A new book blames chemicals for growing problems in human reproduction

1614177456356.jpg

A new book makes the case that sperm counts have been falling for decades — and a major reason is chemicals in the environment that disrupt the body’s hormonal system.

Why it matters: The ability to reproduce is fundamental to the viable future of any living thing. If certain chemicals are damaging our fertility over the long term, human beings could end up as an endangered species.

What’s happening: In 2017, Mt. Sinai Medical School epidemiologist Shanna Swan co-authored a sweeping meta-analysis that came to a startling conclusion: Total sperm count in the Western world had fallen 59% between 1973 and 2011.

  • Together with falling testosterone levels and growing rates of testicular cancer and erectile dysfunction, that translated into a 1% increase per year of adverse reproductive changes for men, according to Swan.

Driving the news: Now Swan has written up her conclusions in a new book with a foreboding title: “Count Down: How Our Modern World Is Threatening Sperm Counts, Altering Male and Female Reproductive Development, and Imperiling the Future of the Human Race.”

  • “If you look at the curve on sperm count and project it forward — which is always risky — it reaches zero in 2045,” says Swan, meaning the median man would have essentially no viable sperm. “That’s a little concerning, to say the least.”

By the numbers: The global fertility rate — the number of births per woman — has fallen from 5.06 in 1964 to 2.4 in 2018.

  • Today, about half the countries in the world — including the U.S. — have fertility rates below the population replacement level of 2.1 births.
  • By 2050, that proportion is projected to rise to two-thirds of nations.

Yes, but: There are numerous factors connected to falling fertility rates that appear largely unconnected to sperm counts.

Still, there’s a gap around the world between the number of children people say they want and the number they actually have, which indicates at least some of the decline in the fertility rate isn’t wholly voluntary.

The big picture: Swan and many of her colleagues point the finger at endocrine-disrupting chemicals in the environment, including phthalates and bisphenol-A, known as “everywhere chemicals” because of their ubiquity in things like plastics, pesticides, cosmetics and even ATM receipts.

  • “Chemicals in our environment and unhealthy lifestyle practices in our modern world are disrupting our hormonal balance, causing various degrees of reproductive havoc,” Swan writes.

The other side: As Swan herself notes, there are other factors at play impairing male and female fertility beyond environmental chemicals, including smoking tobacco and marijuana and rising levels of obesity.

  • The apparent rise in genital abnormalities could be traced in part back to better reporting, and even changes in sperm counts aren’t fully certain because there’s little in the way of uniform surveillance, especially outside the Western world.
  • Trade groups — and some scientists — have pushed back against studies that connect endocrine-disrupting chemicals to fertility problems.

Our thought bubble: A growing number of scientific institutions have raised the alarm about endocrine-disrupting chemicals, and Swan puts together a strong case that impaired fertility is real and its causes go beyond separate health problems or lifestyle choices.

  • Swan explicitly compares what she sees as a fertility crisis to climate change, another global threat that has been difficult to combat because its causes are also largely invisible and it unfolds over a long time scale.
  • Just as CO2 accumulating in the environment over decades adds momentum to climate change, the damage done to human reproduction may be accumulating, with each new generation starting life with increasingly degraded fertility.
  • She notes that human beings — despite our numbers — arguably already fit three of the five criteria for an endangered species: destruction of our environment, inadequate regulatory mechanisms, and man-made factors that affect our continued existence.

The bottom line: “The current state of reproductive affairs can’t continue much longer without threatening human survival,” Swan writes.

Behind Woodward’s September surprise: White House aides saw a train wreck coming, then jumped aboard

200909-trump-ap-773.jpg

He offered lengthy meetings in the Oval Office and made phone calls at night from the White House — delivering Bob Woodward an unprecedented nine hours of access across 18 interviews.

Aides spent months fretting about President Donald Trump opening up to the famous Watergate journalist, fearing the consequences all the way through Wednesday’s bombshell revelations.

Trump bulldozed through them all, believing he could charm the man who helped take down a president and chronicled half a dozen administrations over the past half-century.

