It’s been a different kind of social distancing as protesters across the globe have united separately to demand racial and social justice as Black people continue to be killed with apparent impunity. Protesters joined again on Saturday to chant and hold signs reminding the world that Black Lives Matter as demonstrations and rallies against racism dotted countries across the map following the police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis on Memorial Day.

The image of now-fired Minneapolis Police Officer Derek Chauvin looking smugly at bystanders record him on video while warning he was killing Floyd has proven too much to ignore for people with any semblance of empathy. Floyd’s death seems to have inspired people nation to nation to speak out against the scourge of racism that has tainted societies for centuries. The protests have shined a light on the public health issues of racism and police violence and what is increasingly their deadly combination in the face of a pandemic that’s infecting and killing Black people at a faster rate than anyone else.

His death prompted immediate protests and violent clashes with law enforcement while others looted and burned down local establishments along with a police precinct. And while protests were still being held in cities and states, Washington, D.C., was bracing Saturday for additional groups of protesters to descend on the nation’s capital and make sure the racist president can hear them loud and clear. Saturday was also the twelfth straight day of protests taking place in the U.S.

One of the ironic consequences of the protests has been how police violence appears to have been increased despite the protests being because of police violence. Much of it has been one-sided as police respond with violence first.

Protesters have been seriously injured and brutalized by police, including a 75-year-old man in Buffalo, New York, recovering from a serious head injury when officers violently shoved the unarmed elderly activist to the ground.

Justin Howell suffered brain damage and a reported fractured skull after being shot in the head with bean bag rounds by a cop at a protest in Austin, Texas. Clips of the scene show cops shooting at volunteer paramedics and protesters carrying Howell’s limp body to get medical attention.

The result has been heightened outrage at the treatment of Black people by law enforcement as well as society at large. It’s forced white people to take good, hard looks at themselves to determine the roles they play in perpetuating or pushing back against racism.

It’s also prompted some leaders to take dramatic stances in favor and against Black Lives Matter. One mayor in Mississippi blamed Floyd for his own death while the mayor of Washington, D.C. decided she would let her actions speak words for her by having “BLACK LIVES MATTER” painted on a street leading up to the White House.

Since protests have erupted all over the world in response to police violence against Black people, cries to #DefundPolice have significantly grown.
The demand has especially been pushed by the Black Lives Matter global network and the Movement for Black Lives, which is an amalgamation of various organizations across the United States.
“We call on localities and elected officials across the country to divest resources away from policing in local budgets and reallocate those resources to the healthcare, housing and education our people deserve,” reads the demands on M4BL’s website. “More officers, guns, jails and prisons are not a solution to longstanding problems of racial disparities, injustice and police violence.”
As people have hit the streets in masses to protest the deaths of people like George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and Tony McDade, M4BL has promoted a Week of Action where people can find different ways to plug in on various issues. Along with defunding the police, M4BL has also demanded actions like immediate relief for Black communities, which have been disproportionately devastated by the coronavirus. They’ve also demanded the rights of protestors be protected.
Since the Week of Action began on Monday, various celebrities have signed on to a M4BL letter calling for the police to be defunded, including John Legend, Lizzo, Taraji P. Henson, The Weeknd, Common, Yara Shahidi, Jane Fonda and more.

The letter from M4BL reads:
“Policing and militarization overwhelmingly dominate the bulk of national and local budgets. In fact, police and military funding has increased every single year since 1973, and at the same time, funding for public health decreased every year, crystallized most recently when the Trump administration eliminated the US Pandemic Response Team in 2018, citing ‘costs.’”
The letter then cited an Urban Institute study that found, “In 1977, state and local governments spent $60 billion on police and corrections. In 2017, they spent $194 billion. A 220 percent increase.” M4BL continued, “Despite continued profiling, harassment, terror and killing of Black communities, local and federal decision-makers continue to invest in the police, which leaves Black people vulnerable and our communities no safer.”
Defunding the police is not a new concept, considering divestment-investment campaigns have been bubbling for years.
Just four years ago, hundreds of New York City activists convened in City Hall demanding the defunding of the New York Police Department and the distribution of reparations to victims of police brutality.
Soon, such demands started to make their way into the platform of people running for office. Janeese Lewis George is one example of someone who advocated defunding the police and she won her election. Despite various attempts by the opposition to vilify George, she won her city council seat in D.C. representing Ward 4.
“We’re told the institution of policing is intended to protect all of us from some suspicious menace, but the fact is that crime is a public health problem, not a battle of military opponents,” explained Lewis George, according to The Intercept. “The transformation of American police departments, especially the MPD, into military units trained to occupy the very communities promised protection is one of the greatest dangers to the future of urban life.”
Instead of police, Lewis George has advocated investing in resources like violence intervention programs. Various examples exist across the country including The Health Alliance For Violence Intervention.
One city has already made moves to defund the police since protests started erupting across the country over recent police shootings. In Los Angeles, Mayor Eric Garcetti pledged that the city would cut $250 million from the police department’s budget and reinvest those funds “in jobs, in health, in education and in healing.” This occurred after Black Lives Matter activists and aligning groups demanded divestment from the Los Angeles Police Department, according to Independent.
As the movement to #DefundPolice grows, time will tell if other mayors and local officials will follow suit.
In an Instagram post celebrating Garcetti’s action “Insecure” star Kendrick Sampson said, “It’s working!!! This is not NEARLY enough but they are listening. Let’s keep pushing and not take no for an answer #DefundthePolice.”

