Trump lashes out at Harry Reid after former leader’s CNN interview

President Donald Trump on Monday attacked former Sen. Harry Reid, writing that the former Democratic leader was trying to put “a good spin on his failed career” after Reid criticized the president in an interview that aired Monday morning.

“Former Senator Harry Reid (he got thrown out) is working hard to put a good spin on his failed career,” Trump tweeted. “He led through lies and deception, only to be replaced by another beauty, Cryin’ Chuck Schumer. Some things just never change!”

Reid, who has publicly called the president “amoral” on multiple occasions, said in an interview with CNN that there was “something wrong” with Trump. The Nevada Democrat was Senate majority leader from 2007-2015 and retired after the 2016 election. He was not “thrown out” of office, as the president claimed.

“Is there anything that I think that President Trump is doing right? I just have trouble accepting him as a person, and so frankly I don’t see anything he’s doing right,” Reid told CNN’s Dana Bash.

From his home state of Nevada, Reid said he missed the days of the George W. Bush presidency, a remarkable statement for Reid, a scathing critic of Bush during his time in office.

“In hindsight, I wish every day for a George Bush again,” Reid said. “I think that he and I had our differences, but no one ever questioned his patriotism. Our battles were strictly political battles.”

Reid, 79, also said in the interview that his pancreatic cancer is in remission. His family announced he was undergoing treatment for the disease last May.

After serving in the Senate for 30 years, 12 of them as the Democratic leader, Reid still plays a hand in politics, keeping in touch with a number of senators from his party and keeping up with the day-to-day business of Nevada. He has gone head-to-head with Trump before, including a time late last year when the president tweeted a video of Reid’s 1993 position on revoking birthright citizenship.
