When Will There Be a New Solar Superstorm?

780d8e37b7100774f09b0cbd5a86914f.png

Just shy of 162 years ago—on the morning of September 1st, 1859—a hobbyist astronomer named Richard Carrington peered through his telescope and noted, in the sky, “two patches of intensely bright and white light.” Beyond Carrington’s country estate, telegraphs were failing all over the world. In American cities that…

T-Mobile wishes to release droves of drones powered by 5G

T-Mobile has been developing drones since 2015, using them in their network for delivery services and infrastructure inspection. They have also been working with the Small UAV Coalition as well as being active in various FAA committees and programs concerning drone policy and technology.

T-Mobile now sees 5G as a way to expand the use cases of drones, such as for emergency response. The Un-Carrier wants to put miniature cell sites on drones to enable line-of-sight and non-light-of-sight connectivity as well as give the ability to fly in temporary cellular connectivity.

T-Mobile Launchpad

One company, Unmanned Life is developing autonomous drones to disinfect public places and deliver medical supplies. In the retail space, T-Mobile hopes to use drone delivery to expand contactless shopping.

The Un-Carrier sees their expanding 5G network and low latency as a way to engender drone development and drone services and transform many facets of our society. One of these facets is sports. They are working with the Drone Racing League to use 5G to power their racing drones as part of T-Mobile Ventures, giving the DRL direct access to T-Mobile’s network and engineering expertise, as well as infrastructure and investment.

You can read more about T-Mobile’s 5G goals here and how they are working with the Drone Racing League here.

The NSA’s $100 million call surveillance program was a big flop

The NSA's $100 million call surveillance program was a big flop

A new report shows the National Security Agency’s $100 million domestic phone surveillance program was mostly a waste.

According to the study by the Privacy and Civil Liberties Oversight Board (PCLOB), the NSA’s program resulted in only one “significant” investigation between 2015 and 2019. It led to two new leads, and 13 leads the FBI already had, according to the New York Times.

The PCLOB is an independent board with members appointed by the president and approved by the U.S. Senate. Created by the 9/11 Commission Act of 2007, the board’s main task is “to ensure that the federal government’s efforts to prevent terrorism are balanced with the need to protect privacy and civil liberties.”  Read more…

Data breach at U.S. agency in charge of securing Trump’s communication

The Defense Information Systems Agency, which calls itself a combat support agency of the Defense Department on its website, employs 8,000 military and civilian employees.

The DIA, which is responsible for secure White House communications, said Social Security numbers and other personal data its network held, was likely compromised, reports Reuters, citing a letter sent to compromised individuals.

U.S. agency responsible for Trump’s secure communication suffered data breach: letter https://t.co/NDqi9zJgYE

— Chris Bing (@Bing_Chris) February 20, 2020

From reporting by Chris Bing at Reuters:

The letter, dated Feb. 11, 2020, says that between May and July 2019, personal data may have been compromised “in a data breach” on a system hosted by the Defense Information Systems Agency.

The White House did not immediately answer a request for comment and the letter provided few further details. For example, it did not indicate what specific part of DISA’s network had been breached or identify which other individuals may have had their data compromised.

The agency says it “provides direct telecommunications and IT support to the president, vice president, their staff, and the U.S. Secret Service.”

T-Mobile CEO John Legere to step down

After more than seven years on the job, T-Mobile CEO John Legere is stepping down.

The enigmatic executive will give way to current company president and COO Mike Sievert when Legere’s contract expires at the end of April, T-Mobile announced Monday morning. Legere will remain a member of the company’s board, with whom he worked with for some time to put together a succession plan.

Legere is most identifiable as the face of T-Mobile’s “Un-carrier” initiative, a years-long marketing campaign designed to make the carrier look a little more consumer-friendly than its competitors. Since its debut in 2013, the program has been used to justify the elimination of surprise fees in bills, complimentary subscriptions to Netflix, and so on. Read more…
