President Donald Trump scolded Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell on Twitter early Wednesday morning for finally acknowledging that President-elect Joe Biden won the 2020 White House race.
The rebuke from the president came more than 14 hours after the Kentucky Republican delivered a speech on the Senate floor Tuesday in the aftermath of the Electoral College’s vote formalizing Biden’s victory.
“Our country has officially a president-elect and a vice president-elect,” McConnell said. “The Electoral College has spoken. So today, I want to congratulate President-elect Joe Biden.”
Trump shared a news report on McConnell’s remarks in a tweet posted shortly after midnight. In an accompanying message, he wrote: “Mitch, 75,000,000 VOTES, a record for a sitting President (by a lot). Too soon to give up. Republican Party must finally learn to fight. People are angry!”
McConnell further broke with Trump on Tuesday during a call with Republican senators, warning the lawmakers against objecting to the presidential election results when they are delivered to a joint session of Congress for certification early next year.
A spokesperson for McConnell declined to comment to POLITICO on Trump’s criticism.
In recent weeks, the president has trained his fire on Republican governors and other local officials he has deemed insufficiently supportive of his baseless claims of widespread voter fraud and scattershot legal bid to overturn the results of the election.
But his tweet Wednesday marked the first time Trump has so publicly turned on his party’s most senior Washington lawmaker for recognizing Biden as president-elect. McConnell had been reluctant to do so since the race had been officially called for Biden early last month, instead deferring to Trump’s ongoing effort to reverse the election’s outcome.
The Electoral College vote Monday was also an inflection point for many other Senate Republicans who until then refused to accept the reality that Trump had lost his campaign for a second term.
“I understand there are people who feel strongly about the outcome of this election,” Senate Majority Whip John Thune (R-S.D.), McConnell’s top deputy, told POLITICO. “But in the end, at some point you have to face the music. And I think that once the Electoral College settles the issue today, it’s time for everybody to move on.”

Former White House national security adviser John Bolton on Sunday blasted President Donald Trump for continuing to contest the Nov. 3 election results, accusing his former boss of mounting political damage.
“I think Trump is throwing rocks through windows,” Bolton said on CNN’s “State of the Union.” “I think he’s the political equivalent of a street rioter.”
Breaking tradition, Trump has refused to concede to his Democratic rival, Joe Biden, and launched numerous legal challenges to the election results.
At this point, Trump has “given up on the legal issues,” Bolton said, pointing out that Trump’s campaign has lost almost all of the legal challenges it has brought around the country.
“I think what he’s trying to do now is sow enough confusion that he can break through what’s called the ‘safe harbor’ provision in the Electoral College process,” Bolton said. “I think he’s playing for as much time as he can, hoping that something will happen.”
“This is not a legal exercise anymore,” Bolton said. “As we saw on Friday, when the Michigan legislators were called to the Oval Office, this is now an exercise of raw political power.”
Still, it’s unlikely that electors could go against election results and vote for Trump over Biden. Many states have laws that punish or prevent electors from voting against the chosen candidate, and state parties tend to choose party loyalists as electors.
Appearing separately on CNN’s “State of the Union,” Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan, a Republican, said he was “embarrassed that more people in the party aren’t speaking up” against Trump’s actions to influence electors.
“I thought the pressuring of the legislators to try to somehow change the outcome with electors was completely outrageous,” Hogan said. “We were the most respected country with respect to elections. And now we’re beginning to look like we’re a banana republic.”
Hogan acknowledged that a fear of reprisal from Trump could be a factor in Republicans not speaking up against the president.
“We all know how vindictive the president can be, how powerful his Twitter account is, and how he can really pressure Republicans and go after them,” Hogan said. “Very few of us are willing to stand up.”
But the number of critics is growing, he added. “And I think the others are quietly talking and telling the president their advice about what he should do. He’s just not following any of the advice.”
Both Bolton and Hogan expressed confidence that Biden will be sworn in as president on Jan. 20.

White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany declined on Thursday to say when President Donald Trump might end his conspicuous pause of post-election public appearances, telling Fox News that Americans will “be hearing from him at the right moment.”
Apart from a brief visit on Wednesday to Arlington National Cemetery to commemorate Veterans Day, Trump has not appeared or spoken publicly since a White House news conference last Thursday, when he repeated his attacks on the country’s electoral system and his baseless claims of widespread voter fraud.
Trump’s silence continued through the weekend, after President-elect Joe Biden was declared the winner of the 2020 White House race — although photographers did capture images of the president golfing at his Virginia club.
Trump has kept up his presence on social media, however, tweeting more accusations of fraud and updates on his campaign’s various legal challenges to the election results in key swing states.
McEnany, speaking on Thursday in her capacity as an adviser to the Trump campaign, told “Fox & Friends” in an interview that the president is “letting this litigation play out, letting his lawyers take the lead on this while he stays hard at work for the American people on Covid and other matters.”
“But you will be hearing from the president,” McEnany added. “You hear from him on Twitter. You’ll be hearing from him at the right moment.”

President Donald Trump let loose in a pair of lengthy radio interviews Tuesday morning, weighing in on foreign affairs and cultural flashpoints while continuing to speak dismissively of the rampant coronavirus threat.
Much of the president’s remarks centered on the return of sports amid the pandemic, as he railed against athletes who refuse to stand during the national anthem and rallied for college football to resume in the fall.
“These football players are very young, strong people and — physically. I mean, they’re physically in extraordinary shape,” Trump told Fox Sports Radio’s Clay Travis in a more-than-20-minute conversation.
“So they’re not going to have a problem,” he said. “You’re not going to see people — you know, could there be? Could it happen? But I doubt it. You’re not going to see people dying.”
The president and several congressional Republicans have advocated this week for games to carry on as scheduled, even as The Detroit Free Press reported Monday that the Big Ten Conference was expected to cancel its fall college football season.
Although athletes and schools have expressed escalating coronavirus-related health concerns, Trump told conservative talk radio host Hugh Hewitt later Tuesday morning that “they should play football.” But in that half-hour interview, he stressed players should also “stand for our flag and respect our flag.”
“Basketball didn’t do that, and they’re down [the] tubes,” Trump said. “Their ratings are terrible. Like, terrible. People are angry about it.”
The popular American pastime of college football is just the latest facet of daily life now upended by the ongoing Covid-19 outbreak within the United States — a public health crisis that Trump said Tuesday had damaged his rapport with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
“I had a great relationship with President Xi. I like him,” Trump said. “But I don’t feel the same way now.”
Trump did not allude to a similar deterioration in his relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin, who announced earlier Tuesday that his government had become the first to officially register a coronavirus vaccine and declare it ready for use, despite international skepticism.
The president only argued that he had been significantly tougher on Moscow than his predecessor, Barack Obama, whose administration he accused of spying on him in a vast bureaucratic conspiracy that allegedly involved former Vice President Joe Biden.
Trump made several comments Tuesday critical of Biden, the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, referencing a recent U.S. intelligence assessment that concluded Russia is targeting Biden ahead of November’s election while China is hoping Trump will lose.
“They’ll own the United States if he wins,” Trump said of Beijing. “And with me, they were having the worst year in 67 years because I tariffed the hell out of them.”
The president also opined on the most anticipated political announcement of the week — Biden’s reveal of his running mate, who is expected to be named in the coming days.
“I think that I would be inclined to go a different route than what he’s done. You know, doing it the way he — first of all, he roped himself into, you know, a certain group of people, which is fine,” Trump said, referring to Biden’s pledge to select a female vice presidential nominee.
“He said that and, you know, some people would say that men are insulted by that, and some people would say it’s fine. I don’t know.”
