French transport infrastructure ground to a halt on Monday as drivers and conductors at state-run companies continued to strike against proposed pension reform, while truckers protested for better wages and working conditions.
As many as 200 people from a local transport trade union congregated outside a TCAR bus depot near the French city of Rouen in the early hours of Monday morning, erecting a burning barricade of shopping carts and setting dumpsters on fire.

The depot gates were blocked off, trapping several staff members inside the facility. The move was ostensibly aimed at ‘encouraging’ public transport workers to join anti-government protests in a more visible manner.

‘It makes a mockery of people!’ French protesters not ready to back down in the face of Macron’s controversial pension reform

The four major road transport unions (CFDT, FO, CFTC and CGC) called a professional strike on December 15 ahead of a national demonstration against the proposed pension reform on December 17.

French truckers also installed blockades at several locations nationwide, including Lyon and Vannes.
A cumulative total of 600km in traffic jams was reported around Paris as commuters were all forced to drive to work due to the transport strikes, according to road information site Sytadin.

Meanwhile, some 61 percent of drivers are on strike according to the SNCF, France’s national state-owned railway company, with Monday marking the 12th consecutive day of strikes against proposed pension reforms.
A third of France’s high-speed TGV routes will also face disruption and in Paris, just two of the capital’s metro lines will remain in operation.

In the face of such widespread public discontent over the pension reforms, and against a backdrop of ongoing Yellow Vest protests and other civil disobedience, the French government’s High Commissioner for Pensions Jean-Paul Delevoye resigned on Monday.

Residents in the sleepy French town of Armentieres got a major shock Wednesday evening when a large black panther was seen patrolling the suburbs, and this was no Marvel superhero.
Calls flooded in to local authorities at around 6:30pm Wednesday that the powerful animal was spotted prowling the city streets… er, roofs.
The big cat “sometimes stopped to watch the train pass” or watch nearby traffic pass by, according to local residents, who nonchalantly claimed the cat’s owner is away on vacation, though this has yet to be confirmed by authorities.

During its rooftop escapades, which lasted for over an hour, the roughly 30-kilo animal briefly gained access to an apartment through an open window.
The police acted quickly and established a security cordon while the fire department secured the animal inside its new apartment by blocking the window with a ladder from the street below, trapping the inquisitive feline inside before the brigade’s vet tranquillized it safely.

The animal was then placed in a cage before being handed over to the local humane society before it will eventually be rehomed in a zoo. That is, unless its owner comes to claim it.

France has calculated the death toll from the record heatwave which hit Europe this summer, with its health minister reporting that the abnormal weather caused 1,500 deaths in the country.
There were “18 days of extreme heat” in France this year and not everyone managed to live through them, Agnes Buzyn said in a radio interview.
The heat exceeded 40 Celsius (104 Fahrenheit) in June and July and saw temperature records rewritten in more than 50 cities across the country. In the southern commune of Gallargues-le-Montueux, thermometers measured a French national record of 46 Celsius (114.8 Fahrenheit).
“We’ve observed 1,500 additional deaths… in those months,” the minister said, adding that only around a half of the victims were elderly people, aged over 75, the rest being younger citizens.
Overall, the heat negatively affected the health of almost 20 million people in the country, according to Buzyn.

France Info radio station provided a more precise death toll of 1,435 people. 567 of them died during the first heatwave in late June – early July, with another 858 succumbing to the extreme weather in the final days of July.
The numbers might seem staggering, but they pale in comparison to previous heatwaves which hit France in summer 2003 and caused 15,000 additional deaths.
