Police say Melbourne anti-lockdown protest ‘most violent in nearly 20 years’

3675.jpg?width=1200&height=630&quality=8

Saturday’s rally was the first time police used non-lethal weapons during a lockdown protest, with at least nine officers ending up in hospital

An anti-lockdown protest held in Melbourne on Saturday was one of the most violent the city has seen in 20 years, Victoria’s top police officer says.

Chief commissioner Shane Patton said his officers had no choice but to use non-lethal weapons to defend themselves from an angry mob that came armed and appeared intent on attacking them.

Jacinda Ardern announces Australian travel bubble suspension as Covid outbreak worsens – video

4751.jpg?width=1200&height=630&quality=8

New Zealand will suspend its quarantine-free travel bubble with Australia for two months, as the country grapples with a number of serious outbreaks of Covid-19. Travel with the states of New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia had already been paused but will now expand to the entire country. At a press briefing on Friday, the prime minister, Jacinda Ardern, said because of the Delta variant there was ‘greater risk now … than when we opened the travel bubble’. While Ardern said she remained committed to the travel bubble, Ardern added ‘Covid has changed and so must we’

Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster denied legal recognition in Australia

In the mid-oughts, Boing Boing evangelized the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster (FSM), a fine example of a religion pretending to be a joke (or a joke pretending to be a religion). FSM believers, known as Pastafarians, have been mostly quiet in recent years, but they’ve been quite busy in the shadows. — Read the rest

Australian Paleontologists Discover Giant New Dinosaur and Name It Cooper

Cooper, the largest Austrlian dinosaur.Vlad Konstantinov and Scott Hocknull/Eromanga Natural History Museum

Finding dinosaur bones in the flat plaints of Australia is a difficult task. But paleontologists have just confirmed the existence of a previously unknown dinosaur called the Australotitan cooperensis. Nicknamed Cooper, it is the largest known species to have lived on the Australian continent.

Australotitan, which is Latin for “southern titan” (not “Australian titan”) is a sauropod spanning nearly 100 feet in legnth and 20 feet in height. It’s effectively the size of an indoor basketball court, and according to the Eromanga Natural History Museum, it weighs “the equivalent of 1,400 red kangaroos.”

Paleontologists discovered the titan near Cooper Creek, hence its species name “cooperensis.” It’s one of four sauropods known to have lived in Australia, though there’s no evidence that these species coexisted. Research suggests that Cooper and his relatives lived 92–96 million years ago, a time when Australia and Antarctica were connected.

But why did it take so long to verify that Cooper is a new dinosaur? Well, Cooper was excavated from what scientists call a “trample zone,” a muddy area that’s densely compressed by the weight of large animals (like elephants, rhinos, or giant dinosaurs). Cooper’s bones were encased in rock, which required removal for identification. Comparing Cooper’s bones to those of other dinosaurs was also a challenge, though it was a required step in verifying Cooper’s uniqueness.

Paleontologists could discover several new dinosaurs in the Australian plains as new technology helps to speed up excavation efforts. But digging in Australia is still a pain. Finding dinosaurs in other continents is a comparatively easy task, especially in places where large rock formations and mountains are eroded to help reveal ancient history.

Striking Australian Bee Spotted for First Time in a Century—but It Could Face New Threats

Not since 1923 have scientists gazed upon the Australian cloaked bee. That is, until recently when scientists located a few populations in the wild. But its rediscovery comes as a mixed blessing owing to its potentially threatened status.

Family in South Australia find live koala in their Christmas tree

780.jpg?width=1200&height=630&quality=85

When the McCormicks came home on Wednesday, the Christmas tree in their Adelaide house had acquired a new ornament

The McCormicks went for a silver, pink and blue theme on their Christmas tree. The old plastic leaves were worn but looked beautiful with baubles on each branch and twinkling lights.

But this year the family tree included one very unexpected ornament: a wild – and somewhat confused – juvenile koala.

Warning! Near-naked man! Aussie school on lockdown after crazed local in underwear attacks bus (VIDEO)

A primary school was put on lockdown after a half-naked man attacked a bus in Adelaide, South Australia on Thursday. He smashed a window, terrifying passengers, then threw road traffic signs at passing vehicles.

In footage taken from inside the bus and shared on social media, a man in his underwear is seen attempting to smash the driver’s window with a red road sign. Passengers can be heard shouting, “get down!” and “Oh God.” The incident took place outside the city’s Glenelg Primary School early on Thursday morning.

The man managed to shatter the driver’s window, leaving him covered in glass, local media reports. He tried to break other windows on the bus before attempting to attack a motorist. A witness told ABC Radio Adelaide that the man ran into traffic and started throwing speed-limit signs at vehicles. Members of the public managed to detain the man before the police arrived at the scene.

South Australian police confirmed that the local man was arrested and taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital. “The man is currently undergoing surgery in hospital after he received several cuts to his arms during the incident,” police said.

“He will remain in hospital under a seven-day mental health assessment and once cleared will then be interviewed by police over this morning’s incident, with charges of property damage and assault likely.” The driver and passengers were left ‘shaken’ after the attack, but no injuries were reported.

Mining company destroys sacred Aboriginal cave in Western Australia. They’re “sorry.”

screenshot-3.jpg?fit=801%2C492&ssl=1

Multinational mining operation Rio Tinto destroyed an Aboriginal cave north of Perth, Australia last week. Indigenous people lived in the cave as far back as 46,000 years ago. From Reuters/New York Times:

Explosives destroyed two ancient rock shelters, where artefacts discovered included 4,000-year-old plaited human hair with genetic links to the present day traditional owners, the Puutu Kunti Kurrama and Pinikura people.

The mining giant, which had been granted state government approval in 2013 to damage or destroy the site under a legal framework that is currently under review, apologised on Sunday.

“We pay our respects to the Puutu Kunti Kurrama and Pinikura people, and we are sorry for the distress we have caused,” Iron Ore chief executive Chris Salisbury said in a statement.[…]

“As a matter of urgency, we are reviewing the plans of all other sites in the Juukan Gorge area,” Salisbury said.
