China Is Not Sending Ducks to Eat Pakistan’s Locusts

No, China is not sending an army of ducks to defeat Pakistan’s locusts.

A report by the Ningbo Evening News—later picked up and distributed by the Associated Press—suggested 100,000 waterfowl would be sent from Zhejiang province to Pakistan to help combat the locust swarms.

After all, China deployed ducks (whose natural diet includes insects) to fight a similar infestation in the Xinjiang region 20 years ago, with purported effectiveness, according to The Guardian.

So who’s to say it wouldn’t work again?

China Agricultural University professor Zhang Long, that’s who.

“Ducks rely on water, but in Pakistan’s desert areas, the temperature is very high,” Zhang, one of a delegation of experts, said.

Instead, he advised the use of chemical or biological pesticides.

The original Ningbo Evening News report quoted Lu Lizhi, a researcher from the Zhejiang Provincial Institute of Agricultural Technology, who claimed ducks are cheaper and less environmentally damaging than pesticides.

They’re also more effective than chickens, apparently.

“Ducks like to stay in a group, so they’re easier to manage than chickens,” Lu said, adding that the freshwater birds can eat more than 200 locusts per day, compared to a measly 70 for poultry.

Billions of desert locusts—appearing in numbers not seen for decades—have already caused extensive damage in Africa and India; Pakistan declared a national emergency earlier this month.

Swarms of the short-horned grasshoppers can fly up to 90 miles a day with the wind and devour enough food for 35,000 people daily.

The AP has updated its story, amended to note that “questions were raised” about the original Chinese report. But respected outlets like Time, Bloomberg, and the BBC (as of press time) are still indicating that a massive duck army is on its way to South Asia.

Extreme locust plague shown swarming Kenya in new video

Extreme locust plague shown swarming Kenya in new video

No, these aren’t fields blossoming with yellow flowers. It’s a swarm of ravenous locusts.

A biologist at Penn State University, David Hughes, posted footage of locusts swarming over Kenya on Saturday. Hughes is working with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (UN FAO) to research the growing locust plagues in Kenya — which the U.N. says could be the worst in 70 years.

Locust plagues, numbering in the billions of frenzied, flying grasshoppers, are essentially impossible to stop once they’ve grown wings and swarm over hundreds of square miles of land, “We’re not going to solve this problem as a human society anytime soon,” Rick Overson, the research coordinator at Arizona State University’s Global Locust Initiative, told Mashable in January. Zoo will name a rat or roach after your ex and feed it to a snake on Valentine

3481624912_181253e273_c.jpg?fit=700%2C46

The San Antonio Zoo in Texas has a special offer for Valentine’s Day. For $25 it will name a pre-frozen rodent after your ex and feed it to snake, reports WNEM News.

If your ex isn’t worth $25, you can name a cockroach (“sourced from professional roach breeders”) for $5 and the zoo will feed it to another hungry animal.

From WNEM:

Even if you (or your exes) don’t live in Texas, you can still participate in this “feeding frenzy” because the zoo will be live-streaming the event on Facebook.

You must submit the first name of your ex on the zoo’s website by Feb. 13.

Climate Change Pushing Bumblebees to Extinction

bumblebee-Tim-HillPixabay-650x366.jpg

Bumblebee species are declining in Asia, Europe, and North America.

A new study from the University of Ottawa found that in the course of a single human generation, the likelihood of a bee population surviving in a given area has dropped an average of more than 30 percent.

“Our results show that we face a future with many less bumblebees and much less diversity, both in the outdoors and on our plates,” study author and PhD student Peter Soroye said in a statement.

No, no one is eating bumblebees. But the insects are important pollinators of wild landscapes and crops like tomato, squash, and berries.

Led by Ottawa professor Jeremy Kerr, Soroye and University College London research fellow Tim Newbold linked the idea of “climate chaos” to decades-old extinctions.

“We’ve known for a while that climate change is related to the growing extinction risk that animals are facing around the world,” Soroye said.

Bumblebees in particular are disappearing at alarming rates.

“We have now entered the world’s sixth mass extinction event: the biggest and most rapid global biodiversity crisis since a meteor ended the age of the dinosaurs,” he warned. “If declines continue at this pace, many of these species could vanish forever within a few decades.”

And it’s all our fault.

The crisis, according to researchers, is “entirely driven by human activities.”

But it could also be stopped by human activities.

Understanding that different species have different tolerances for temperature, the team developed a new way to predict local extinction events.

“[It tells] us, for each species individually, whether climate change is creating temperatures that exceed what the bumblebees can handle,” Newbold explained.

Based on 115 years of data from 66 bumblebee varieties across North America and Europe, scientists were able to see how populations have changed by comparing where bees are now versus where they were historically.

“We found that populations were disappearing in areas where the temperatures had gotten hotter,” Soroye said. “Using our new measurement of climate change, we were able to predict changes both for individual species and for whole communities of bumblebees with a surprisingly high accuracy.”

Their method, which works great for bees, could also be applied to other animals—reptiles, birds, mammals—and, fingers crossed, help stop declines before it’s too late.

“Ultimately, we must address climate change itself and every action we take to reduce emissions will help,” Kerr said. “The sooner the better. It is in all our interests to do so, as well as in the interests of the species with whom we share the world.”