Extinction Rebellion activists have erected a large wood pyramid at Oxford Circus, blocking one of London’s busiest junctions. A Ruptly video shows police cordoning off the area.
In a coordinated act of civil disobedience, the group constructed the wooden structure in the middle of the road. Two protesters then climbed onto it, with several more locking themselves to its base.
Footage shows police blocking off the area as they attempt to coax activists off their wooden creation. A boom lift later arrives at the scene to help authorities snatch the perched protesters.
Extinction Rebellion has blocked transport hubs in London, New York, and other cities as part of its crusade to demand global action to address climate change. The group launched a wave of polarizing protests on October 7. Since then, some 1,642 people have been arrested for participating in the divisive acts of public disobedience.

Technology shrinks the world, makes geography less relevant. People find kinship, common cause, and community on the Internet, across nations and sometimes even languages. When the Internet began to erupt, when its connections began to draw such people closer together, this was anticipated with great hope and excitement. And with reason. At their best, the consequences are wonderful.
But it turns out that, like most major social transformations, this transcendence of geography has come with a slew of unexpected emergent properties, not all of them good. Indeed, some of which probably already need to be mitigated — fast.
It’s great that open-source communities can collaborate across the globe to craft tools which benefit everyone. It’s no bad thing that wealthy professionals in Singapore, San Francisco, Toronto, London, Dubai, and Hong Kong may feel they have more in common with one another than with people who live an hour’s drive away. One world, one humanity, one future. Right?
Except that around the globe, we increasingly see three worlds, sometimes intertwined and intersecting, but still apparently separating a little further every year: the ultra-rich, the rich, and the poor. The 1%, the 19%, and the 80%. The G20 are mostly looking more, not less, like the BRICS. Inequality has fallen between countries, which is good … while simultaneously rising within most countries, which is not.
As nations grow ever more alike, it gets easier for groups to forge common cause across nations. A virtuous cycle … except when it’s a vicious one. Except when bigots, xenophobes, and white supremacists join together. From Steve Bannon to Marine Le Pen to xenophobic Brexiters to the Five Star Movement, to the Kremlin, “white nationalism,” i.e. racist hatred, has been transformed — ironically — into an internationalist network.
But behind that loose-knit network of hate, i would argue, lies another, implicit rather than explicit; that of the ultra-rich, of the Koch brothers and Russian oligarchs and Brexit financiers. Don’t get me wrong. I’m not saying they’re actively collaborating. They aren’t sitting around sending one another Signal messages while stroking white cats.
But I am saying that the ultra-rich have long tried to maintain their positions by dividing the masses, via stoking hate against The Other. They have manipulated democracy in part by hacking its systems — regulatory capture at scale — but also by turning people against taxing oligarchs to give their (mounds of) excess money to the poor, by promoting the fear that this money will go to The Wrong Sort Of People Who Don’t Deserve It. By which is always tacitly meant: immigrants and visible minorities. Oligarchy implicitly monetizes racism.
So is it any real surprise if amoral American oligarchs look at Russia’s racist oligarchy and think, “Hey, those are my kind of people,” closely followed by, “Jeez, that kind of government seems pretty good to me”? To an oligarch, Russia isn’t an enemy of America; it’s a model, it’s what America should aspire to be.
None of this is all that new. The last time inequality was at these levels, aristocrats across Europe who had more in common with each other than with their own “common people” was something of a cliché. And obviously organized racism is as old as humanity, though its recent widespread resurgence across the developed world was a grim surprise.
What is new is how tightly our societies are bound together across nations by technology; how quickly new movements flare up, promulgate, evolve, and transform; and how nation-states and patriotism seem to mean noticeably less to modern progressives and modern conservatives alike with each passing year. These all bring both dangers and opportunities — depending on whether, and/or how fast, players accustomed to the existing world order notice that the rules of the game are changing.
