President Donald Trump warned Thursday morning that U.S. financial markets “would crash” if congressional Democrats vote to impeach him at the conclusion of the official inquiry they announced earlier this week.
“If they actually did this the markets would crash. Do you think it was luck that got us to the best Stock Market and Economy in our history. It wasn’t!” Trump wrote on Twitter.
The president’s message included a Wednesday post by the Fox Business Network’s Maria Bartiromo, one of his favorite cable news personalities, who tweeted the headline: “Stocks hit session lows after Pelosi calls for impeachment inquiry.”
Trump attacked Democratic lawmakers’ probe again in a tweet 10 minutes later, describing it as “THE GREATEST SCAM IN THE HISTORY OF AMERICAN POLITICS!”
The president has routinely touted his claimed accomplishments in office amid various scandals related to his White House and during periods of heightened scrutiny by Congress.
Since House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) on Tuesday announced her support for beginning the process of impeachment, Trump has stuck to that same playbook — bragging about the strength of the economy under his watch and warning of the havoc such a probe could wreak on American markets.
“We have created the greatest economy in the history of our country, the greatest economy in the world,” Trump told reporters Wednesday at a hotel ahead of meetings on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
“We have the strongest country we’ve ever had, we have the best economy we’ve ever had, we have the best unemployment numbers we’ve ever had, we have the best employment numbers we’ve ever had,” Trump said during those remarks, a segment of which he tweeted.
The flurry of online activity from the president comes before scheduled testimony later Thursday morning from Joseph Maguire, the acting director of national intelligence before the House Intelligence Committee.
During his highly anticipated appearance, Maguire is expected to face questions regarding his initial refusal to turn over to Congress a whistleblower complaint believed to detail troubling statements Trump made to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
The White House on Wednesday released a summary of a July phone call between Trump and Zelensky, showing that the American president urged his foreign counterpart to work with his attorney general and personal attorney to investigate former Vice President Joe Biden and his son.
