The Star Wars Expanded Universe and the Promise of Multitudes

wcabaqnadtz7sfc92tcx.png

As someone from a mixed-race background, I was used to never seeing myself in my favorite movies, including the Star Wars films. Because I rarely saw myself directly in the media I consumed, I learned to work with what was available. I imagined that there was a planet somewhere in this galaxy that was inhabited by…

Behold: A precious cat that looks just like Baby Yoda

Behold: A precious cat that looks just like Baby Yoda

For weeks the internet has been absolutely obsessed with The Mandalorian‘s adorable Baby Yoda and the ridiculously bizarre film Cats, which is why it brings us great pleasure to announce that there’s a cat in this world that looks just like Baby Yoda.

Yes, a precious rescue kitty named Joy with large green eyes, a sweet face, and Baby Yoda-like ears will let Star Wars and Cats fans enjoy the best of both worlds. It’s the cutest crossover since the Adam Driver cat.

On Dec. 15, a woman found Joy in Kannapolis, North Carolina, and contacted the Humane Society of Rowan County. Joy, who had a wound on her neck and an upper respiratory infection, was taken to a Humane Society veterinarian for treatment and will remain there while she recovers. Read more…

J.J. Abrams reveals what Finn wanted to tell Rey in 'The Rise of Skywalker'

Director .J.J. Abrams has has answered one of the questions left open after Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, which is what exactly Finn was trying to tell Rey when he thought they were going to die early on in the film.

I had the privilege of attending the Academy screening of #TheRiseOfSkywalker today and J.J. confirmed that what Finn wanted to tell Rey was that he’s force sensitive! pic.twitter.com/hxuDHhwL6N

In the scene in question, Finn calls out a strangled “Rey, I never told you but —” before being sucked into the planet’s surface, where he presumes he will be dead. Moments later, all our heroes emerge underground, unscathed, and Finn’s outburst has both Poe and Rey curious.  Read more…

Make your own Baby Yoda cookies with this brilliant baking hack

Make your own Baby Yoda cookies with this brilliant baking hack

Geologist Katy Atakturk was just trying to make marbled sugar cookies when she took out her angel cookie cutter and realized, in her own words, “conforming to the norm wasn’t going to cut it.”

It was then that Atakturk, a Star Wars fan (and Baby Yoda enthusiast by connection), came up with a smart, easy hack for making Baby Yoda cookies. For anyone looking to make their own, simply make angel cookies with your angel cookie cutter, and then, “Off with their heads!”

The angel decapitation should give you the perfect Baby Yoda shape.

R2-D2 popcorn maker

R2-D2-Popcorn-Maker-William-Sonoma.jpg?f

It’s a little corny but William-Sonoma’s R2-D2 Popcorn Maker will probably appeal to most fans of POP culture, even at its $100 price tag. Something fun: Its head doubles as a serving bowl.

Give snack time the intergalactic edge with this popcorn maker shaped like everyone’s favorite Star Wars™ droid. Simply plug him in, add corn kernels and watch as R2-D2 makes quick work of air-popping a healthy snack for movie night.

(I’m still nostalgic for the Joe Namath “Butter-Up Popper” we had in the seventies!)

Learn Jedi Secrets Over Dinner With Mark Hamill

hamill-1-650x366.jpg
Enter for a chance to join Mark Hamill for dinner and the ‘Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker’ premiere (via Omaze)

There is no length Disney won’t go to promote Star Wars, including making Mark Hamill watch his own cringe-inducing audition tape.

As part of a fundraising campaign, the actor enjoyed a personal viewing of the 40-something-year-old video.

“It wasn’t easy for me to watch this,” he tweeted on Tuesday. “But I suffered through it just for you.”

And for the USC McMorrow Neighborhood Academic Initiative (NAI)—an organization designed to help prepare underprivileged students for admission to college.

Fans can enter online for the chance to score two tickets to Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker premiere in Los Angeles and dinner with Luke Skywalker himself.

“The best part of all is that every donation benefits NAI,” Hamill said in the video. “So hurry up, go to omaze.com/mark, donate, and may the force be with you.”

Hamill earned his big break in George Lucas’s Star Wars franchise, for which he has reprised his Jedi role five times (including The Rise of Skywalker).

It wasn’t easy for me to watch this, (“WHO TALKS LIKE THIS?!”🥺) but I suffered through it just for you, because it IS a great charity. Love that #omaze kindly provided subtitles, so you don’t miss a single moronic comment. Will I be seeing YOU at dinner? #DiningWithMasterHamster https://t.co/B9cytx12lD

— Mark Hamill (@HamillHimself) November 5, 2019

A mere 25 when the film was released, the now-68-year-old looked back on his humble beginnings with laughter and sneers.

“I’m not sure I’m ready for this,” he said, before letting nostalgia wash over him like the wave of Yoda’s wrinkled hand.

He goes on to reveal that this audition was the first time he met Harrison Ford—”the personification of cool”—and that his own “Beatle-esque” haircut was the “biggest thing I contributed to the look of Luke Skywalker.”

In the five-minute video, Hamill confesses to all sorts of behind-the-scenes hijinks, from nitpicking about how to pronounce the name of a Wookie to Carrie Fisher’s “effortlessly feminist” Princess Leia, who made Han and Luke “look like chumps.”

“We just had so much fun, running around the Death Star, being trapped in the trash compactor,” he reminisced. “There wasn’t a day that we didn’t laugh, a lot.”

Now it’s your turn to relive four decades of robots droids, lightsabers, nerfherders, stormtroopers, and whatever else Mark Hamill can remember—all for a good cause.

Enter now for a chance to win.

Increase your odds of attending The Rise of Skywalker premiere by donating to Omaze’s other themed contests, featuring Adam Driver (Kylo Ren) and Daisy Ridley (Rey).

Oxford English Dictionary gets a major Star Wars update

The Force is strong with the Oxford English Dictionary. That’s thanks to an update to its list of words which feature four rather important Star Wars terms.

Those words include: Jedi, lightsabre, Padawan, and force (styled as such).

In the OED’s new words list, published in Oct. 2019, three “entirely new headword entries” were published. That means they’re completely new words that have never appeared in the dictionary before.

A new sense was added to the existing entry for the word “force” — which has existed in the dictionary for some time, given its many meanings.
