Jesus is a Flamengo fan? Iconic Christ the Redeemer statue lit up in Brazilian team’s colors ahead of Copa Libertadores final

Jesus is apparently a fan of Brazilian club Flamengo after donning the Rio team’s colors ahead of the Copa Libertadores final against Argentina’s River Plate.

Appearing in their first Copa final in 38 years, Flamengo face defending champions River Plate in a one-off match at Estadio Monumental in Lima, Peru, on Saturday night.

The Flamengo marketing team and shirt sponsors adidas made sure the whole of Rio de Janeiro was aware of the monumental nature of the occasion by illuminating the iconic Christ the Redeemer stature which overlooks the city in the famous red and black stripes of their club.

Nicknamed O Mengão, the Brazilian side will face a tough task in aiming to add to their solitary Copa title, claimed in 1981 in what was their last appearance in South America’s biggest club football showpiece.

River are aiming for back-to-back Copa crowns and their third in four years. This year’s final will be a one-off affair for the first time ever, and follows the tumultuous events of last season which saw the second-leg match between River and bitter Argentine rivals Boca Juniors moved to Madrid after violent clashes.

Trump backs Brazilian president as he rejects aid for fighting Amazon fires

190827-trump-bolsonaro-getty-773.jpg

President Donald Trump gave Brazil’s Jair Bolsonaro his full backing Tuesday as the region struggles to contain wildfires wreaking havoc in the Amazon rainforest and as Bolsonaro rejected a pot of international aid to fight the blazes.

“I have gotten to know President @jairbolsonaro well in our dealings with Brazil,” Trump said in a tweet. “He is working very hard on the Amazon fires and in all respects doing a great job for the people of Brazil – Not easy. He and his country have the full and complete support of the USA!”

Brazil on Tuesday said it would reject $20 million in aid money offered by G-7 nations after this weekend’s summit to battle the massive fires that have threatened one of the world’s greatest sources of biodiversity.

“The Amazon are the lungs of the planet, and the consequences are dire for the planet,” French President Emmanuel Macron said in announcing the aid fund earlier this week. The assistance was not intended solely for Brazil, but for the nearly dozen countries that make up the Amazon region in South America, including French Guinea. Canada and Britain pledged an additional $11 million and $12 million in aid, respectively, during the G-7 summit.

Bolsonaro’s decision to spurn the aid money from France and other economic giants comes amid a public spat with Macron that resulted Monday in the French president openly wishing Brazil would soon have a new leader. Bolsonaro insisted that Macron had called him a liar and insulted him by questioning his handling of the crisis, and said that once Macron retracted some of those comments, “then we can speak,” according to the Associated Press.

Critics have accused Bolsonaro, a right-wing populist dubbed the “Trump of the tropics,” of facilitating the fires and of taking a lax approach to preventing mass deforestation of the rainforest, while also being too slow to respond to the fires. Macron last week threatened to upend a major trade deal between the European Union and the South American Mercosur bloc over the issue, claiming Bolsonaro was not living up to environmental commitments that had been made under the deal.

Brazil’s Ambassador to France Luís Fernando Serra said on French TV Tuesday that his country is rejecting the aid because the decision was taken without involving his country and the “language is ambiguous.”

“We refuse because we see interference,” he said, calling the aid “help we didn’t ask for.”

Bolsonaro’s chief of staff went further, taking personal shots at Macron and suggesting that the aid may be better spent reforesting his own backyard. And he knocked the massive blaze earlier this year at Paris’ historic Notre Dame cathedral, noting that “Macron cannot even avoid a predictable fire in a church that is part of the world’s heritage, and he wants to give us lessons for our country?”

Brazil will let hunters shoot endangered jaguars, parrots and monkeys in rainforests under new law, warn conservation experts

Brazil will let hunters shoot endangered jaguars, parrots and monkeys in rainforests under new law, warn conservation expertsTrophy-hunters may be allowed to shoot jaguars and other endangered wildlife “for sport” in Brazil’s critically important rainforests, conservationists are warning.Parrots, otters and monkeys could also be killed or captured alive – even in nature reserves – in the country that is the world’s richest in biodiversity, according to opponents of the plan.A bill that would legalise hunting, breeding and selling animals could mean commercial hunting grounds being set up for the first time in more than half a century, critics say. They fear private hunters would be allowed to either shoot their targets dead or sell them to wildlife centres and zoos under the plan being considered by President Jair Bolsonaro’s government. It’s estimated at least 1,100 species in Brazil – home to the Amazon rainforests – are already threatened with extinction from deforestation, human expansion and poaching. And the country has lost more forest habitats than any other country since 2001 – 1.3 million hectares last year alone, research shows. The bill, which repeals a ban on professional hunting, went before Brazil’s parliament in 2016 but was archived in the face of anger by conservationists. However, under Mr Bolsonaro, who has loosened a raft of environmental protections since taking office this year, it has now been revived.“If approved, this project will bring a huge setback for Brazilian biodiversity. The slaughter of animals may even take place in protected areas,” warned Michel Santos of WWF-Brazil.The Rainforest Rescue non-profit group said: “Brazilian environmentalists have criticised the bill sharply, describing hunting as cruel, immoral and a medieval ritual.“Legalised hunting would only cater to hunters’ lust for killing and boost the trade in threatened species.“The bill also plays into the hands of the Brazilian arms industry and arms exporters, particularly those in the United States.”But Valdir Colatto, the MP who first drafted the proposal, hit back at critics, saying 30 per cent of profits from game reserves would go towards recovering and protecting wildlife. The bill sought to regulate an area that has no rules, he said, preventing smuggling, illegal slaughter, mistreatment and the extinction of wild and exotic animals. It bans hunting of endangered animals in reserves, Mr Colatto added.Slaughter would be authorised only for traditional communities that depend on hunting for survival and to control invasions of animals threatening human health and economic damage, he said. But scientists insist any hunting in Brazil would compromise the health of natural ecosystems and cultivated land – and ultimately affect our own quality of life, Rainforest Rescue said. “Wildlife is crucial for both natural ecosystems and crops: by dispersing seeds it helps regenerate forests, maintains an ecological equilibrium and helps keep pests and diseases under control.”Humane Society International/Brazil is also lobbying against the plan.If the bill is approved by the government’s environment commission, it will go to the senate and deputies of the national congress.

Germany to suspend Amazon aid to Brazil

Germany to suspend Amazon aid to BrazilGermany said Saturday it would suspend Brazilian aid aimed at helping protect the Amazon forest in light of data that showed deforestation had surged since President Jair Bolsonaro took office. “Brazilian government policies in the Amazon raise doubts about continued, sustained declines in the rate of deforestation,” Environment Minister Svenja Schulze told the television news show Tagesspiegel. It said a first step would be to block payment of 35 million euros ($40 million) for forest conservation and biodiversity programmes until the rate of decline attained encouraging levels once again.