Now, Trump’s impulse may cost him as the interview transcripts and recordings are released this week, just under just eight weeks from Election Day and as some Americans start receiving mail-in ballots. The revelations in “Rage” have sent the Trump White House scrambling, with aides blaming one another for the predictable fallout from injecting even more chaos into an already challenging reelection race.

“You don’t talk the president out of things,” one White House official said Wednesday, one of 10 current and former White House officials who described the circumstances leading up to the latest book.

The interviews revealed that Trump was not candid with the public about the dangers of Covid-19, with the president telling Woodward he was “playing it down” even though it was possibly five times “more deadly” than the flu. “I still like playing it down, because I don’t want to create a panic,” Trump said in one audio clip released Wednesday.

As the White House and Trump campaign sought to tell a different story this fall about their handling of coronavirus, the book’s release is renewing attention on the president’s early missteps in a crisis that continues to disrupt hundreds of millions of American lives. The book’s rollout will continue this weekend as Woodward sits for a “60 Minutes” interview ahead of its wide release on Sept. 15. CBS said Wednesday the segment will also feature audio recordings of the president’s interviews.

In 2018, White House aides shielded Trump from an interview for his book “Fury” because they didn’t want to give the author more ammunition than he already had. The book was withering — portraying the Trump administration suffering a “nervous breakdown” with anecdotes from current and former aides inside and outside the administration.

Trump learned about the book late in the process and called Woodward in frustration. “It’s really too bad, because nobody told me about it, and I would have loved to have spoken to you,” he said in audio released by The Washington Post at the time.

He made clear to aides that he would participate in the next book, convinced that he could charm and cajole a veteran Washington journalist into seeing his point of view.

At least two sit-downs with the president occurred in the Oval Office — and far more frequently, Trump would call Woodward directly at night with the White House call log as a record. (The log records the time and length of the president’s calls but not the content, one aide said.)

Trump also urged his senior staff members to grant Woodward access and time, allowing him to interview several top aides, including senior adviser Jared Kushner, national security adviser Robert O’Brien, deputy national security adviser Matthew Pottinger and former chief of staff Mick Mulvaney, among others. Often Trump would urge aides to call Woodward directly during the reporting process and kept asking West Wing aides when the book would come out.

Throughout the process, several top aides raised concerns among themselves about the access and where it would lead. And they worried about the president’s tendency to overshare his ideas in often blunt language. But aides also resigned themselves to the months-long process of Woodward interviews and calls, knowing the president was interested himself.

“Sometimes the president does a nontraditional thing, and you get a surprising result,” said one senior administration official. “But I don’t think any of us recommended doing it.”

On Wednesday, Trump called the book “another political hit job” — despite the recordings of the president’s own words. And he defended the way he downplayed the virus early on by saying that “you cannot show a sense of panic or you’re going to have bigger problems that you ever had before. Please.”

When asked why the president would sit down with Woodward for 18 interviews when his first book was so critical, White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany said it was because Trump was the “the most transparent president in history.”

McEnany spent most of a press briefing on Wednesday answering questions about the excerpts of the book, contradicting the president’s own words released in audio recordings. “The president never downplayed the virus. Once again, the president expressed calm,” she said in trying to explain the gap between the president’s public versus private comments on the virus.

Democrats pounced on the revelations, believing they demonstrated why Trump did not deserve reelection this fall. “It was a life and death betrayal of the American people,” former Vice President Joe Biden told reporters Wednesday ahead of an event in Warren, Mich. “He knew and purposely played it down. Worse, he lied to the American people.”

“The president’s own words spell out the devastating truth: Trump was fully aware of the catastrophic nature of the coronavirus but hid the facts and refused to take the threat seriously, leaving our entire country exposed and unprepared,” Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said.

In response to the book’s revelations, White House aides quickly started blame one another. Newer White House staffers tried to pin the decision to help Woodward on previous offices or particular aides, even though the president himself made the call to work with the author.

The interviews took place over a few iterations of the White House staff, including during the tenures of acting chief of staff Mick Mulvaney and current chief of staff Mark Meadows, with Woodward reporting through most of the summer. His first meeting with Trump occurred in early February at the White House.

As distressing as several White House aides found the excerpts, they spent part of the day just trying to track down a copy of the book. The White House struggled to respond to audio of the president’s interviews, as well as on-the-record quotes from Kushner — evidence that forced them to argue that, at best, some of the remarks deserved more context.

