak explained that dung beetles, flesh flies and other carnivorous insects are the primary pollinators of this type of flower. These insects typically eat dead flesh. The smell and the dark burgundy color of the corpse flower are meant to imitate a dead animal to attract these insects.

“Corpse flowers are also able to warm up to 98 degrees Fahrenheit (36.7 Celsius) to further fool the insects…The insects think the flower may be food, fly inside, realize there is nothing to eat, and fly off with pollen on their legs. This process ensures the ongoing pollination of the species. Once the flower has bloomed and pollination is complete, the flower collapses.”

Engineering screwup turns Golden Gate Bridge into creepy wind siren

34307687391_42f95e7938_k.jpg?fit=1200%2C

After work on the Golden Gate Bridge’s sidewalks to bolster their wind resistance, nearby residents of San Francisco are complaining that the 1.7 mile-long structure makes a creepy droning noise when it’s windy. The mysterious and unsettling tone is heard in videos posted by Alberto Martinez, Mark Krueger and @reedm. It’s a spectacular example of engineering neglect.

Anthony J.:

“Engineers designed new sides for the sidewalk to help with wind resistance but didn’t take into account the EXTREME sound it creates when wind passes through it. The bridge sings crazy songs now it’s so trippy. It hurts the ears and unbearable it’s that loud.”

City of San Francisco delivers free weed, alcohol, and methadone to homeless staying in hotels

Untitled-1.jpg?fit=680%2C480&ssl=1

These harm reduction based practices, which are not unique to San Francisco, and are not paid for with taxpayer money, help guests successfully complete isolation and quarantine and have significant individual and public health benefits in the COVID-19 pandemic.

— SFDPH (@SF_DPH) May 5, 2020

Harm reduction is a good thing, and giving homeless drug addicts hotels and drugs that they are addicted to is a good thing during a pandemic, but some people don’t get it, such as Twitter commentator T Wolf.
