McConnell: ‘Why we went’ to Afghanistan has been lost

Amid the ongoing efforts to withdraw U.S. troops from Afghanistan, “why we went there in the first place” has been lost, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said Sunday morning.

“We went there to prevent the Taliban from having a regime that would allow terrorists to reconstitute themselves and hit us here at home. It’s been a total success,” McConnell told host Chris Wallace on “Fox News Sunday.”

“With the continued deployment of 2,500 people, we were in effect keeping a lid on, keeping terrorists from reconstituting and having a light footprint in the country. The policy was working.”

The United States invaded Afghanistan weeks after the Sept. 11 attacks in 2001, toppling the Taliban regime. American forces in 2001 were also in pursuit of Osama bin Laden, the architect of the 9/11 attacks, but he was able to escape to Pakistan; bin Laden was killed there by U.S. Navy SEALS in 2011.

McConnell called the decision to withdraw the U.S. from Afghanistan “one of the worst foreign policy decisions in American history,” adding that “we leave behind exactly what we went in to solve 20 years ago.”

McConnell’s comments echo the rhetoric of many of his fellow Republicans, who argue that President Joe Biden is making a huge mistake by pulling the Americans from the Middle East.

Earlier on Sunday, Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah) told CNN’s Jake Tapper that it’s important to “recognize we’re in the position we’re in right now is because of terrible decisions made by two administrations,” referencing both the Trump and Biden administrations.

Sen. Ben Sasse hit the Biden administration for depending on “happy talk” instead of harsh reality as its basis for Afghanistan policy.

“Joe Biden put our forces at risk by having no plan for how to evacuate. We are absolutely at risk, and we are at risk because the president has been so unbelievably weak,” Sasse (R-Neb.) said on ABC‘s “This Week with George Stephanopoulos.”

“Abandoning Bagram [Air] Base will be read about in military textbooks for decades as one of the stupidest military blunders ever,” he said.

Schumer and McConnell agree to organizing resolution for 50-50 Senate

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer announced Wednesday that he and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell have reached a deal on a power-sharing agreement for governing the upper chamber.

The final agreement on the so-called organizing resolution for the evenly-split Senate allows Democrats to take control of committees and comes after weeks of negotiation between the two leaders.

“I am happy to report this morning that the leadership of both parties have finalized the organizing resolution for the Senate,” Schumer said. “We will pass the resolution through the Senate today, which means that committees can promptly set up and get to work.”

The lack of an organizing resolution had created an unusual situation in the Senate, where Republicans still technically held committee gavels and were overseeing the confirmation process for President Joe Biden’s nominees, even though Democrats hold the majority. It also meant that new members of the Senate had not yet received their committee assignments. Schumer announced new committee assignments for Democrats on Tuesday.

McConnell initially asked that Senate Democrats commit to protecting the legislative filibuster as part of the agreement, which Schumer rejected. McConnell dropped that demand after Sens. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) and Kyrsten Sinema (D-Ariz.) publicly reiterated that they did not support eliminating the 60-vote threshold.

The new agreement is expected to resemble the 2001 power sharing agreement between former Senate leaders Trent Lott and Tom Daschle. That pact also took weeks to negotiate. But unlike this year, the 2001 accord was reached before then-newly elected President George W. Bush officially took office and there was no change in party control of the chamber.

Senate Democrats did not win the majority until the Jan. 5 Georgia runoff races, when Democrats Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock won both Senate seats. Vice President Kamala Harris is the tie-breaking vote for Democrats.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell on Tuesday said President Donald Trump “provoked” the rioters who stormed the Capitol earlier this month as Congress was certifying the presidential election results, his strongest condemnation yet of the outgoing president’s actions that led to the violent insurrection targeting lawmakers.

McConnell’s remarks come as the Senate is awaiting formal transmission of the House’s impeachment article passed last week, which charged Trump with “willful incitement of insurrection.” The Kentucky Republican, who will soon become the minority leader when Democrats take control of the chamber later this week, has not yet said whether he would vote to convict the president in the Senate’s upcoming trial, which will begin after President-elect Joe Biden is inaugurated and immediately once Pelosi sends the article across the Capitol.

