President Donald Trump will get arrested if he shoots someone in the middle of Fifth Avenue — despite his lawyer’s claims to the contrary, Mayor Bill de Blasio and the NYPD said Thursday.
“If anybody shoots someone, they get arrested. I don’t care if they’re the president of the United States or anybody else,” de Blasio told reporters during an unrelated press conference in Manhattan. “If you shoot someone, you should get arrested, and we would arrest him.”
Trump’s attorney told a federal appeals court Wednesday that his immunity as president means he cannot be investigated or charged for any crime — even if he followed through on his campaign trail boast, “I could stand in the middle of Fifth Avenue and shoot somebody and wouldn’t lose any voters, okay?”
The claim came as the president’s lawyers were fighting a subpoena by the Manhattan district attorney for his tax returns.
“Nothing could be done, that’s your position?” asked Judge Denny Chin, regarding the lawyer’s assertion of blanket immunity.
“That is correct,” replied Trump lawyer William Consovoy.
But NYPD First Deputy Commissioner Ben Tucker said police would arrest Trump for a shooting, just like anybody else.
De Blasio ridiculed the Consovoy’s claims.
“Anyone who calls themselves a lawyer who would say that, should not be a lawyer — let’s start with that,” the mayor said. “If you shoot someone, that’s a crime and no one is above the law. He would be arrested, period.”
