Volcano spews ash two miles into the sky in Japan – video

A volcano blasted ash two miles into the sky after erupting on Japan’s southern island of Kyushu on Wednesday.

Officials warned of a risk of large falling rocks and lava flows within a radius of about half a mile around the mountain’s crater, but there were no immediate reports of casualties. 

Mount Aso erupted at about 11.43am local time (0343 BST), and the ash falls have been showering nearby towns in the prefecture of Kumamoto

Operators of Japan’s stricken Fukushima nuclear plant have unveiled plans to construct an undersea tunnel to release more than a million tonnes of treated water from the site into the ocean.

Plans for the 1km tunnel were announced on Wednesday after the Japanese government decided in April to release the accumulated water in two years’ time.

Ten days before the opening ceremony of the Tokyo Olympics, Kara Lawson, the coach of the United States women’s 3×3 basketball team, gave a press conference. The sport is new to the Olympics this year, and Lawson, a former WNBA player and coach at Duke University, told the dozen or so reporters participating online what she liked about it—the game is faster-paced, Lawson said, and more unpredictable than the five-on-five version. But during a global pandemic, Lawson added, the health of her players was her number one priority. “We’re obviously tested daily. I’m actually quarantined in my room right now,” Lawson said. “We’re masked all the time … a positive test at this juncture is hard for any team getting ready to go to Tokyo. We’re focused on doing our part, not just so we can have a good competition, but we definitely feel a responsibility to fellow human beings to be smart about eliminating transmission of the disease worldwide.”

Less than a week later, one of Lawson’s players—Katie Lou Samuelson, a power forward for the Seattle Storm—announced on Instagram that she had tested positive for COVID-19 and wouldn’t be able to go to Tokyo. Fast-paced, maybe, but not exactly unpredictable. As the 2020 Tokyo Games get underway, Samuelson is one of 91 people either in Tokyo for the Olympics or who were hoping to go who’ve tested positive for the disease, including US tennis player Coco Gauf, a Czech beach volleyball player, two South African soccer players, and so on.

New coronavirus variant spreads to North America, Japan and several EU countries

Cases of a new variant of COVID-19 first detected in England were confirmed by health officials in Canada, Japan and several more European Union countries Saturday.

Why it matters: While there’s no evidence the variant is more deadly than the original strain, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s announcement that it could be 70% more transmissible prompted dozens of countries to ban travel from the United Kingdom.

• The strain, called B.1.1.7, spurred a cases spike that saw tens of millions of people in England and Wales lock down over the holidays.
• Some officials worry it may have been spreading unnoticed worldwide, as few countries have the kind of sophisticated genomic surveillance that enabled British scientists to find the variant, per the New York Times.

What’s happening: The Public Health Agency of Canada confirmed the first two cases in North America of the new coronavirus strain Saturday evening, in the province of Ontario.

• The agency noted in a statement “these two cases did not travel outside of Canada.”

Officials in Japan said Saturday the country would close its border to all non-resident foreign nationals from midnight Monday through Jan. 31 after seven people tested positive for the variant, broadcaster NHK reports.

In Spain, Madrid’s regional government announced Saturday that four people had become infected with the B.1.1.7 strain, according to Al Jazeera.

Sweden’s Public Health Agency said Saturday the strain had been detected in a newly returned traveler from the U.K., Reuters notes.

France’s health ministry confirmed the first B.1.1.7 case in the country late Friday, per AFP.

For the record: Coronavirus vaccines are starting to be rolled out across North America, European Union countries and nations around the world.

• European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen tweeted Saturday, “Vaccination is the lasting way out of the pandemic.”
• There’s no evidence the B.1.1.7 strain can affect the effectiveness of these vaccinations.