The access does not seem to have brightened Woodward’s view of the president. The author bluntly concludes his book with the assessment that “Trump is the wrong man for the job.”

Trump’s decision to cooperate was seen as partly based on his respect for the Watergate reporter as an institution, the officials said, a rite of passage ritual numerous other presidents have gone through. They compared it to his 1980s cultural mindset that put special value on Time magazine covers and The New York Times.

“Trump loves brands, and Woodward has been the gold standard for 50 years of investigative journalism around the presidency, so it’s the same reason why he likes the Gray Lady, he likes The New York Times. It’s the paper of record traditionally in his hometown, so even though both excoriate him, he’s attracted to them the way a low-IQ small moth would be to a flame,” said Anthony Scaramucci, who briefly served as White House communications director under Trump. “Trump is always convinced that if he talks to the person, he is going to elucidate and enlighten that person and get them to like him.”

Trump thought he could curry favor and shape the coverage similar to the way he did in New York City in the 1980s and ’90s with the tabloids, one Republican close to the White House said, but “it’s different when you control the nuclear codes and when you are the most powerful man in the world. The stakes are higher.”

Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham also helped to persuade Trump to participate in the book and told him that President George W. Bush once cooperated with a Woodward book and it turned out far better as a result, one White House aide said. Graham did not return a call for comment.

Bush’s longtime strategist Karl Rove remembered it differently, however. “Every president does a Bob Woodward book and gives him plenty of interviews and then later comes to regret it, and this is probably one of those instances,” he told Fox News on Wednesday.

The desire to speak to Woodward reminded some aides of Trump’s insistence that he could also sit down with special counsel Robert Mueller. In that case, Trump’s lawyers feared the president would say something untrue under oath, and they managed to negotiate supplying only written answers to Mueller’s questions.

Still, the level of access stunned many political communications professionals. Jennifer Palmieri, White House communications director under President Barack Obama, called it “bonkers” and “hubris.”

Before Palmieri’s tenure, the Obama administration gave what was then considered significant access to Woodward for his 2010 book on Afghanistan. That included a sit-down interview for just over an hour.

One White House aide tried to wave it off as yet another damning Trump book in an already crowded field, one that wouldn’t add much to what’s already known.

“Everyone has a book,” a second senior administration said with a shrug.

Daniel Lippman contributed to this report.

Trump hit with devastating barrage as Michael Cohen and Bob Woodward books near publish dates

1599399859578.jpg

Never before has a sitting president been hit by so many blistering books, so many times, in a one-month period.

Why it matters: President Trump’s niece and his former fixer paint a devastating portrait of a corrupt, racist, dishonest commander in chief, just two months before the election. Michael Schmidt, a top N.Y. Times investigative reporter, begins with a quote from King Lear in his new book reporting that Trump’s Russia ties have never been fully investigated.

What’s next: Bob Woodward, armed with a reported 17 interviews with Trump himself, will be out Sept. 15 with “Rage,” which Trump is already attacking.

The latest … Michael Cohen — the longtime fixer who used to instantly put reporters on the phone with Trump — writes in “Disloyal,” out Tuesday, that Trump admired Vladimir Putin because he “had the balls to take over an entire nation and run it like it was his personal company.”

  • “I will never get the Hispanic vote,” Cohen quotes Trump as saying, per AP, which obtained an early copy. “Like the blacks, they’re too stupid to vote for Trump. They’re not my people.”

The White House calls the book “fan fiction,” saying in a statement that Cohen “readily admits to lying routinely but expects people to believe him now so that he can make money from book sales.”

  • “It’s unfortunate that the media is exploiting this sad and desperate man to attack President Trump.”

Library discovers stash of beer and gum hidden behind books for 40 years

screenshot-33.jpg?fit=801%2C500&ssl=1

In the 1980s, someone stashed some beer and gum behind books at the Walla Walla Library in Washington State. The library is closed due to COVID-19 and undergoing renovations. From CNN:

During the demolition three weeks ago, five full cans of Hamm’s beer and an opened pack of Godzilla Heads gum was found in a disintegrated paper bag, Wells said. Facilities Maintenance Specialist, Luis Cuellar found the odd treasure when he removed a seven foot tall corner panel on some open top shelving believed to be original to the 1970s building.