“The mob was fed lies,” McConnell said on the Senate floor on the last full day of Trump’s presidency. “They were provoked by the president and other powerful people. And they tried to use fear and violence to stop a specific proceeding of the first branch of the federal government which they did not like. But we pressed on.”

The House impeached Trump last week in a bipartisan vote, with 10 Republicans joining all Democrats. After the House vote, McConnell signaled to his fellow Republicans that he is open to conviction, even as some GOP senators have questioned whether the Constitution allows the Senate to put a former president on trial.

Several Republicans have similarly critiqued the president’s rhetoric, in particular his speech the morning of the Jan. 6 riots in which he repeated his false claims of voter fraud and continued to insist, without evidence, that the election was “stolen” from him. Even many of the House Republicans who opposed impeaching Trump said his posture was “reckless,” and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy said the president bears responsibility for the attack on the Capitol.

McConnell has done little to help the president or defend him in the wake of the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol. Last year, McConnell vigorously defended the president ahead of his first impeachment trial and declared that there was “no chance” that Trump would be removed from office. This time around, he is keeping an open mind, raising the possibility that the Senate could reach the two-thirds threshold required to convict the president and force a vote to bar him from holding federal office in the future.

Conviction in the Senate would require the support of all 50 Democrats plus at least 17 Republicans.

Even before the mob stormed the Capitol, McConnell was vigorously opposed to the Trump-backed efforts to object to the Electoral College certifications from a handful of swing states where Biden won. Ultimately, eight GOP senators and more than 130 House members objected to a slate of electors — even after the Capitol was violently desecrated. The objections went nowhere, though, and the House and Senate certified Biden’s victory.

“We stood together and said an angry mob would not get veto power over the rule of law in our nation, not even for one night,” McConnell added on Tuesday. “We certified the people’s choice for their 46th president.”

McConnell initially defended Trump’s right to challenge the election results in individual states, deferring to the president’s long-shot lawsuits. But those legal challenges eventually crumbled in court, prompting Republicans to acknowledge that Biden would indeed be sworn in on Jan. 20.

Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), the incoming majority leader, insisted that despite Pelosi’s delay, the Senate will soon hold an impeachment trial. He said Trump should be barred from ever holding office again.

Schumer and other top Democrats have sought to focus the opening days of their Senate majority on staffing Biden’s Cabinet and passing additional Covid-19 relief measures alongside holding an impeachment trial, though that could prove to be difficult given the all-encompassing nature of the trial process.

Trump turns on McConnell for calling Biden president-elect

President Donald Trump scolded Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell on Twitter early Wednesday morning for finally acknowledging that President-elect Joe Biden won the 2020 White House race.

The rebuke from the president came more than 14 hours after the Kentucky Republican delivered a speech on the Senate floor Tuesday in the aftermath of the Electoral College’s vote formalizing Biden’s victory.

“Our country has officially a president-elect and a vice president-elect,” McConnell said. “The Electoral College has spoken. So today, I want to congratulate President-elect Joe Biden.”

Trump shared a news report on McConnell’s remarks in a tweet posted shortly after midnight. In an accompanying message, he wrote: “Mitch, 75,000,000 VOTES, a record for a sitting President (by a lot). Too soon to give up. Republican Party must finally learn to fight. People are angry!”

McConnell further broke with Trump on Tuesday during a call with Republican senators, warning the lawmakers against objecting to the presidential election results when they are delivered to a joint session of Congress for certification early next year.

A spokesperson for McConnell declined to comment to POLITICO on Trump’s criticism.

In recent weeks, the president has trained his fire on Republican governors and other local officials he has deemed insufficiently supportive of his baseless claims of widespread voter fraud and scattershot legal bid to overturn the results of the election.

