AOC rallies Texas Democrats in voting effort on hour-long Zoom

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) praised and offered to reach out to any flagging Democratic Texas state lawmakers during an hour-long Zoom meeting Monday afternoon, two lawmakers who participated told Axios.

Why it matters: The Texans have been holed up in Washington for weeks to prevent Republicans back home from gaining the minimum number of lawmakers needed to pass legislation. The stalling tactic has helped keep voting rights in the national spotlight, Ocasio-Cortez told them.

• AOC told a couple dozen state lawmakers on the call that if they gave her names and numbers, she would personally call their colleagues to urge them to continue preventing a quorum back in Austin.
• Over the weekend, a district judge signed a temporary restraining order blocking their arrests should they return home. Some Democrats have since returned to Texas, which has frustrated others remaining in Washington, the Texas Tribune reported.
• Ocasio-Cortez also said she would ask Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) about bringing federal voting rights bills to the floor for a vote, Texas state Rep. Ronald Reynolds told Axios.

What they’re saying: “She encouraged us to continue to break quorum,” Reynolds said. “She was very supportive in terms of giving ideas on strategy and in terms of how we can keep those who have grown a little weary.”

• “It’s a marathon, it’s not a sprint,” Texas state Rep. Penny Morales Shaw told Axios. “But when we hear, for example, from AOC today — it’s an infusion. It’s an infusion of hope.”
• A spokesperson for Ocasio-Cortez did not respond to a request for comment.

The big picture: AOC has remained a powerful figure on the Hill since staging an upset primary win in 2018, and both state lawmakers expressed hope their meeting would spark more attention to their cause.

• “If our members hear from other stakeholders or other elected officials — especially congressional elected officials — how important this is, then that helps,” Morales Shaw said.
• Just last week, AOC joined her colleague Rep. Cori Bush (D-Mo.) in protesting on the Capitol steps over the expiration of an eviction moratorium put in place because of the pandemic. The Biden administration ultimately reinstated it.
• The Dallas Morning News first reported that Texas Democrats were hopeful for a meeting with AOC.

AOC’s Cuba tweet draws fiery response from Florida Dem

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on Thursday ran into opposition from a prominent Florida Democrat after she called for the U.S. to end its embargo on Cuba, underlining divisions within the party on how to respond to the communist country’s recent upheaval.

“We also must name the U.S contribution to Cuban suffering: our sixty-year-old embargo,” Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) tweeted. “I outright reject the Biden administration’s defense of the embargo. It is never acceptable for us to use cruelty as a point of leverage against every day people.”

Former Florida congresswoman Debbie Mucarsel-Powell publicly chastised the New York congresswoman’s position on Twitter, pointing to “failed policies of a communist regime that has violated human rights, imprisoned & killed dissidents.”

“This is a matter of national security. The US must act,” Mucarsel-Powell tweeted.

The starkly differing positions exemplify a split between progressive and moderate Democrats on the Cuban embargo. Ocasio-Cortez has risen to prominence in the House as part of a progressive coalition. Mucarsel-Powell, who has been advising House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Cuba policy, was ousted from her heavily Latino South Florida district in 2020, when Hispanic voters broke hard for Republicans as they pounded Democrats for being socialists. While Miami Democrats ran from the term, Ocasio-Cortez has aligned with Democratic socialists.

Cubans took to the streets in historic protests and demonstrations against the six-decade-old regime this past week, leading to hundreds of arrests.

President Joe Biden’s administration has been slow to react to the unrest despite urgent calls for action from both sides of the aisle.

Meanwhile, Florida Democrats see an opportunity for Biden to help bring democracy to Cuba and, as a result, attract the Hispanic voters who fled the party in the November election.

Biden on Thursday called Cuba a “failed state” in his sharpest recent comments on the island situated just 90 miles from Floridian shores.

Ocasio-Cortez backs Wiley in NYC mayor’s race

NEW YORK — Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez endorsed Maya Wiley for mayor Saturday — one of the most consequential individual nods in the race so far and one likely to further consolidate progressive support for Wiley as her rivals on the left face crises in their own campaigns.

“She has been dedicating her life to this,” Ocasio-Cortez said. “Maya Wiley is our number one choice. We have a field of candidates, and again, the stakes cannot be higher … I’m putting Maya number one.”

Ocasio-Cortez’s backing comes only a week before early voting starts and roughly two weeks before the June 22 primary. The nod comes as City Comptroller Scott Stringer faces a second woman accusing him of sexual misconduct and as Dianne Morales weathers a staff revolt inside her campaign.

Wiley has been battling for the progressive vote with Stringer and Morales, but struggled throughout the year to gain momentum. Stringer, a career politician, had a long cultivated base of support and Morales has run as an unapologetic leftist, vowing to slash the NYPD budget in half.

Saturday’s endorsement followed a rally outside City Hall that Ocasio-Cortez headlined for other city candidates, during which she decried the role of big money in city politics. Democratic frontrunners Eric Adams and Andrew Yang, who have run more conservative campaigns, both have super PACs boosting their bids, funded in part by wealthy donors including Jeff Yass, Daniel Loeb and Kenneth Griffin.

“There’s a ton of dark money in the New York City election, from the bottom to the top,” Ocasio-Cortez said. “In the mayoral election alone, super PACs have spent over $16 million.”

Wiley herself is expected to get a $1 million boost from an outside PAC funded in part by George Soros.

Jumaane Williams, who is expected to easily win another term as the city’s public advocate, is another important endorser but has yet to announce who he’s supporting for mayor.