I bet the owner will be disappointed when they return for a drink and chew.

This 1962 illustrated book imagined what space stations would look

CleanShot-2020-08-12-at-10.08.10.jpg?fit

One of my favorite websites is John Sisson’s Dreams of Space, which is singularly focused on vintage non-fiction children’s books and ephemera about space travel. Most of the stuff he posts is from the 1950s through the 1970s, a heyday for pie in the sky visions of humans breaking free of earth’s wicked gravity.

This month, John is posting about books that speculated on space stations of the future. One of the books is simply called Space Stations, and was written in 1962 by Erik Bergaust.  In his introduction, he writes, “This book is a roundup of all current plans for space stations. It is based on official information provided by the Space Agency and by industry. The illustrations do not depict science fiction ideas; all artwork in the book was submitted by the companies currently working on our various space projects. It is based on designs by their own engineers and scientists.”

Click here to see scans from the book.

Book caption for the above photo: “Back to Earth! Similar in design to the first space stations contemplated by the Space Agency, this illustration shows a 3-man crew returning from orbit. Soft landing by parachutes is accomplished after retro-rockets have been used to slow down the little space station from orbital speed.”

Erik Bergaust died in 1978 at the age of 52. According to this Washington Post obituary published in 1968, he was “author of more than 50 books on aviation, space sciences and nuclear energy, as well as the official biographer of Dr. Wernher von Braun.”

‘A seldom seen niece’: Trump fires back at Mary Trump over tell-all book

gettyimages-1227110978-1.jpg

President Donald Trump on Friday broke his silence on a tell-all book that dives into the president’s upbringing and family life, distancing himself from his author niece and calling her a “mess.”

“Mary Trump, a seldom seen niece who knows little about me, says untruthful things about my wonderful parents (who couldn’t stand her!) and me, and violated her NDA,” Trump wrote on Twitter. “She’s a mess! Many books have been written about me, some good, some bad. Both happily and sadly, there will be more to come!”

The book by Mary Trump, daughter of the president’s late older brother, Fred Trump, Jr., is an unflattering portrayal of a president the author alleges is a serial liar suffering from multiple psychological disorders as a result of a fraught relationship with his parents.

During an interview with MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow on Thursday, Mary Trump also said that she had heard the president and other members of their family use anti-Semitic language and a derogatory slur on Black people.

Mary Trump’s book is not the first damning account of the president, but its unique perspective from inside the family has propelled its popularity and intrigue. “Too Much and Never Enough: How My Family Created the World’s Most Dangerous Man” is currently No. 1 on Amazon’s bestseller list, selling more than 950,000 copies on its first day of release.

The Trump administration has denied the accounts in the book on the president’s behalf, with White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany characterizing it as a work of opportunistic fiction, asserting that the president maintained a healthy relationship with his parents.

“It’s a book of falsehoods, and that‘s about it,“ McEnany said last week. “It‘s ridiculous, absurd allegations that has absolutely no bearing in truth.“

The Trump family tried to sue to stop the book’s release, citing a family financial agreement from 2001 as grounds to halt Mary Trump and her publisher, Simon & Schuster, from publishing or discussing the book. But New York state courts ruled that the publishing house was free to release the book, which it did earlier this week, and that Mary Trump could discuss and publicize her work.

Trump also went after his former National Security Adviser John Bolton, who had written his own tell-all account of his time in the White House. Bolton’s highly anticipated book, released in June, alleged Trump committed numerous acts of presidential misconduct including offering favors to foreign heads of government and requesting Chinese help in his reelection.

The Trump administration tried to halt Bolton’s book, saying it revealed secrets pertaining to national security, but a federal judge allowed the book’s release.

In his tweets Friday, Trump called his former adviser “lowlife dummy John Bolton, a war mongering fool, violating the law” who wrote the book “to build badly needed credibility and make a few dollars.”

The president had previously attacked Bolton in the wake of his book, calling him “stupid” and a “guy with no heart.”