Monster mosquito: Argentinian man stunned as GIANT insect flies through his window

An Argentinian man took to Twitter to share a disturbing image of an unusually massive-looking mosquito after it flew through his window and met its demise after being bug-sprayed by his quick-acting mother.

Ezequiel Lobo, who lives in the Argentine city of Cordoba, posted an image of the enormous insect on Twitter, showing it alongside a normal-sized mosquito for comparison.

“Look at the size of the mosquito that just entered my window,” he wrote, adding that the unnerving arthropod “came in like a champion,” causing his mother to panic and spray it with Raid.

MIREN EL TAMAÑO DEL MOSQUITO QUE ACABA DE ENTRAR POR MI VENTANA (al lado hay uno normal para hacer una perfecta comparación ahre) tengo: miedo pic.twitter.com/aypd1O67wT

— ezequiel (@EzeLobo1) January 22, 2020

Lobo explained that he couldn’t find “anything similar” when he searched online. “Is it a new Chernobyl evolution or am I in Jumanji and didn’t know it?” he asked.

The image quickly went viral, garnering nearly 130,000 tweets and being picked up by Spanish media.

Many tweeters assured Lobo, however, that while scary-looking, the insect in question was likely a psorophora ciliata mosquito, which luckily is not a disease-carrier.

Insect expert Michael H. Reiskind told CNN in 2018 that psorophora ciliata usually show up after flooding and while the bite can be very painful, they don’t usually spread disease – and are only a risk to those who are allergic.

Spanish website Clarin reported that mosquitoes of this size had also appeared four years ago and scientists concluded that they arrive in large numbers after hurricanes. They are four times larger than an average-sized mosquito.

They can even be beneficial for humans as they help eliminate others species that carry diseases like Dengue fever and the Zika virus, the website said.

Un-BEE-lievable! Swarm of invading bees forces footballers to dive for cover in Tanzania (VIDEO)

Players in the game between Young Africans and Iringa United were forced to dive for cover after an unusually large swarm of bees invaded a match between two the Tanzanian sides at Uhuru Stadium in Dar es Salaam.

Per reports, the swarm of bees began to disrupt the game in the 53rd minute when they forced players to dive for cover and seek shelter from the flying insects.

Some of the video from the game seems to suggest that several of the players were stung by the bees, while fans in the stands retreated in an attempt to avoid the animals.

Epic Dragonfly Swarms Appear on Weather Radars in 3 States

It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s a massive swarm of dragonflies?!

Weather radars in Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Virginia are registering what, at first glance, appear to be late-summer rain showers.

But look closer and you’ll find that those bright green blotches are actually mobs of insects.

The National Weather Service in Cleveland last week reported the mass migrations, which look like pulsing storm clouds over the east coast. Similar reports also surfaced in southwest Virginia.

“Around sunrise and sunset, warmer air above us tends to bend the radar beam down toward the ground,” Roanoke-based meteorologist Chris Michaels explained. “This can oftentimes detect wildlife or just overall clutter.”

This is not a sign of the impending apocalypse.

In fact, it is completely normal behavior, according to Ohio State University entomologist Norman Johnson, who said the dragonflies are likely Green Darners, which migrate south in the fall.

The insects don’t usually travel in flocks, he told CNN, but local weather conditions can cause them to “bunch up.”

“The big swarms have been recorded a lot over the years, but they’re not regular,” Johnson said.

Details of dragonfly migration are still unclear; researchers have found the winged creatures travel an average of 8 miles per day, but can fly as far as 86 miles.

The hordes were also spotted in Maryland and New Jersey.

This isn’t the first insect invasion of 2019, though.

In June, the National Weather Service’s radar in San Diego picked up a giant crush of ladybugs—roughly 80 miles by 80 miles—over southern California.

Less than a month later, residents of northeastern Ohio found themselves battling invasive mayflies, which covered cars, houses, and lampposts across Cleveland, Sandusky, and other areas.

Watch: Doctors Find Brown Recluse Spider in Woman’s Ear

One not-so itsy bitsy spider found an interesting place to hide. Doctors in Kansas City, Missouri found a brown recluse spider inside the ear of a woman who had come in complaining of a “swishing” sound.

Susie Torres told KSHB-TV in Kansas City she thought she had water in her left ear. When it would not go away, she went to see a doctor for treatment. A medical assistant first checked her out.

“She ran out and said I’m going to get a couple more people,” Torres said. “She then said, ‘I think you have an insect in there.’”

Doctors later told her they found a venomous brown recluse spider in her ear. Fortunately, the spider didn’t bite Torres.

“They had a few tools and worked their magic and got it out,” Torres said. “I never thought they would crawl in your ear or any part of your body.”

“I was grossed out”: Doctors find brown recluse spider in woman’s ear https://t.co/g2U4vlNCv6 pic.twitter.com/V9q8LELqzN

— 41 Action News (@41actionnews) August 23, 2019

The brown recluse spider, also known as the violin spider, is most commonly found in the Midwestern and southern states of the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). It is brown in color with a characteristic dark violin-shaped (or fiddle-shaped) marking on its head and has six equal-sized eyes.

A bite from a brown recluse spider may cause a stinging sensation with localized pain, the CDC said. The venom of brown recluse can cause a severe lesion by destroying skin tissue (skin necrosis), and this skin lesion will require professional medical attention.
