Two people hunting for shells at a beach came across a surprising find when they spotted an “odd-looking rock” that turned out to be two Civil War cannonballs.
Aaron Lattin and his girlfriend, Alba Ospina, were exploring an area in Folly Beach, South Carolina, after Hurricane Dorian when they came across the old relics sticking out of the sand.
“I wanted to get a metal detector and especially after the hurricane and see if there’s anything, any history or artifacts that kind of washed up on the shore. At first we just though it was a rock,” Lattin told WLTX. “The more we got to looking we realized it was more than a rock.”
The couple reported the historic find to authorities, who confirmed that the objects were Civil War-era cannonballs unearthed by the hurricane. Fire, police, and local explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) teams came to the area to make sure the Civil War cannonballs weren’t still live.
Lattin and Ospina were excited about their historic find and commented on how lucky they were to find the Civil War cannonballs on the beach.
“It’s a historical treasure. It’s the history of here in Charleston [South Carolina],” Ospina explained. “Of course after we found it we wanted to tell the world.”
