One of the entry gates to Kabul airport has been hit by a large explosion only hours after western intelligence agencies warned of an imminent terrorist threat.
The blast, which was confirmed by Pentagon press secretary John Kirby on Twitter appears to have occurred at the Abbey Gate into the international airport, was followed by gunfire and came as several western countries announced the end of their evacuation flights citing an acute threat of an attack possibly within hours.
We can confirm an explosion outside Kabul airport. Casualties are unclear at this time. We will provide additional details when we can.

An explosion at an automotive parts plant in Tianjin, northern China has killed one person and injured at least seven others, according to local authorities.
The blast struck shortly after midday local time at the workshop of Tianjin Jc Auto Parts Corp, near the city’s airport.
Emergency rescue teams were dispatched to the scene, with fire officials saying that no one had been found trapped in the factory. An investigation into the cause of the explosion will be launched.
Seven people who sustained injuries were taken to hospital for treatment, the Bureau of Emergency Management of Tianjin told reporters, though it’s not clear how serious their conditions are.
Chinese news outlets posted videos from the scene online, including eyewitness footage of debris falling from the sky after the plant was rocked by the blast.

A hotel has been attacked by gunmen in Somalia’s capital Mogadishu, with at least five people killed. Video posted on social media shows a large plume of smoke emerging from the scene that suffered the explosion.
Reports of the attack emerged on local media on Sunday. Several videos circulating online show dust and smoke emerging from the location, identified as Mogadishu’s Elite Hotel, while gunfire can be heard in the background.

The videos were filmed at a distance from the hotel, making it difficult to tell what exactly happened there.

Local media outlets reported that a powerful explosion went off at the hotel before it was stormed by gunmen. Some pinned the blame on Al-Shabaab – a hard-line Islamist militant group, that has ties to Al-Qaeda.
“There are deaths and injuries of civilians who were passing near the hotel and others who were inside the hotel. Among the dead is one director of the Information Ministry,” said the state-run SONNA news agency, citing Information Ministry Spokesman Ismail Mukhtar Omar.

Thick smoke clouded the skyline in the South Korean port of Ulsan after an explosion rocked an oil tanker, after which another vessel quickly caught fire as well. Nine people on board were injured.
A blast occurred on board the Cayman Islands-flagged oil tanker ‘Stolt Groenland’ at around 10:50am local time on Saturday when it was docked at the South Korean southeastern port city of Ulsan. The fire then quickly spread onto another tanker, the Singaporean-flagged ‘Bow Dalian,’ which was moored nearby.
Videos from the scene show both ships engulfed in flames, with large columns of thick black smoke billowing from them.

All 25 sailors from the ‘Stolt Groenland’ have been rescued. They are said to be foreigners, including some Russians and Filipinos. The ‘Bow Dalian’ crew of 21 was also rescued.
