Tigrayan forces’ capture of two towns raises fears for Ethiopian capital

4000.jpg?width=1200&height=630&quality=8

Addis Ababa at risk after fall of Dessie and Kombolcha as PM urges a fight to the death against rebels

The weekend seizure of two key towns on the main road to Addis Ababa has alarmed Ethiopian leaders who fear that the rapid advances by Tigrayan rebel forces may soon threaten the capital itself.

The sudden push into the towns of Dessie and Kombolcha was accompanied by short bursts of intense fighting that had reportedly subsided by Monday evening. While Dessie was confirmed to have fallen to the rebels on Sunday, the fate of Kombolcha was less clear, with accounts of continuing sporadic gunfire.

Covid live: deaths in Africa rise by 43% in a week; UK reports 48,553 new cases in highest total since mid-January

Africa death toll driven by lack of intensive care beds and oxygen, WHO says; UK also reports 63 more deaths

More than twice as many children and adolescents were referred to mental health services year on year in England as cases hit a record high.

The findings have been called “heartbreaking” and “awful” by the new chair of the Royal College of Psychiatrists’ Faculty of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.

It is difficult to consider these numbers and know that behind each one is a child or young person, and a family, who are in distress. Children and young people’s mental health has been neglected for years and in the meantime, we know that the need is increasing. We were already struggling to meet demand before the pandemic. But the pandemic has absolutely resulted in increase in mental health disorders in children and young people.

Hundreds more bodies than usual are being taken for funerals every day in junta-ruled Myanmar as a new wave of Covid-19 sweeps through the country, services transporting the bodies and arranging ceremonies said.

The number of funerals at the Yay Way cemetery in Myanmar’s biggest city, Yangon, was around 200 per day over the past week, well over double the number that would normally be expected, funeral services said.

Britain found to have funded ‘conversion therapy’ clinics in Africa

2975.jpg?width=1200&height=630&quality=8

Investigation finds UK Aid and USAid money went to centres where ‘condemned’ practice is routinely offered to LGBTQ+ people

The UK government is among major aid donors to have funded clinics in Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania that offer so-called “conversion therapies”, which pressurise gay people to “quit” same-sex attraction, an investigation has found.

In a six-month undercover investigation of the centres, reporters from global news website openDemocracy were told being gay is “evil”, “for whites” and a mental health problem. Among them were facilities linked to some of the world’s biggest aid donors, including USAid and the British government’s fund, UK Aid, run by organisations such as UK-based MSI Reproductive Choices (formerly Marie Stopes International) and Swiss-based Global Fund.

Thousands flee Goma after DR Congo warns of new volcano eruption

2456.jpg?width=1200&height=630&quality=8

Magma detected beneath city and adjoining Lake Kivu, says military governor

Thousands of people scrambled to flee the Congolese city of Goma on Thursday, some picking their way across landscapes scarred with lava, after officials said a second volcanic eruption could happen any time.

Magma, the molten rock that normally stays beneath the earth’s crust, had been detected beneath the city and the adjoining Lake Kivu, Constant Ndima Kongba, the military governor of North Kivu province, said, citing seismic and ground deformation data.

DRC: Goma residents flee as Nyiragongo lava reaches city outskirts

6000.jpg?width=1200&height=630&quality=8

Volcano Mount Nyiragongo erupted during the night but lava flow seems to have lost intensity

Thousands of residents have abandoned their homes in a major city in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo after lava flows from a nearby volcano reached its outskirts.

Lava from the eruption of Mount Nyiragongo destroyed homes on the edge of Goma, which has a population of about 1 million people, but appeared to be slowing by midday on Sunday, giving hope that further damage may be avoided.

‘Bodies are being eaten by hyenas; girls of eight raped’: inside the Tigray conflict

6000.jpg?width=1200&height=630&quality=8

A nun working in war-torn Tigray has shared her harrowing testimony of the atrocities taking place

The Ethiopian nun, who has to remain anonymous for her own security, is working in Mekelle, Tigray’s capital, and surrounding areas, helping some of the tens of thousands of people displaced by the fighting who have been streaming into camps in the hope of finding shelter and food. Both are in short supply. Humanitarian aid is being largely blocked and a wholesale crackdown is seeing civilians being picked off in the countryside, either shot or rounded up and taken to overcrowded prisons. She spoke to Tracy McVeigh this week.

“After the last few months I’m happy to be alive. I have to be OK. Mostly we are going out to the IDP [internally displaced people] camps and the community centres where people are. They are in a bad way.