But his tweet Wednesday marked the first time Trump has so publicly turned on his party’s most senior Washington lawmaker for recognizing Biden as president-elect. McConnell had been reluctant to do so since the race had been officially called for Biden early last month, instead deferring to Trump’s ongoing effort to reverse the election’s outcome.

The Electoral College vote Monday was also an inflection point for many other Senate Republicans who until then refused to accept the reality that Trump had lost his campaign for a second term.

“I understand there are people who feel strongly about the outcome of this election,” Senate Majority Whip John Thune (R-S.D.), McConnell’s top deputy, told POLITICO. “But in the end, at some point you have to face the music. And I think that once the Electoral College settles the issue today, it’s time for everybody to move on.”

McConnell told his caucus that objecting to the results would force Republicans to take a “terrible vote” because they would need to vote it down and appear against President Donald Trump. Senate Majority Whip John Thune (R-S.D.) and Sen. Roy Blunt (R-Mo.) also echoed McConnell’s remarks.

Sen. Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) said that no one objected on the call to McConnell encouraging members to accept the election results.

“There wasn’t any pushback to it,” she said. “There’s wasn’t anyone saying: oh wait a minute. That didn’t occur.”

McConnell’s warning comes one day after the Electoral College officially voted for Joe Biden as the president-elect. The Kentucky Republican acknowledged for the first time that Biden will be the next president in his floor remarks Tuesday.

Several House Republicans, led by hard-line conservative Rep. Mo Brooks (R-Ala.), are still planning to challenge the election results on January 6, the date Congress will officially certify them. If a Republican senator joins the long-shot effort, however, it will force both chambers to take a vote on the election. But they have yet to get official buy-in from any GOP senators, though Sens. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) and Rand Paul (R-Ky.) haven’t ruled it out.

Johnson, who is holding a Senate hearing Wednesday on election “irregularities,” recognized Biden as president-elect on Tuesday.

McConnell’s warning underscores how the last-ditch bid to overturn the election is putting the GOP in a bind. On the one hand, Republicans are facing pressure from Trump and his allies to support his attempt to remain in power. And party leaders want to keep the base energized ahead of a pair of critical Georgia runoff races on Jan. 5. that will determine control of the Senate.

But at the same time, McConnell — who is defending a tough Senate map in 2022 — needs to protect his members from taking a tough vote. If the Senate is forced to deliberate the election results, most GOP senators would be going on the record against a president who values fealty above all else. And it would be none other than Vice President Mike Pence presiding over the floor debate — a potentially awkward scenario as his boss continues to deny the reality of the election he lost.

McConnell on Tuesday’s call cited a 2005 objection from former Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.) after President George W. Bush’s reelection, which delayed the process by a few hours, according to several sources. The Kentucky Republican warned that he hoped no one, particularly in the class of 2022, thought that was a good idea.

Meanwhile, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy — a top Trump ally who has yet to recognize Biden as the president-elect — has dodged questions from reporters about whether he supports Brooks’ gambit. But McCarthy did say during a recent appearance on Fox Business Network that the courts are the proper venue to dispute election results.

“The president is right to go to the courts, have his legal challenges heard,” McCarthy added. “And he said he still has more opportunity to do that, so we’ll wade through and see what happens.”

On Friday, the Supreme Court rejected a longshot bid by Texas and other Republican-led states to overturn the election results. McCarthy had joined that effort.

Trump has yet to show any sign that he will concede. Instead, the president on Tuesday continued to reiterate false claims of voter fraud on Twitter.

The president is also publicly and privately leaning on his Hill allies to launch a last-ditch effort to reverse the election in Congress. He has praised Brooks on Twitter and retweeted a Breitbart news article Tuesday in which Brooks vows to continue fighting the Electoral College results in Congress.

Yet even if a GOP Senator gets on board, the effort is doomed to fail, given the makeup of the Democratic-led House and the increasing number of Senate Republicans who have recognized Biden as the president-elect. Still, it could become yet another Trump loyalty test in the GOP.
